The UC Santa Cruz Department of Anthropology encompasses three subdisciplines: anthropological archaeology, cultural anthropology, and physical anthropology. While each field has its own area of study and research practices, together they offer a broad range of perspectives on the politics and experience of being human. To develop a multifaceted view of humans and their diversity, undergraduates are required to pursue courses in all subfields as part of their major. Graduates specialize in one of the subdisciplines, although conversations across all three may be found in proseminars, colloquia, and seminars.

Home Library French Literature Companion While the term is often used in its general sense of a philosophical conception of human nature or the human condition, it now more commonly refers to two groups of academic disciplines, both closely linked with archaeology. Physical anthropology, which studies variations in characteristics of the human body, is closely related to the medical and biological sciences and has been controversially invoked in theories of race, by writers like Gobineau . Social or cultural anthropology, also known as ethnology, is the better-known branch, in which French contributions have been internationally influential. In this sense, anthropology is the study of human societies, and therefore closely related to sociology . It has mainly focused on pre-literate or pre-technological societies which are often regarded as primitive, though many anthropologists have emphasized the extent of their similarity to modern industrial societies. The two broad directions of anthropological enquiry are the description and collection of data, often termed ethnography, and the theoretical reflection on it. In France, the two activities have tended to be separated. Many major writers have contributed significantly to ethnography, among them Zola Gide , and Leiris , while theoretical anthropology has been particularly important in intellectual debate.

Anthropology is conceptually rich, drawing on theories and methods from the sciences, the humanities, and other social sciences. As such, it constitutes a bridging discipline, itself interdisciplinary, and serves as an excellent basis for a liberal arts education. Anthropology is good preparation for further study in such diverse fields as law, social work, museology, medicine, urban and regional planning, journalism, and business. Many of the department's graduates have gone on to further study in anthropology at the top graduate researchers in universities, museums, and government agencies, but today anthropologists can also be found in industry, public health, education, and various kinds of social survey research and community organizing. Give to Lawrence Web Mail Voyager A-Z Index ... Staff Anthropology Anthropology is the study of humanity in all its cultural, biological, and historical diversity. A synthesis of scientific and humanistic concerns and methods, it attempts to distinguish universal human characteristics from those unique to individual social groups, and to understand the reasons for differences between individuals and groups. The insights of anthropology are essential for a critical understanding of the problems of the contemporary world. Anthropology informs a public confronted with choices to be made with respect to changing value systems; competing social goals; ethnic, religious, class, gender, and race relations; new and emerging technologies; environmental and cultural resources management; changing paradigms of health, wellness, and disease; and international relations. Anthropology offers both unique theoretical perspectives and a particular set of methodological approaches. The faculty considers it essential that we educate our students in both. Students should take away from their studies a substantive knowledge of the commonalities and differences in human experiences and also an understanding of how that knowledge is obtained and evaluated.

Anthropology is a biological and historical social science that helps us learn how groups of people are the same, and how they are different in all parts of the world Anthropologists do research in many places and study how people live now and how they may have lived in the past (using the study of Archaeology ). They research in modern cities, small villages, tribes , and in the countryside . They study how groups of people consider time space life , etc. Applied anthropology is a type of anthropology that uses information, discovered using science to help people. One recent use of applied anthropology is the return of ancient ways of successful farming to people living in South America . Another use of applied anthropology is the learning of languages close to dying out and the teaching of young people the language of their ancestors. The four big kinds of anthropology are:

The Australian Anthropological Society represents the anthropologists of Australia. The goals of the Society are to promote the advancement of anthropology as a professional discipline grounded in the systematic pursuit of knowledge, to promote its responsible use in the service of humankind, and to promote professional training and practice in anthropology. AAS supports the development of the discipline in university departments and schools at graduate and post-graduate level. Through its annual conference, journal, newsletter and online publications the Society provides forums where anthropologists can engage in debates central to anthropological theory and practice. While historically associated with small-scale societies which were remote from the centres of world power, increasingly anthropologists have become involved in analysing the board-room as well as the bar-room, sporting tribes and nomadic professionals as well as wider systems such as capitalism and processes such as globalisation. We identify the myths of the rational as well as rationality among the mystics. Anthropology makes strange worlds familiar and the familiar world strange. Anthropological work is broad in scope and includes academic research, teaching, consultancies and public commentary. The geographic position and colonial history of Australia have led to the development of leading anthropological scholarship and practice in the fields of Australian Aboriginal, Melanesian and other Pacific studies as well as Indigenous land claims and native title.

Both Razib and Dienekes have reviewed a paper on the population genetics of Central Asian peoples . To make sense of Central Asian ancestry has been challenging, to say the least. In particular, the problem is compounded by nomadic peoples without much written history nor uncovered archaeological record.

What is anthropology? Breaking down the word anthropology, its origins are from the Greek word anthropos "human" and logia "study." Anthropology itself is the holistic study of humanity. Where other academic disciplines may have taken a narrow stance on an issue anthropology chooses to incorporate anything and everything it is to be human with the ultimate goal of defining who we are, how we came to be and where we are going. In essence we all practice anthropology every day because of its fundamental ground of curiosity. We are curious about ourselves and curious about others.
    The Types Of Anthropology
Post-Modern Anthropology is subdivided into 5 distinct categories:

One "lesson" well and truly learned in past disasters is the "tyranny of the urgent" in which sex and gender concerns are unrecognized or fall off the agenda. Yet as residents and community organizations attest, and researchers document, sustainable disaster relief and recovery cannot be achieved without taking into account the gender dimensions of disasters. We urge gender-responsive disaster outreach and action as a matter of urgency now and throughout the relief and recovery period—the health and safety of women and girls depend upon it. In this same spirit, the GDN will reach out to local and regional women's and community groups to offer support as possible. Please put the

    What this handout is about
This handout briefly situates anthropology as a discipline of study within the social sciences. It provides an introduction to the kinds of writing that you might encounter in your anthropology courses, describes some of the expectations that your instructors may have, and suggests some ways to approach your assignments. It also includes links to information on citation practices in anthropology and resources for writing anthropological research papers.

What kinds of writing assignments might I encounter in my anthropology courses?
The types of writing that you do in your anthropology course will depend on your instructor's learning and writing goals for the class, as well as which subfield of anthropology you are studying. Each writing exercise is intended to help you to develop particular skills. Most introductory and intermediate level anthropology writing assignments ask for a critical assessment of a group of readings, course lectures, or concepts. Here are three common types of anthropology writing assignments:
    Critical essays
This is the type of assignment most often given in anthropology courses (and many other college courses). Your anthropology courses will often require you to evaluate how successfully or persuasively a particular anthropological theory addresses, explains, or illuminates a particular ethnographic or archaeological example. When your instructor tells you to "argue," "evaluate," or "assess," s/he is probably asking for some sort of critical essay. (For more help with deciphering your assignments, see the Writing Center handout on
