Amphibians Are in the class Amphibia within the subphylum Vertebrata. Are cold-blooded. They cannot maintain their body temperature by internal means. Have a moist skin with no protective scales or shells. Lay soft, gelatinous eggs with no shell Lay their eggs in water or some other situation where they will remain moist. Start their life in the water in a gilled larval state (called tadpoles in frogs and toads). Have no claws on their toes. Currently, there are about 4,000 recognized species of amphibians in the world, divided into 3 living orders. Within Kansas 30 species and subspecies are recorded from 9 families in 2 orders. The following list is adapted from "A Checklist of the Vertebrate Animals of Kansas", 3rd edition, 2005, by George Potts and Joseph Collins. Amphibians include any member of a class of cold-blooded vertebrate animals that lie inbetween the evolutionary development of fishes and reptiles. Included among them are more than 4 living species which are the frogs and toads, salamanders and newts, and caecilians .Amphibians were the first vertebrates to move from an aquatic habitat to a terrestrial one, and they are the ancestors of all reptiles, birds, and mammals. Amphibians are species of the class Amphibia and are vertebrates easily distinguished by their remarkable ability to take advantage of both aquatic and land habitats. The name amphibian, suits its nature - being derived from the Greek amphibios meaning "a double life," . Despite this distinction, however, some species are confined to the land , while other species have a completely aquatic existence Habitat Although a few species live their lives in water, most live at a portion of their's on land. They are distributed worldwide, but the majority are found in the tropical regions of the earth . Most amphibians have an aquatic larval, or tadpol, stage that metamorphises into an adult.

It is generally recognized that they originated from lobe-finned fishes and gave birth to reptiles. Usually, modern amphibians are classified into three orders: The most numerous order comprises tailless amphibians (Anura) frogs, toads, etc. more than 5000 species in total. They have a short body without a tail, almost no neck, and well-developed legs. Their hind legs are strong, 2-3 times larger than front ones and allow moving in leaps. Salamanders (Caudata) tailed amphibians is another group, which comprises about 500 species. Their main distinctive features are an elongated body, a long tail, and short, usually weak legs. Only few terrestrial salamanders can run quickly, like lizards, or even jump. The third group is Caecilians (Gymnophiona or Apoda) limbless amphibians. This group comprises amphibians resembling worms or snakes. They lack legs and have a more primitive body structure compared to other amphibians.

Amphibians
Amphibians are cold-blooded animals that possess backbones and display features that lie between those of fish and reptiles. They spend time both in water and on land. Their larvae (not yet fully developed offspring) mature in water and breathe through gills, like fish, while adults breathe air through lungs and skin. Amphibians are in the class Amphibia, which includes over 3,500 species. They are further divided into three orders: Anura (frogs and toads), Urodela (salamanders and newts), and Gymnophiona (caecilians, pronounced sih-SILL-yuhns, which are wormlike in appearance).
History
Characteristics
Amphibians are cold-blooded animals, meaning they do not have a constant body temperature but instead take on the temperature of their environment. They have moist, scaleless skin that absorbs water and oxygen, but that also makes them vulnerable to dehydration (loss of bodily fluids). Without moist conditions, their skin dries out and they die. Therefore, amphibians are most often found near ponds, marshlands, swamps, and other areas where freshwater is available. Some amphibians become inactive when conditions are unfavorable for survival. This period of inactivity is called estivation when it occurs during hot, dry weather and hibernation when it occurs in response to cold temperatures. Activity resumes when favorable conditions return.

AMPHIBIAN EVOLUTION
According to the fossil record, here is approximately when the major groups of land animals appeared: BOOKS ABOUT
AMPHIBIANS: Birds...... about 170 million years ago
Mammals.... about 220 million years ago
Reptiles... about 320 million years ago
Amphibians: about 400 million years ago
Fish....... about 500 million years ago
Life originated in the seas. The first animals were simple ones without backbones "invertebrate" animals such as segmented worms, sponges, and corals. The first fish were so simple that they didn't even have jawbones for opening and closing their mouths. The first land animals with backbones were the amphibians. The oldest amphibian fossils look like fish with thick, muscular fins. That's because amphibians arose from early fish. The first amphibians lived more in water than on dry land. So:
  • amphibians arose from fish reptiles arose from amphibians birds arose from reptiles mammals also arose form reptiles

Amphibian Facts
Class Amphibia includes toads, frogs, newts, salamanders and gymnophiona. These are cold-blooded, vertebrate animals. Read on to know some interesting amphibian facts. The word amphibian is derived from the Greek word amphibios, which means a double life. The amphibians include the animals that live in the water as well as on the land. They start their life underwater and move on the land in their adulthood. There are more than 6,000 existing species of amphibians. There are three types of amphibians such as toads, frogs and salamanders. Salamanders including mud puppies and newts belong to the order Caudata. Frogs and toads belong to the order Anura and caecilians are included in the order Apoda.
Habitat of Amphibians
Amphibians live in various environments. However, most species of amphibians require freshwater habitats such as swamps, ponds, streams or wet environments for breeding. Some of the frog species rely on the pools of water that is collected in the cup-shaped bases of plants or tree hollows.
Physical Characteristics of Amphibians
Amphibians are cold-blooded, vertebrate animals. Their body temperature changes according to the temperature changes of the surroundings. Their size is variable, ranging from 1.5 m long Japanese giant salamander to small frogs such as 1 cm long gold frog. Most frogs measure between 2-8 cm, while most salamanders are 5-20 cm in length. Most species of caecilians are 10-50 cm in size. They have a soft, smooth skin, covered with moist slime, mucus. Their skin is permeable and allows the gases and liquids to pass through it. It is a peculiar characteristic of the amphibians. In many species of amphibians, mucus-secreting glands in the skin are modified to produce the toxins that repel the predators. They have a sticky tongue to catch the food.
