From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Space Shuttle Atlantis on a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft Aeronautics (from Greek āēr which means "air" and ναυτική nautikē which means "navigation, seamanship", i.e. "navigation of the air") is the science involved with the study, design, and manufacture of flight -capable machines, or the techniques of operating aircraft . While the term—literally meaning "sailing the air"—originally referred solely to the science of operating the aircraft, it has since been expanded to include technology, business and other aspects related to aircraft. One of the significant parts in aeronautics is a branch of physical science called aerodynamics , which deals with the motion of air and the way that it interacts with objects in motion, such as an aircraft. Aviation is a term sometimes used interchangeably with aeronautics, although "aeronautics" includes lighter-than-air craft such as airships , while "aviation" does not.

What is Aeronautics?
Definition
Aeronautics is the study of the science of flight . Aeronautics is the method of designing an airplane or other flying machine. There are four basic areas that aeronautical engineers must understand in order to be able to design planes. To design a plane, engineers must understand all of these elements.
Design Process
Aerodynamics is the study of how air flows around the airplane. By studying the way air flows around the plane the engineers can define the shape of the plane. The wings, the tail, and the main body or fuselage of the plane all affect the way the air will move around the plane. Propulsion is the study of how to design an engine that will provide the thrust that is needed for a plane to take off and fly through the air. The engine provides the power for the airplane. The study of propulsion is what leads the the engineers determine the right kind of engine and the right amount of power that a plane will need Materials and Structures is the study of what materials are to be used on the plane and in the engine and how those materials make the plane strong enough to fly effectively. The choice of materials that are used to make the fuselage wings, tail and engine will affect the strength and stability of the plane. Many airplane materials are now made out of composites, materials that are stronger than most metals and are lightweight.

Eagle Aeronautics, Inc., founded in 1994, provides high technology engineering problem-solving and support services for government and industry clients. Eagle specializes in conceptual design of aircraft and spacecraft, analysis of vehicle structures, vehicle performance, and environmental impact studies.
Eagle has experience in sensors, instrumentation and on-board data systems, including measuring flight loads on operational civil transport aircraft.
Eagle has internationally recognized experts in aerodynamics, structures and acoustic/noise control that have served on a variety of national and international committees including safety reviews and technology assessments. One associate recently served on the National Research Council's committee on Breakthrough Technology for Commercial Supersonic Transport. Eagle Supports NASA's
Aeronautics Programs
Eagle strongly supports the efforts of the NASA Aeronautics Support Team that is working hard to protect and grow the NASA's aeronautics research and development programs.
Eagle personnel have worked at NASA Langley Research Center for more than 30 years in the areas of aerodynamics research and development, vehicle acoustics/noise control, systems integration, CFD analysis, structures testing, and software development. We have fifty years of experience in aerodynamics of flight vehicles with speeds ranging from subsonic to planetary entry, and member of Shuttle first flight certification committee. We have examined and approved all aerodynamic and thermodynamic data to be "flight ready."

On October 1, 1958 the agency was dissolved, and its assets and personnel transferred to the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NACA was pronounced as individual letters, rather than as an acronym citation needed NACA research and development produced the NACA duct , a type of air intake used in modern automotive applications, the NACA cowling and several series of NACA airfoils which are still used in aircraft manufacturing.
