Acoustics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Artificial omni-directional sound source in an anechoic acoustic chamber Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibration sound ultrasound and infrasound . A scientist who works in the field of acoustics is an acoustician while someone working in the field of acoustics technology may be called an acoustical or audio engineer . The application of acoustics can be seen in almost all aspects of modern society with the most obvious being the audio and noise control industries. Hearing is one of the most crucial means of survival in the animal world, and speech is one of the most distinctive characteristics of human development and culture. So it is no surprise that the science of acoustics spreads across so many facets of our society—music, medicine, architecture, industrial production, warfare and more. Art, craft, science and technology have provoked one another to advance the whole, as in many other fields of knowledge. Lindsay's 'Wheel of Acoustics' is a well accepted overview of the various fields in acoustics.

Acoustics 101
ACOUSTIC CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS DISCUSSED
In Acoustics 101 a few general materials, as well as specific Auralex products are discussed. You may or may not be familiar with all of them, so we will cover them here in detail to get that out of the way! Your local lumberyard or hardware store can probably guide you if you do not know exactly where to pick up the items discussed, just be careful not to let them steer you wrong with substitutions or deletions. What worked once to construct a tight, good-sounding recording studio will always work because sound never changes. Auralex has no interest in reinventing the wheel, which is exactly what we would be doing if we attempted to make claims that were counter to the proven construction techniques that are “out there.” The acoustic construction methods and materials outlined here have proven themselves to work many times over and should prove more than sufficient for your needs. Also, with few exceptions, do not add multiple layers of the materials specified; in this case more is not necessarily better due to diminishing returns. (For reasons we will cover, going from two layers of gypsum board to four is a good thing. Going from four layers to six or eight, however, might not be worth the added cost/trouble.)

Oxford Beecher acoustics is Musical Instrument Tuning Repairs service, also specialising in setting up techniques and tone development of individual player's string instruments.
http://beecheracoustics.com/
Beecher Acoustics specialises in all instruments of the violin family: violins, violas, cellos and double basses. Buying a violin, viola, cello or double bass from Beecher Acoustics will give you a wealth of expressive tone qualities, together with comfortable operational features, and steady year by year back-up from our specialist luthier in the details of set-up. The set-up of any violin, viola, cello or double bass you choose will be adjusted to your personal style of playing, and your musical taste in tone colouring and balance of sound between the four strings. For beginners, we will advise on a helpful setting to enable the player to establish a good basis for technical control and to start to make steady progress in choice of musical tone colourings. For professional players, their much-loved violin, viola, cello or double bass may well be able to be developed, if they so wish, to give a greater depth of tone, better balance in double stopping between the four strings, together with greater projection of tone for their public concert work. Many skilled players dream of achieving the "Italian sound", which is often a quality perceived to be beyond their financial reach. However, over the years, at Beecher Acoustics we have specifically researched and now specialise in enabling some of the instruments prepared in our workshops to produce the "Italian sound", and at a fraction of the price you would normally expect to pay.

Acoustics Program
Find out about the Applied Research Laboratories McKinney Fellowship in Acoustics, which includes a graduate research assistantship for up to three years.
Introduction
Acoustics at The University of Texas at Austin began prior to World War II. Immediately after the war, personnel from the Harvard Underwater Sound Laboratory , where sonar and other underwater acoustics technologies were developed during the war, relocated to UT and Pennsylvania State University . The facility at UT is in the Applied Research Laboratories (ARL) and is an internationally recognized center for underwater acoustics. In the 1960s, acoustics research in academic departments at UT gravitated from Physics Department to the Cockrell School of Engineering , where the engineering acoustics program started in and soon extended to Mechanical Engineering Today acoustics in the Cockrell School of Engineering is an interdisciplinary area of teaching and research. It includes basic acoustical wave theory, ultrasonics, underwater sound, transducers, nonlinear acoustics, noise and noise control, and environmental acoustics. The program remains concentrated in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, but several other departments - mainly

ACOUSTICS (Greek: akouein = to hear) Commonly, the study of SOUND and its behaviour in various media and environments, including the effects of ABSORPTION DIFFRACTION INTERFERENCE REFLECTION , and REFRACTION . See: SOUND PROPAGATION In the broader sense, acoustics is the physics of sound, treated in all of its aspects. Up until the early 20th century, 'sound' and 'acoustics' referred to elastic vibrations and waves in the audible human range, but today, there are large fields of acoustics dealing with vibrations and waves not associated directly or indirectly with the hearing process, and often with frequencies and intensities above and below the human audible limits. The term SONICS has recently come into use for those aspects of acoustics not directly associated with the hearing process. See: ULTRASONIC INFRASONIC Architectural acoustics refers to the study and design of sound transmission in enclosed spaces. The acoustics of a room are its qualities related to sound transmission and reception. Applied acoustics is generally termed acoustical engineering
