Reprinted with Permission In modern times mathematics has become an inseparable part of human culture, in which it plays a fundamental role. Throughout the centuries mathematics has been a crucial tool in the hands of mankind. It has allowed us to understand the fundamental principles of the universe, for example Newton's law of gravity, Einstein's equivalence of mass and energy, Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the laws of quantum mechanics for elementary particles, and even the Big Bang theory. The advances in interplanetary exploration and rapid development of computer technology wouldn't have been possible without mathematics. Scientists, in their struggle to improve our understanding, have untangled the principal problems of biology and unveiled the secrets of life. However, the times when it was sufficient for a biologist to know only elementary arithmetic and graphs of functions are long gone. Today, they need much more advanced mathematics like linear and multilinear algebras, mathematical analysis, the theory of differential and functional equations, statistics and discrete mathematics. Branches of biology like genetics or ecology are considered as parts of mathematics. Mathematics also opens new possibilities for medicine. Mathematical models are used to understand our bodies and to find optimal treatment for diseases.

Albert Einstein, The World as I See It, 1931
The debate between realism and anti-realism is, at least, a century old. Does Science describe the real world - or are its theories true only within a certain conceptual framework? Is science only instrumental or empirically adequate or is there more to it than that? The current - mythological - image of scientific enquiry is as follows: Without resorting to reality, one can, given infinite time and resources, produce all conceivable theories. One of these theories is bound to be the "truth". To decide among them, scientists conduct experiments and compare their results to predictions yielded by the theories. A theory is falsified when one or more of its predictions fails. No amount of positive results - i.e., outcomes that confirm the theory's predictions - can "prove right" a theory. Theories can only be proven false by that great arbiter, reality. Jose Ortega y Gasset said (in an unrelated exchange) that all ideas stem from pre-rational beliefs. William James concurred by saying that accepting a truth often requires an act of will which goes beyond facts and into the realm of feelings. Maybe so, but there is little doubt today that beliefs are somehow involved in the formation of many scientific ideas, if not of the very endeavor of Science. After all, Science is a human activity and humans always believe that things exist (=are true) or could be true.

87. The Scientific Method
A discussion of the scientific method and why it cannot be applied to evolution.
http://emporium.turnpike.net/C/cs/t_sci_me.htm
The Scientific Method
The benefits from science are dramatic and widespread. By using scientific principles, man has pulled back the curtain of ignorance and advanced the quality of life for millions of people. With these achievements, science justifiably deserves a good reputation. Taking a closer look, the essence of science is the scientific method where a hypothesis is tested by experiment. That is, 1) State the question
2) Form a hypothesis
3) Do experiments
4) Interpret data and draw conclusions
5) Revise theory (go back to step 2) Instead of endless philosophical discussions to prove a point, experiment becomes the final arbitrator of truth - a successful approach. The issue becomes a bit sticky when discussing origins. How do we test the theory of evolution? We don't have the luxury of having a miniature universe with eons of time in the corner of a laboratory. So this leaves both evolutionists and creationists in same the boat. No absolute way to objectivity test their assertions. No eyewitnesses... Both are left to propose a model and then compare it with nature for consistency. Notice too, that good theories are falsifiable. Now consider the theory of evolution ... How can it be proved false? What fraction of the theory of evolution is open to invalidation, some small detail, or the entire principle? The approach seems to be, "look, you're here and there is no intelligent designer so evolution must be true!". Is this science or something else?

88. Wonderings About Evolution
Discusses questions that will have to be answered before evolution theory can be accepted as fact.
http://emporium.turnpike.net/C/cs/quest.htm
Do You Believe that Evolution is True?
If so, then provide an answer to the following questions. "Evolution" in this context is the idea that natural, undirected processes are sufficient to account for the existence of all natural things. See this Conservapedia article for more information on the "theory of evolution" and what it teaches.
  • Something from nothing?
The "Big Bang", the most widely accepted theory of the beginning of the universe, states that everything developed from a small dense cloud of subatomic particles and radiation which exploded, forming hydrogen (and some helium) gas. Where did this energy/matter come from? How reasonable is it to assume it came into being from nothing? And even if it did come into being, what would cause it to explode? We know from common experience that explosions are destructive and lead to disorder . How reasonable is it to assume that a "big bang" explosion produced the opposite effect - increasing "information", order and the formation of useful structures, such as stars and planets, and eventually people?

