Agriculture was the key development that led to the rise of human civilization , with the husbandry of domesticated animals and plants (i.e. crops ) creating food surpluses that enabled the development of more densely populated and stratified societies. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science . Agriculture is also observed in certain species of ant and termite. Agriculture encompasses a wide variety of specialties and techniques, including ways to expand the lands suitable for plant raising, by digging water-channels and other forms of irrigation. Cultivation of crops on arable land and the pastoral herding of livestock on rangeland remain at the foundation of agriculture. In the past century there has been increasing concern to identify and quantify various forms of agriculture. In the developed world the range usually extends between

Connectivity is Productivity
It has been shown, time and time again, that access to technology is essential in helping developing countries fight poverty. For example, mobile phones give a rural woman access to food price information so that she knows how much to charge for her wares that day at the market.  Thus, an ubiquitous piece of western technology can cheaply and effectively increase food security in the developing world.

Farmland the Size of Italy Lost Annually
Last week in Italy, I had the pleasure of attending a talk by Olivier De Schutter, UN special rapporteur on the right to food. It is with bitter irony that I read De Schutter’s report this morning that farmland the very size of Italy is lost every year due to degradation and industrialization. The UN expert reported that up to 30 million hectares of farmland are lost annually. 10 million hectares become unusable due to environmental degradation, while up to 19.5 million hectares disappear because of urbanization and industrialization. As pressures are small-scale farmers continue to mount, shrinking plots could be disastrous. De Schutter gave the example of farmers in India whose landholds have fallen from 2.6 hectares in 1960 to 1.4 in 2000.

17. Agriculture, Facts And History - Crystalinks
agriculture. The word agriculture is the English adaptation of Latin agricultura, from ager, a field and cultura, cultivation in the strict sense of tillage of the soil .

Agriculture
The word agriculture is the English adaptation of Latin agricultura, from ager, "a field" and cultura, "cultivation" in the strict sense of "tillage of the soil". Thus, a literal reading of the word yields "tillage of a field / of fields". Agriculture refers to the production of food and fiber and other goods through farming and forestry. Agriculture was a key development that led to the rise in civilization raising of domesticated animals. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science. The related practice of gardening is studied in horticulture. Agriculture encompasses a wide variety of specialties. Cultivation of crops on arable land and the pastoral herding of livestock on rangeland remain at the foundation of agriculture. In the past century a distinction has been made between sustainable agriculture and intensive farming. Modern agronomy, plant breeding, pesticides and fertilizers, and technological improvements have sharply increased yields from cultivation. Selective breeding and modern practices in animal husbandry such as intensive pig farming (and similar practices applied to the chicken) have similarly increased the output of meat. The more exotic varieties of agriculture include aquaculture and tree farming. The major agricultural products can be broadly grouped into foods, fibers, fuels, raw materials, pharmaceuticals and illegal drugs, and an assortment of ornamental or exotic products. In the 2000s, plants have been used to grow biofuels, biopharmaceuticals, bioplastics, and pharmaceuticals.
