Created: 19th October 2004 Arachnids Contact Us Like this page? Send it to a friend! What does the word 'arachnid' mean to you? You probably think 'spider'. This is understandable, considering spiders are by far the most common arachnids. Arachnophobia means fear of spiders, and the word 'arachnid' comes from Arachne, a girl in Greek mythology who got turned into a spider after displeasing the goddess Athene. However, if spiders are arachnids, then why the separate words? The answer to this is that the arachnid class includes not only spiders, but also scorpions, ticks, mites, harvestmans, vinegaroons, windscorpions, and pseudoscorpions. With all these diverse organisms in one group, what is it that defines an arachnid? Read on to find out. Anatomical Features Arachnids are highly adaptable and are found all over the world: in the most well-kept European lawns, the Sahara desert, the jungles of South America, the African rain forests, the human scalp, the

General Fallacies
Myth: "Arachnid" is just a fancy name for spider. Fact: There are eleven orders of arachnids. These include the scorpions; mites and ticks; harvestmen ; pseudoscorpions; whipscorpions; solpugids ; and spiders. It's like the relation of beetles with insects: beetles constitute one order of insects, the Coleoptera, but not all insects are beetles. Similarly, not all arachnids are spiders. A spider, Missulena occatoria (Australia) A whipscorpion, Abaliella dicranotarsalis A scorpion, Charmus indicus (India) A pseudoscorpion, Chelifer tuberculatus (Algeria) Examples of 7 of the 11 orders of arachnids. Only one is a spider. A whipspider, Paraphrynus mexicanus (Mexico, Arizona) A solpugid, Eremohax sp. (Mexico, southwest USA) A harvestman, Phalangium opilio (worldwide)
Myth: You can always tell a spider because it has eight legs. Fact: Not exactly. Scorpions, harvestmen, ticks, and in fact all arachnids - not just spiders - have four pairs of legs (see illustrations above). Insects have three pairs. Also, notice that I said "four pairs" instead of "eight." The number of leg pairs (one pair per leg-bearing segment) is more significant than individual legs, which can be lost.

Scorpiones (scorpions) Life Eukaryotes Opisthokonta Metazoa (animals) ... Arachnida Scorpions are ancient animals and fossil records indicate that they were already in existence about 425 – 450 million years ago during the Silurian period and evolved from an amphibious ancestor. They occur in habitats ranging from forest to deserts but it is in the arid areas that they are most common and diverse. Like the insects and spiders, scorpions belong to the phylum Arthropoda and like the spiders they belong to the Arachnida but belong to a different order, Scorpiones. On this page: See also:
Classification
Scorpions are a diverse group of arachnids and include 16 families, 159 genera with 1260 described species worldwide. In southern Africa they fall into two superfamilies and four families: Superfamily Scorpionoidea (thin-tail scorpions) - Non-venomous Family: Scorpionidae Found in Africa and Asia, with a total of 4 genera.

Brief article on harvestmen from South Africa s Biodiversity Explorer.
    http://www.biodiversityexplorer.org/arachnids/harvestmen/
Opiliones (harvestmen) Life Eukaryotes Opisthokonta Metazoa (animals) ... Arachnida Opiliones are commonly called shepherd spiders, harvest spiders or harvestmen. 'Opilio' in Latin means shepherd and the name is probably derived from the fact that in earlier times, European shepherds sometimes walked on stilts to observe their flocks better and Opiliones look as if they are on stilts when walking. The term harvestmen or harvest spiders was a result of them being seen only during harvesting time. They are also referred to as daddy long legs but should not be confused with similarly named spiders, the Pholcidae . Opiliones are not spiders and have no spinning organs, fangs or venom glands and are harmless to man. Opiliones (body about 5 mm). [image N. Larsen ©] Opiliones are not well known as they and rarely seen due to their cryptic lifestyle. They live in damp forest areas under leaf-litter where they feed on small insects and other invertebrates, snails, fungi and dead animal and vegetable matter. They are more numerous at sea level and numbers diminish with altitude. The head and thorax are not separated by narrow constriction as with spiders. They have round bulbous bodies and very long legs and generally small (bodies up to about 7 mm long). Their cryptic colouration affords protection from predators but should they be attacked, they are usually able to repel the attacker with a repugnant secretion from odiferous glands.

editLink('skunkworks/.accounts/200310302512') 2010/10/09 00:24:49.946 GMT-4 By Phil Myers Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Arachnida Members of this Class This large Class of arthropods includes over 60,000 described species (and most likely a very large number of so-far undescribed ones). Spiders make up the majority of these (over 50,000 described species); with mites and ticks next largest (around 48,200 species). The Arachnida also includes a diverse array of smaller groups, including scorpions (1200 species), whip scorpions (100 species), palpigrades (60 species), pseudoscorpions (2000 species), solpugids (900 species), and harvestmen (5000 species). Nearly all species are terrestrial. Arachnids have a pair of tagmata called a prosoma and opisthosoma. The prosoma is partially or completely covered with a carapace-like shield. The opisthosoma may be segmented or unsegmented. The appendages on the opithosoma are absent or modified, being used as spinnerets (spiders) or pectines (probably sensory in function, found in scorpions). Respiration is via tracheae or book lungs; it is cutaneous in many small arachnids. Sources:

Family: Salticidae (jumping spiders) Life Eukaryotes Opisthokonta Metazoa (animals) ... Araneae Commonly called Jumping spiders, the Salticidae are also affectionately referred to as Charlies, Herbies or Salties. They are very common around the home and their anthropomorphic nature endears them to most people. The family name is derived from the Latin "salto" which means to dance with pantomimic gestures (See mating behaviour below). This is the largest spider family and includes more than 5000 species worldwide. There are 46 genera in South Africa. These spiders are harmless to man although there have been complaints where this comical, engaging animal has been accused of nasty bites. Salticidae. [image N. Larsen Salticid eating a grasshopper. [image N. Larsen This family is easily identified by the 2 large anterior median (front central, like 2 headlights) eyes. These binocular, telescopic eyes can identify detail and colour for up to 20 body-lengths making the spider a very successful hunter. The 6 other eyes detect movement and prey. The 2 wide-angled secondary eyes detect object up to 30-40cms. At about 20cms it turns to face the object, at 8-10cms is able to identify, at 3-4cms it will start to stalk and at 1-2cms the attack is launched. Salticidae. [image
