HOME ABOUT EQUIPMENT TIPS ... CONTACT News Headlines from SPACE.com Hi there! My name is Brown... Gary Brown Amateur Astronomer and Sky Observer Extraordinaire (aka: "Mosquito Bait"). :) I live in West Chicago, Illinois (33 miles West of downtown, light polluted Chicago) where I participate in the exciting hobby of Amateur Astronomy. I've always possesed an EXTREME "thirst" for knowledge in the physical sciences (thanks to my loving parents and grade-school science teacher). So, it's no wonder that, as an adult, I've chosen hobbies and careers in: aviation, airplanes/rocketry, photography, ham radio, electronics, computers, science-fiction and so much more. Thus, it was probably by fate that I stumbled across the South West Astronomy Observers Group in January 2002. Since then, I have started spending much of my time and "squandering" the family "fortune" (?) on my latest hobby and passion... Amateur Astronomy.

Amateur Astronomy is the most popular science , for many reasons:
  • All the original material of the science is available to anyone who cares to look, unlike almost every other scientific discipline A brand new astronomer and an old pro still know approximately the same amount about the Universe : Zero. It sounds discouraging, but it really isn't. Even someone brand new to Astronomy can make valuable contributions to scientific investigation , just like the old pro Astronomy is an observation al science, unlike almost every other science. You look at things, instead of conducting experiment s, so the method s aren't as easy to corrupt as most other sciences. If you try to fake a conclusion , anyone can look at what you looked at, and find you out It provides a deep and satisfying connection to our own history . The movement of the heaven s have concerned almost every group of ancient humans at least since the invention of agriculture. The star names, constellation names, and the stories about them are thousands of years old. Many of our ancient myth s were created to explain the shapes in the sky! GADGETEER
    r
    n.
A person who designs, builds, or delights in the use of gadgets.
That's a dictionary definition. But I think there is more to it than that. I first came across the term in Richard Preston's wonderful book "First Light The Search for the Edge of the Universe." Preston described the work of the Palomar Mountain Gadgeteers, an intrepid group of scientists and technicians who dive into dumpsters, scrounge parts, and build amazing instruments that they use to explore the universe.
Most of us are not fortunate enough to gadgeteer for a living, and our gadgets are not likely to expand the horizons of the known universe, but nevertheless, the term "gadgeteer" seems to capture the spirit of adventure and innovation of some electronic hobbyists. So gadgeteers we are! We are in league with the Palomar Mountain dumpster divers!
My own gadgeteering is focused mainly on ham radio electronic projects, but I also dabble in astronomy, rocketry, kite aerial photography and other admittedly geeky technical pursuits.

For years, now and then at night I would stop and gaze at the stars. As a Boy Scout, I earned the astronomy merit badge. When I read in the paper an announcement about a celestial event, I tried to watch it with binoculars. I could identify Polaris the North Star the Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Cassiopeia, and that's it. In early 2002 I decided to look into amateur astronomy as a hobby. Of course, with the hobby of amateur radio, and an old VW Beetle that I fiddle with to keep it running, I really needed another hobby but what the heck. This page and the pages linked to it are my experiences with my new hobby of amateur astronomy. Table of Contents This is a list of contents of my amateur astronomy pages. I hope you find something useful here.
