Clear skies to all !! Thanks for visiting my site !! Updated October 25, 2010 The Astronomy Webcam Paradise I have participated to the beginning of the webcam adventure in astronomy. You will find here old and recent images and how to modify your own webcam. Some of my main interests are planetary imaging, 3D stereoscopic vision and near infrared photography. Buying an H-alpha filter for the Venus transit made me a passionate observer of our Star. After the moded Canon 300D (now reserved for near IR photography), I have now a partially defiltered Canon EOS 40D and I can say that liveview changes my life ! Otherwise Registax5, Astrosnap and Deepskystacker are some of my best friend programs :) Sylvain Weiller Recent updates , look for this sign : the bigger the most recent and/or important !

Amateur astronomy is one of those hobbies in which I participated avidly for the four years in the U.S. Air Force and for a couple years after separating. During that time I observed as often as time and atmospheric conditions permitted. While at Robins AFB, in Warner Robins, Georgia, I belonged to the Macon Amateur Astronomy club and spent quite a few Friday evenings operating the museum's/club's 8", 10" and 14" Celestron telescopes both for private observation and for assisting the public after the planetarium show. The club took a couple trips to the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta and got to look through their 32" reflector, which at the time (circa 1980) was the largest reflecting telescope in the southeast. Today, of course, private 30" Dobsonians are as affordable as motorcycles. A picture of me and my 8" Newtonian reflector is given below. I ended up selling it after getting married to help pay the mortgage (sold all the R/C stuff, too). Only naked-eye (no longer anywhere near my former 20/15 vision) and my trusty binoculars remain for observing over the past 20 years. Recently, have I begun reacquiring some of my "toys" from yesteryear. I have not purchased another telescope yet, but the good thing is that now the state of the art is orders of magnitude better than where I left off.
Comet Holmes (click image)
This photo was made with my Canon S1 2S Power Shot, mounted on a tripod. 15-second exposure. 11/6/2007, 11:00 pm est. Through my 8x45 binoculars, comet Holmes appears as a very prominent smudge. It is easily seen with the naked eye as what looks like an extra star in Perseus.

Current Moon Phase
Clear Sky Clock - Tucson I am a deep sky fanatic (a geek, as those who know me often say), especially galaxies and nebulae, but I also like to look at the planets and the Moon. I haven't really been too interested in comets, variable stars, etc. but try to keep an open mind as I may travel that path in the future. I've logged all of Messier's 110 (109), many from midtown Tucson, AZ using a 6" reflector and have completed a Messier Marathon using a 20" Obsession reflector. I had originally planned to capture images of all of the Messier objects using the 20" and an SBIG ST-237 CCD camera, but I never got around to that - mainly because I had a hard time not using the 20" for visual observing. Now, I no longer have the 20" Obsession, having sold it in order to purchase a 25" Obsession. I received the 25" primary from Galaxy Optics on January 7, 2003 and received the 25" Obsession telescope on January 8, 2003. I've tried to go out viewing with the new scope every new moon since. If I have but one word to describe the 25" Obsession: Awesome.

Amateur Astronomy
What is amateur astronomy? It's looking up and enjoying the beauty of the night sky. It's making sketches of the craters of the moon. It's learning how to pronounce the names of stars and constellations. It's observing one object night after night to see miniscule changes. There are many aspects that make up amateur astronomy. We've tried to include some material that local amateurs and those wanting to get into astronomy might find useful in this section. Watch for announcements and updates of programs as well as interesting things that might be happening in the sky.

Welcome to my Amateur Astronomy Page. My name is Paul and I'm a keen amateur astronomer now living near Andover in Hampshire, UK, about miles west of London , although many of my images were taken when I was living on the outskirts of London.
This page shows that it is possible to carry out astrophotography, even when living in light polluted suburbs, if a modern CCD camera is used. My main interest is deep sky photography and many of the pictures on this site are examples of galaxies and nebulae. I also enjoy photographing the moon and planets so I have included some planetary and lunar photographs as well.

Web HobbySpace Astronomy The mysteries above Astronomy is obviously the oldest and most popular of space hobbies. Even the occasional backyard skywatching by unaided eye or a small telescope can be a marvelous experience. There are innumerable web sites already devoted to general astronomy and so we start below with just a guide to some introductory sites and a few of the major astronomy link lists. We will focus here more on sites related to astronomy projects where amateurs can make significant contributions. One of the most wonderful aspects of astronomy is that amateurs still make significant contributions.

About Astrosoc
The site is very new and as such there is likely to be some errors in the content. If you spot any, I would be most grateful if you could drop me an email to point them out. AstroSoc - the University of St Andrews Astronomical Society - is a wide and varied collection of individuals united in the common interest of astronomy. Although primarily aimed at existing students, AstroSoc membership is open to all. Founded back in the mists of time, around 1972, AstroSoc has around 100 members and is under the management of the supreme wisdom that is the committee. Our main events are:

What's new
I have been interested in astronomy and astrophysics since my middle school days, but I wasn't observing anything until relatively recently, i.e. 2002. Observing supplements my "theoretical" interest in astronomy - it would not be so much interesting if I didn't know some about the things I see, and on the other hand seeing adds a "personal touch" to knowledge. As by profession I am a theoretician (computational biology at present), and I read about astronomy (and observing) more than I do observe (or image). You may want to check my book resources page to see interesting books I have read (no, I am not associated with Amazon in any way other than being a good long time customer). My practical amateur astronomy journey started in the summer of 2002 with a small 4.5" Dobsonian from Orion (SkyQuest 4.5), but morphed fast into a serious enterprise. After approximately a year I added Celestron C9.25-SGT, then 80mm piggyback refractor (C80ED) and I was quite happy until I got aperture fever again ... My thoughts slowly focused on the biggest of the Celestron SCTs - the famous 14". That urge to have bigger and bigger and bigger telescope! I bet you know it very well . I had to buy 14" SCT, and so I did, and I am very happy with it. CGE1400 is a great scope, wonderful optics, excellent mount! It performs very well for visual, with good pointing accuracy. Many say that C14+C80ED would be too heavy for CGE mount for astrophotography, but for me it works very well in this aspect too (see "
