Aerospace Engineering
It took thousands of years before technology was sophisticated enough for the development of a successful powered aircraft. Yet less than a century later, aircraft fly much faster than the speed of sound, and spacecraft travel to other planets within the solar system, and beyond. We have come a long way since that windy day at Kitty Hawk. All of this might have taken place within a lifetime; however, we are on the threshold of even more exciting endeavors. They will include things like space colonization, space based solar power stations, and the capability to fly to any point on earth in a matter of only a couple of hours. Aerospace engineering is both the most specialized and the most diversified of fields. Aerospace professionals apply their knowledge to design better aircraft, send a spacecraft to Mars, or design a satellite to predict the weather. The same aerospace professionals may also apply their knowledge to study wind stress on new buildings; to eliminate energy waste in skyscrapers; to design automobiles, high-speed trains and ships; or to aid in artificial heart research. The future of aerospace engineering is as exciting and challenging as its history.
Program Overview
The educational objectives of the aerospace engineering program are (1) To provide students with a comprehensive education in aerospace engineering with coverage of all major sub-disciplines. All students will receive an appropriate background in mathematics, science, and engineering fundamentals, and further studies in aerodynamics, structures, flight mechanics, stability and control, propulsion and aerospace design. (2) To provide students with preparation for careers in aerospace engineering or related fields by emphasizing analysis and problem solving skills and fostering the following attributes: individual initiative, ability to work in teams, good communication skills, and ethical professional behavior. (3) To cultivate in our students an appreciation for lifelong learning including graduate study and career paths in research and development.

An open source
platform-independent,
flight dynamics model in C++ JSBSim is an open source flight dynamics model (FDM) that compiles and runs under many operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, Linux, IRIX, Cygwin (Unix on Windows), etc. The FDM is essentially the physics/math model that defines the movement of an aircraft, rocket, etc., under the forces and moments applied to it using the various control mechanisms and from the forces of nature. JSBSim has no native graphics. It can be run by itself as a standalone program, taking input from a script file and various vehicle configuration files. It can also be incorporated into a larger flight simulator implementation that includes a visual system. The most notable examples of the use of JSBSim are currently seen in the FlightGear (open source), Outerra BoozSimulator (open source), and OpenEaagles (open source) simulators. JSBSim is also used to drive the motion-base research simulators at the University of Naples, Italy

Introduction
The Flight Dynamics and Control toolbox provides Simulink models and Matlab tools for flight simulation, analysis of aircraft dynamics, and flight control system design. The toolbox is open source software that can be downloaded at no cost via this website. Its core module is a nonlinear aircraft model that has been implemented as a Simulink block-diagram. The model currently has been configured for the DeHavilland DHC-2 'Beaver' and can be adapted for other kinds of airplanes, thanks to its modular design. It can be accessed via the graphical user-interface of Simulink or directly from the Matlab workspace. Other modules are: a steady-state flight trimming utility, an aircraft model linearization tool, radio-navigation models, wind and turbulence models, several simple open- and closed-loop simulation models, and a complete implementation of a 'classical' autopilot system for the 'Beaver' aircraft that contains several nonlinear elements. The software is documented by means of a user-manual and extensive on-line help information. The manual also provides detailed theoretical information about airplane dynamics and flight simulation in general, which makes it suited as a stand-alone reference too.

Aerospace engineers develop innovations and technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and space exploration. They often use solid modeling software, robotics, and lasers and advanced optical techniques. While many aerospace engineers are employed in the aerospace industry, their skills are increasingly valuable in other fields. For example, in the motor vehicles manufacturing industry, aerospace engineers design vehicles that have lower air resistance and, thus, increased fuel efficiency.
The Field
The Curriculum
The Aerospace Engineering curriculum provides a thorough background in fluid dynamics, structures, propulsion, controls, flight dynamics and design. The curriculum provides flexibility with regard to all areas of potential aerospace practice by emphasizing applied science, design, and technology while providing a firm foundation in mathematics and physics.
With a strong science and mathematics based education, aerospace engineers have also found employment opportunities outside of the traditional aerospace industry. Many work in oceanography, biotechnology, weather prediction, energy conservation, and in the petro-chemical, nuclear or automotive industries. In addition, the aerospace design provides an excellent background for business, law or medicine. Of course, people with the ambition to become pilots, either military or commercial, find the aerospace degree very attractive.

Supersonic Wing !
This page explores quasi two-dimensional calculation of the supersonic flow over a wedge-shaped infinity-span wing
Introduction
Whenever a wedge-shaped wing moves faster than the speed of sound M shock waves , series of supersonic expansion waves , and streams intersection appears. With this Applet you can:
  • calculate and display the magical picture of supersonic flow over the wing find the exact values of flow thermo-gas-dynamic parameters in specific areas control wing geometry in "real-time" mode using a "point-and-click" interface calculate and display wave aerodynamic polar of your wing
History
In 1992, when I was working as an ordinary engineer at "Yakovlev" Aviation Company, my boss asked me to write the program that should estimate the supersonic performance of Yak-141 three-shock variable-geometry supersonic air inlet. It was not too complicated an assignment, and later I decided to implement this functionality in some kind of "real-time" software simulator. This simulator was designed for use by students at the Moscow Aviation Institute in addition to training me in the ways of the C++ Builder :-).
