Apiculture and Sericulture Drawing from its recognized success in sericulture and apiculture in East Africa, ICIPE is training and supporting selected farmers and women's groups from around Kakamega Forest in bee keeping and silkworm rearing programs.
Apiculture:
  • The Co-operative societies were supplied with 62 model Langstroth bee-hives and 10 honey harvesting suits during the initiation of the program. Four local carpenters were trained to make the modern Langstroth beehives for the Kakamega community.

Training and promotion of modern methods of beekeeping to the community including the use of modern beekeeping equipment The project is promoting the more efficient langstroth hives among the community adjacent to Kakamega Forest Traditional log hives that have been used around Kakamega Forest are inefficient Community members are assisted to market their honey in the form of high quality products
Sericulture:
  • Mulberry cuttings for silk worm rearing were supplied to all the co-operative societies

Mulberry plants used for silkworm rearing are being cultivated by a number of community members and groups
  • Some of the groups (e.g. Kambiri CBD group) were given land by the project to initiate their income generating projects

Beekeeping In India
Introduction Honey and beekeeping have a long history in India. Honey was the first sweet food tasted by the ancient Indian inhabiting rock shelters and forests. He hunted bee hives for this gift of god. India has some of the oldest records of beekeeping in the form of paintings by prehistoric man in the rock shelters. With the development of civilization, honey acquired an unique status in the lives of the ancient Indians. They regarded honey as a magical substance that controlled the fertility of women, cattle, as also their lands and crops. The recent past has witnessed a revival of the industry in the rich forest regions along the sub-Himalayan mountain ranges and the Western Ghats, where it has been practiced in its simplest form.
In India beekeeping has been mainly forest based. Several natural plant species provide nectar and pollen to honey bees. Thus, the raw material for production of honey is available free from nature. Bee hives neither demand additional land space nor do they compete with agriculture or animal husbandry for any input. The beekeeper needs only to spare a few hours in a week to look after his bee colonies. Beekeeping is therefore ideally suited to him as a part-time occupation. Beekeeping constitutes a resource of sustainable income generation to the rural and tribal farmers. It provides them valuable nutrition in the form of honey, protein rich pollen and brood. Bee products also constitute important ingredients of folk and traditional medicine.

These are extension articles written by past and present members of the apiculture program at NCSU. They are organized in the following structure.
http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/entomology/apiculture/Beekeeping_notes.html
.B Beekeeping Notes These are extension articles written by past and present members of the Apiculture program at NCSU. They are organized in the following structure. Honey bee biology . Honey bees are living, breathing animals. Therefore it is critical that beekeepers obtain a fundamental understanding of honey bees as a biological system. This includes understanding their nest architecture, development, anatomy, genetics, behavior, ecology, and evolution. Understanding what bees do naturally facilitates their husbandry by working with them, rather than against them. Moreover, understanding their biology develops a deeper appreciation and admiration of the bees.
Honey bee management . Based on a thorough understanding of honey bee biology, a beekeeper may then effectively manipulate honey bees in a managed setting. Subjects include how to properly keep bees and what not to do. Hive construction, beekeeping equipment, and apiary establishment are also important areas of understanding. Treatment and prevention of the many diseases that afflict honey bees is also a significant management issue. Honey bee industry . Managed honey bees in the US account for over $14 billion each year in pollination services and increased crop yields, and thus is a vital part of the agriculture industry in the country. Knowing the history of beekeeping, what crops require bees for cross pollination and fruit set, the honey market, and the uses of other hive products are important aspects of the apiculture industry.

This section comments on a range of beekeeping activities and products throughout New Zealand.
Key points
  • Beekeeper numbers continued to decline in 2005/06, but hive numbers increased slightly, reversing the trend of the past several years. The New Zealand honey crop increased by 734 tonnes, up from 9689 tonnes in the 2004/05 season to 10 423 tonnes in 2005/06. World honey prices fell to five-year lows in 2004/05 but recovered a little in 2005/06. This was partly due to the falling New Zealand dollar and anti-dumping tariffs imposed by the United States (US) on Chinese and Argentinean honey. Sales of live bees to Canada fell again. This is due to the low honey prices Canadian beekeepers are receiving, and large honey stocks still on hand. Access to the US for live bees was finally achieved after 30 years of negotiations, but few bees were sent because of high compliance costs. The beekeeping industry waged a vigorous technical and political battle during 2005/06 after the release of a risk analysis of imported honey and bee products, completed by Biosecurity New Zealand. Beekeepers are concerned about the huge cost increases for fuel, sugar, varroa treatment and containers: all caused by rising commodity prices and the falling value of the New Zealand exchange rate.

The locals would have been well aware that honey produced during certain times of the year was naturally poisonous. Honey yielded from the nectar of such plants as Rhododendron ponticum and Azalea pontica contain alkaloids that are toxic to humans but harmless to bees. After the offending blooms have stopped flowering, beekeepers in areas where these plants are common (such as the area of present-day Turkey where this incident occurred) routinely remove this toxic honey so it doesn't contaminate subsequently produced stores. The poisonous honey is then fed back to the bees during time of dearth if it hasn't been used first for national defense [2].
(South and Central American Indians used similar honey for ceremonial purges and perhaps for "vision questing" see notes following Chapter Two, "The Honeymoon's Over". Deaths have been reported in New Zealand which were attributed to the consumption of honey originating from the "wharangi bush", Melicope ternata [3]. Another New Zealand plant, Coriaria arborea, produces nectar that is safe for incorporation into honey but furnishes toxic honeydew [4] . Other locales where toxic honey has been reported on occasion include Mexico Datura spp., Hungary Datura spp., belladonna=Atropa spp. and Hyoscamus niger, Brazil Serjania lethalis and the southwest U.S. Gelsemium sempervirens [5].)

    NEW APICULTURE PILOT PROGRAM
    AVAILABLE IN 21 STATES
WASHINGTON, Oct 15, 2008 - RMA has announced two newly developed crop insurance pilot programs for apiculture, beginning in crop year 2009. The new insurance products are area index programs intended to offset the loss of the value of apiculture including honey production, collection of pollen, wax, and breeding using either a rainfall or a vegetation index. “We have made the development of insurance products for apiculture a priority for addressing the needs of apiculture producers,” said RMA Administrator Eldon Gould. “Both these products, developed by private submitters and approved under Section 508(h) of the Federal Crop Insurance Act, will use new technology to help remedy the inability to directly measure apiculture production across the diverse environments on U.S. farms and ranches.” To test each index in various climate, soil, and weather conditions, the programs are available in six regions across the country: the warm and humid Southeast, the cool and humid Northeast, the Northern Great Plains, the Southern Great Plains, the semi-arid Southwest, and the intermountain region of the Northwest.