    • A feminine theory of evolution with estrogen controlling the timing of events. A theory of autism that also explains the origin and evolution of normal human split consciousness (theory of mind). Art and play are elevated to become central to evolution. Biological evolution and social change are joined and reframed as part of an identical process. Teleology, a large scale social trend, is described as a social structure concept. The environment and social structure are elevated to become central to evolution and social transformation. Human migration patterns emerge as influential in cerebral development. Mating two humans with only very distant ancestors (50,000 year gaps) can create autism and/or forms of hybrid vigor. Evolution evolves. This site describes how the actual structures of evolution have transformed. Female infanticide is redefined as a powerful stabilizing force in patrifocal social structure.

So You Want to be an Anti-Darwinian
    Varieties of Opposition to Darwinism
    John Wilkins

    [Last Update: December 21, 1998]
Summary any different people oppose some or all aspects of Darwin's thinking, or the views that have arisen since and go by the term "Darwinism". This essay distinguishes and names the major varieties of anti-Darwinism. It does not attempt to defend or reject any views, just to provide a map to the conceptual territory.
Caution to the Reader Every one of these viewpoints, although it has a name and often a number of defenders, is only a notional position, and is not held by anyone as bluntly as stated here. People can and do hold a variety of these positions and see no conflict with each other or Darwinism. Just because someone flies a banner doesn't mean there's an army underneath it or a war to fight. The world of science is not a formal logical system, and schools of thought do not resolve most of the time into exclusive camps. Or to put it another way, borders on maps are often arbitrary.
Introduction If you wish to disagree with Darwin, it is important to know what aspect of Darwin's thinking, and more importantly of modern evolutionary theory, you are disputing. Many opponents of Darwinism seem to think that because one disagrees with, say, the role of natural selection in evolution, that one automatically disagrees with the idea of evolution itself. Creationists especially seem to slide from "disagrees with some aspect of synthetic Darwinism" to "rejects evolution". One of the more dishonest versions of this tactic lies in the use of comments made in one context (for example, Colin Patterson's talk on the relevance of cladistic methods to reconstruct evolutionary trees in the Symposia on Systematics at the American Museum of Natural History) in an entirely different context (the supposed rejection by Patterson of Darwinism in total, despite his having written a book on evolution accepting Darwinian theory [

Revision 5, 2005-09-25 Comments on The Privileged Planet added. Link to Mechanism page added.

This page originally contained an article called "Why I Disbelieve Evolution". That article, and its related sub-articles, have stagnated, and no longer accurately reflect my current position. (If you want to read those articles, they are archived here .) I am now leaning towards the idea of design by an engineering team; i.e. multiple designers.
Phillip Johnson's book Darwin On Trial has spawned a movement which is now called Intelligent Design , or ID for short. What follows is a summary of ID (as I interpret it), and a short list of recommended reading for those who are just discovering it.
    ID asserts that:
The mutation-selection mechanism of Darwinian evolution does not have the creative powers attributed to it, and natural selection serves only as a maintainer of genetic code. Life on earth was designed by intelligent beings. Speciation is not a natural phenomenon, except perhaps when it involves complexity-neutral or complexity-reducing changes.

Alfred Wallace thought outside the box. He was the co-discoverer, with Charles Darwin, of the theory of natural selection. Between them, of course, they ended up creating another box. A few years later Wallace thought outside that box, too. Natural selection, he argued, couldn't fully account for human nature, there must be some other mechanism. To escape the box he and Darwin had created he ventured as far afield as spiritualism. In the following books I take up Wallace's quest. I offer them as a treat for people who, like Wallace, relish out-of-the-box thinking. The newest title begins by asking, what kind of theory would it take to account for human nature as we know it? The answer is a new "self-centered" approach to evolution that lays out a new road to self improvement. VIDEO: NEW HUMANISM, NEW SELF, FROM LAMARCKISM
