Agriculture Summary
When the Cancun Ministerial Conference collapsed in September 2003, WTO members had made no progress in agriculture negotiations. Decisions on major issues such as export subsidies, trade access, and domestic support hang in the balance as trade delegates scramble to get negotiations back on track. The Chairman of the General Council has renewed negotiations through a series of General Council meetings in Geneva in which trade delegates will plan the timely conclusion of the Doha Round that was initially set for 2005. Cancun and Beyond Instead of bringing delegates closer to an agreement, they seemed more polarized than ever at the Ministerial Conference. Leading up the meeting, developing countries and agriculture exporting countries, such as the Cairns Group , demanded that developed nations move to liberalize their markets by phasing out export subsidies and massive domestic supports, both of which distort trade in agriculture products. The developed countries, specifically the US, EU, and Japan, are reluctant to remove these supports because of concerns for the social and environmental consequences of an open agriculture market. Particularly in the US and EU, the trade representatives also face pressure from strong agriculture lobbies who oppose the removal of the subsidies and supports that are the lifeline of the farming industry in those countries.

AGRICULTURE
Thailand Table of Contents Much of the impressive economic growth recorded by Thailand in the 1970s and the early 1980s was owed to the steady expansion of the agricultural sector. This sector provided adequate food for the rapidly growing population and produced substantial surpluses of some commodities for export. Agriculturecrops, livestock, forestry, and fisheries employed about three-quarters of the labor force, and it was estimated that some four-fifths of the total population was dependent on the sector for its livelihood. During the mid-1980s, agriculture accounted for an average of about 25 percent of GDP, and agricultural commodities accounted annually for over 60 percent of the value of all exports. The type of agriculture engaged inwhether cash crop, subsistence, or a combination thereofvaried from region to region and within regions. In the central plain, there were farmers whose sole activity was the raising of such cash crops as maize, sugarcane, vegetables, and fruit. In the rice bowl region of the central plain, farmers grew rice for sale as a main crop. Elsewhere, rice was raised basically for subsistence purposes, but many farmers also cultivated secondary crops for the market. In areas without developed access roads and services, such as parts of the upper Northeast, participation in the market economy was limited. Farmers in these areas practiced subsistence cultivation, selling only an occasional surplus locally.

Welcome and thank you for visiting the homepage of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Agriculture is at the heart of so many issues that impact our lives each day – from producing food and fiber and the fuel that supplies our vehicles to the conservation of our natural resources and the economic growth and jobs in rural areas. The responsibilities and goals of the Senate Agriculture Committee are as diverse as the needs of American agriculture. The policies developed by this committee will support efforts to move our country forward, help rural communities grow and succeed and help boost the rural economy to preserve opportunities for the next generation for states like Arkansas. Agriculture (a term which encompasses farming ) is the process of producing food, feed, fiber fuel , and other goods by the systematic raising of plants and animals . Agricultural products have been a main stay of the human diet for many thousands of years. The earliest known farming has been found to have derived from Southeast Asia almost 10,000 years ago. Prior to the development of plant cultivation, human beings were hunters and gatherers . The knowledge and skill of learning to care for the soil and growth of plants advanced the development of human society , allowing clans and tribes to stay in one location generation after generation. Because of agriculture, cities as well as trade relations between different regions and groups of people developed, further enabling the advancement of human societies and cultures . Agriculture has been an important aspect of economics throughout the centuries prior to and after the Industrial Revolution . Sustainable development of world food supplies impact the future of globalization and the long-term survival of the species , so care must be taken to ensure that agricultural methods remain in harmony with the environment.

The end.
Defunct agricultural practices known as conventional chemical farming are destroying the world. Much of the damage is done. Organic agriculture, or permaculture, is farming's only possible alternative food production, and industrial hemp production is an essential cash rotation crop that replenishes the soil and reverses erosion damage.

T ake this quick test: if your soil has worms, which aerate the soil while they fertilize it, your soil is healthy. If it doesn't, your soil is like most soil: dead. Poisoned, most likely.
Modern agriculture has given the once proud abbreviation agri a bad name. Chemical agricultural practices, using petroleum to supply essential plant nutrients, has become conventional farming, while organic farmers and organic farms that practice permaculture and alternative food production, are still considered outside the mainstream. Chemical agricultural parctices release nitrous oxide into the atmosphere and cause erosion, contributing to the geometric progression of global warming and climate change. This further damages our food supply.
