Bird Watching on Lake Michigan
We often see swans flying over Lake Michigan. They like the marshes on the tributaries near us. We occasionally see the American bald eagle, sand hill cranes flying in formation, Canadian geese and many varieties of ducks. There is a pileated woodpecker that hangs around the neighborhood and several sorts of owls we hear at night and occasionally see.
The hummingbirds we fed all summer have left and now we get chickadees, nuthatches, cardinals and downy woodpeckers. Posted by Barbara Spring at 2:42 PM 0 comments Labels: swan

What Next for Great Lakes Weather.
Heavy winds from west to east caused rip currents and cross currents on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This photo was taken on Tuesday. The weather was quite warm and the unusual weather pattern has now changed to cold with rain.
What next? Heavy snow is predicted for this winter. I like to ski.

Welcome! It is 8:39:24 PM on Monday, November 1, 2010. There have been Aqua-Nuts served. Last Update: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 Tropical Marine Ecology serves as an intensive field-based introduction to the ecology of estuarine and marine environments. INTERESTED? Take a look at the MARINE ECOLOGY SYLLABUS for more information. The primary goal of the course is to immerse you in field experiences that link with readings, lectures, discussions, labs, and discovery-oriented investigations of the environments of San Salvador, Bahamas, the Everglades and the Florida Keys. Several topics will be covered in depth. These include ecology and geology of the Bahamas Everglades, and Florida Keys, marine ecology, coral reef ecology, intertidal zonation, grassbed ecology, taxonomy of vertebrates and invertebrates of coral reefs, lagoons, and tidal flats, statistical analyses of data, astronomy, and group projects concerning biological and physical analyses of select marine habitats. These images should provide a hint, a mere glimpse, into the beauty and complexity of a wide variety of ecosystems. So, enjoy!

This course explores the biological, chemical and physical features of lakes and streams. These features are related to general ecological concepts and environmental concerns. The course focuses on the invertebrate and fish communities, and the physiological adaptations of species to the aquatic environment. Theoretical approaches and practical techniques will be addressed. In addition, this course includes considerable field work. The laboratory introduces you to a variety of aquatic ecosystems and species and relevant sampling procedures and equipment. The laboratory experience is essential to this course.

Marine life at your coast
Welcome to coasts and reefs. On these pages you can learn more about marine life and how fascinated men started to study marine mamals and fish and finally tried to cover all species. But that is not all, as a biologist and diver I like to show you the diversity of marine live at various coasts as well.
Floris Bennema, the Netherlands.
Click your coast
Coasts and reefs are nice to explore. In most cases you'll find a fascinating marine life. Unfortunately we can just visit a fraction of the coasts of the world. How do al that other sites look like? Divers with their camera's will show you, here is my contribution. Click on a red spot on the map to find out more about the coast
Zoom in
Even dull looking marine ports contain interesting species when you zoom in. Collect some material and study it under a microscope. This year I started to look at small organisms along the coast of the Waddensea. Text in Dutch but many microscopic photos as well.

Ecology of coasts

Aquatic Ecology
What kind of work do we do in Aquatic Ecosystems? The Aquatic Ecology Program integrates many facets of nature, humans and the environment. Aquatic ecosystems include all things linked to water. We work with all aspects of aquatic ecosystem habitats, including streams, lakes, ponds and wetlands. We also work with aquatic ecosystem organisms such as aquatic bugs, frogs, toads, and fish. The Aquatic Ecology program identifies emerging aquatic resource issues, gathers information and develops guidance and strategies to help address these issues, and transfer this technology to our field biologists.
