      • Undergraduate Graduate News: Message from the Chair
Paul Shackel Thank you for your interest in our department. Our program has grown and changed over the past several decades. The department became independent of Sociology in 1974, a Masters in Applied Anthropology was created in 1984, and Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2007. The Department of Anthropology is now known for its strong theoretical orientation and it is nationally recognized for being an excellent applied program. Our faculty work with and make connections between local peoples, national governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), inter-governmental agencies, and academic institutions. We have a strong commitment to preserving and transmitting the knowledge of the past, as well as to illuminating and confronting the challenges of the present. Anthropology is unique at the University of Maryland because of our ability to teach smaller than average class sizes which encourage the development of strong student-faculty mentoring relationships. Undergraduate enrollment has increased steadily over the past few years, and we continue to attract the best and brightest graduate students. We are very excited about our new Ph.D. cohort, and we continue as always to prize our M.A.A. and B.A. students. I hope you find our website useful. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

What is Applied Anthropology?
Anthropology as we know it today has been around for a little over a hundred years, along with the “four fields” of archaeology and cultural biological , and linguistic anthropology. Up until recently it was largely a scholarly or academic enterprise, with most anthropologists engaged in university teaching and research or affiliated with museums. Anthropology has been put to practical use throughout its history. One early example is the formation of the U.S. government Bureau of American Ethnology in 1879. The term “applied anthropology” was first used in England in 1906. But the field of applied anthropology actually dates to 1941, with the formation of the Society for Applied Anthropology. Applied anthropology (also known as “practical anthropology” and as “practicing anthropology”) can be defined as the application of anthropological knowledge and skills to the needs of society
This fifth field of anthropology has increased dramatically in the past three decades. According to the

What is Applied Anthropology?
What is Applied Anthropology? Applied Anthropology is the practical application of anthropological data, methodology, perspective and theory to asses and solve contemporary social problems. Applied anthropology involves applying anthropology's holistic approach to researching the "other" and applies anthropology's four sub-fields, to solve practical problems. Applied anthropologists are involved with government, businesses, social, political and economic disciplines. These anthropologists provide a unique perspective to areas not previously considered relevant to anthropology. Applied anthropology can be reduced to four basic sub-fields; specified goals, corporate assignments, administrative program development and consultants as cultural brokers. Traditional anthropology primarily focuses on tribal studies and dying or extinct peoples and cultures throughout history. Many, when asked what anthropology is, have little or no idea and give the stereo-typical analogy of Indiana Jones, an archaeologist studying relics of the past. However, that view is all too narrow and anthropology is much more than that. Anthropology since its heyday has evolved into a super-modern analytical ideology which can easily be adapted to solve life's contemporary problems by being multi-disciplinary and using theory from economics, history, psychology, sociology and numerous others by studying internal and external human motivations. Thus anthropology serves as an immortal applied philosophy.

Applied Anthropology, the fifth subfield. Cultural Anthropology...prevents us from taking our own culture too seriously. As Clifford Geertz (1984: 272 reminds us, one of the tasks of cultural anthropology is to keep the world off balance; pulling out rugs, upsetting tea tables, setting off fire crackers. It has been the office of others to reassure; ours to unsettle. The anthropological perspective, with its emphasis on the comparative study of cultures, should lead us to the conclusion that our culture is just one way of life among many found in the world and that it represents one way (among many possible ways) to adapt to a particular set of environmental conditions To succeed in fighting terrorism, we will need to better understand people from other cultures and the conditions under which they live their lives What is applied anthropology?
