For other uses, see Algebra (disambiguation) Algebra is the branch of mathematics concerning the study of the rules of operations and relations , and the constructions and concepts arising from them, including terms polynomials equations and algebraic structures . Together with geometry analysis topology combinatorics , and number theory , algebra is one of the main branches of pure mathematics Elementary algebra is often part of the curriculum in secondary education and introduces the concept of variables representing numbers . Statements based on these variables are manipulated using the rules of operations that apply to numbers, such as addition . This can be done for a variety of reasons, including equation solving . Algebra is much broader than elementary algebra and studies what happens when different rules of operations are used and when operations are devised for things other than numbers. Addition and multiplication can be generalized and their precise definitions lead to structures such as groups rings and fields , studied in the area of mathematics called abstract algebra

Algebra
Elementary algebra is a fundamental and relatively basic form of algebra taught to students who are presumed to have little or no formal knowledge of mathematics beyond arithmetic. While in arithmetic only numbers and their arithmetical operations (such as +, −, ×, ÷) occur, in algebra one also uses symbols (such as x and y , or a and b ) to denote numbers. These are called variables. This is useful because:
  • It allows the generalization of arithmetical equations (and inequalities) to be stated as laws (such as a b b a for all a and b ), and thus is the first step to the systematic study of the properties of the real number system. It allows reference to numbers which are not known. In the context of a problem, a variable may represent a certain value of which is uncertain, but may be solved through the formulation and manipulation of equations. It allows the exploration of mathematical relationships between quantities (such as "if you sell

Maybe most of the people that do math and/or algebra don't enjoy animation but I've got to say it's a great way to learn. Also, trying to learn algebra can be boring for me if it looks just like a textbook, but I found that when the lessons are animated, I actually learn more! First published Tue May 29, 2007 Algebra is a branch of mathematics sibling to geometry, analysis (calculus), number theory, combinatorics, etc. Although algebra has its roots in numerical domains such as the reals and the complex numbers, in its full generality it differs from its siblings in serving no specific mathematical domain. Whereas geometry treats spatial entities, analysis continuous variation, number theory integer arithmetic, and combinatorics discrete structures, algebra is equally applicable to all these and other mathematical domains. Elementary algebra , in use for centuries and taught in secondary school, is the arithmetic of indefinite quantities or variables x y x y has no definite value, yet we can still say that it is always equal to y x , or to x y x y or y r r describes infinitely many possible computations, one for each possible valuation of its variables. A universally true law expresses infinitely many cases, for example the single equation x y y x summarizes the infinitely many facts 1+2 = 2+1, 3+7 = 7+3, etc. The equation 2

    Basic Algebraic Laws Commutative Law For Addition: a + b = b + a
    ex. 5 + 7 = 7 + 5 =12
    Commutative Law For Multiplication:
    a x b = b x a
    ex. 3 x 6 = 6 x 3 = 18
    Associative Law For Addition:
    (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
    ex. (4 + 6) + 5 = 4 + (6 + 5) = 15
    Associative Law For Multiplication:
    (a x b) x c = a x (b x c)
    ex. (2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4) = 24 Distributive Law: a x (b +c) = (a x b) + (a x c) ex. 3 x (2 + 5) = (3 x 2) + (3 x 5)=21 Even though the above laws apply to addition and multiplication, they do not apply to subtraction and division. For example: 7 - 5 = 2, which is not the same as 5 - 7 = -2.
    Some Basic Algebra Rules The additive inverse for a is (-a) for any constant.or variable. a + (-a) = ex. 5 + (-5)= The mulitplicative inverse for a is 1/a for any constant or variable. a x 1/a = 1 ex, 5 x 1/5 = 1 The identity element for addition is for any constant or variable. a + = a ex, 5 + = 5 The identity element for multiplication is 1 for any constant or variable. a x 1 = a ex, 5 x 1 = 5
