Arachnids
Arachnids (pronounced uh-RACK-nidz; class Arachnida) form the second-largest group of land arthropods (phylum Arthropoda) after the class Insecta. There are over 70,000 species of arachnids that include such familiar creatures as scorpions, spiders, harvestmen or daddy longlegs, and ticks and mites, as well as the less common whip scorpions, pseudoscorpions, and sun spiders. The marine horseshoe crabs and sea spiders are near relatives.
Physical characteristics
Arachnids have paired, jointed appendages (parts that are attached to the main body), a hardened exoskeleton ( exo Most arachnids live on land and breathe by means of book lungs (socalled because their thin membranes are arranged like the pages of a book) or by tracheae (small tubes that distribute air from the outside throughout the body), or both. Most are flesh-eating predators. They feed by piercing the body of their prey and directly consuming its body fluids or by releasing digestive secretions that predigest the food before they eat it.
Scorpions
Spiders
In spiders, the abdomen is separated from the joined head and thorax by a narrow waist. The large and powerful first appendages of some spiders contain poison glands at their base, while the tips serve as fangs that inject the poison into prey. The second appendages of spiders are long and leglike. In male spiders, these appendages each contain an organ used to transfer sperm to the female. Some species of spiders have only book lungs for breathing, while others have both book lungs and tracheae.

Family: Lycosidae (wolf spiders) Life Eukaryotes Opisthokonta Metazoa (animals) ... Araneae The Lycosidae or wolf spiders, as they are commonly called, are often seen dashing from under the grass trying to escape the lawn mower or doing freestyle in the pool. The family name and common name are derived from the Greek word "lycosa" meaning "wolf" due to the spiders' hunting method of ambushing and running down its prey. (The Tarantula is in fact a European lycosid and the name is incorrectly used to describe the America Theraphosids.) Research has shown that the Lycosidae are important in agriculture, as they are efficient controlling agents of insect pests. They are harmless to man. Lycosa sp. [image N. Larsen Lycosid female with egg sac. [image N. Larsen Lycosid female carrying young on her back. [image N. Larsen Lycosid with parasitic wasp larva. [image N. Larsen Most of the genera of this family have abandoned a web-bound existence and have adopted a free ranging lifestyle, much like the Pisauridae. It is a large family of mainly diurnal (there are some species that are nocturnal), terrestrial (ground living) spiders with a worldwide distribution with 28 genera occurring in South Africa. Being diurnal their eyesight is well developed as opposed to nocturnal species where the other senses are more developed. Eyesight plays a particularly important part in their mating activities that include waving of the pedipalps and raising of the front legs as if following a dance routine (much like the Salticidae).

Arachnids
Arachnida (uh-RAC-nuh-duh) is a class in the phylum arthropoda. The study of spiders and their kin is known as arachnology . A scientist who studies spiders is known as an arachnologists . An unreasonable fear of spiders is known as arachnophobia There are over 100,000 known species including spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, sea spiders and horseshoe crabs. Most live in a terrestrial habitat. Among the exceptions are the sea spiders, the horseshoe crab, and the fishing spider.
Arachnid Characteristics
  • Adapted to kill with poison glands, fangs, and stingers. Two body divisions - cephalothorax and abdomen Four pairs of walking legs One pair of chelicerae (claw-like fangs with poision glands at their base) One pair of pedipalps (aid in chewing and reproduction)
SPIDERS Spiders are not insects. They belong to a group of animals called arachnids. Spiders have no wings or antennae. They have eight legs, which they use to crawl across their webs. Spiders' webs are made of silk. The silk is strong and comes from the spiders body. Most spiders are helpful because they eat all kinds of insects and rarely harm humans. Some people do have an allergic reaction to a bite. Most of us never realize that a spider has bitten us, so we call them harmless. However, the black widow spider does have a poisonous bite. Spiders are usually small. But the tarantula could be as large as your hand.
Physical Characteristics:
  • Body in two main parts Hair covers most of body; sometimes thick, but usually sparse

BACK TO NPARL CLICK HERE... Insects are animals that have: 1 pair of antennae 2 pairs of wings (if any) 3 pairs of legs 3 body parts: head, thorax and abdomen and an exoskeleton ("exo" means their skeleton is on the outside!) There are a group of insects called "true bugs" that differ from other insects in several ways. One way they are different is that they eat using a feeding tube instead of chewing jaws. You probably have seen Boxelder bugs a lot on HOT days at school or at home. Make sure you be careful though because their only way to defend themselves is to let off a stinky odor!!! That's probably why no other insects or animals like to eat them. That's right....Boxelder bugs have no natural enemies, except for YOU ! Boxelder bugs will leave a red stain if you step on them and so the only easy way to get them out of your sight is to get out your vacuum cleaner! Many people think anything with a lot of legs, like a spider, is an insect. But if it has eight legs as do spiders, ticks and scorpions, it is considered an arachnid, not an insect.

Welcome to the world of virtual insects!
If you like real insects, you would love virtual insects because you can see them big without a microscope. Virtual insects are clean and have no smell, they will not bite or sting you. And some times they look even better than real insects. Besides learning insects, you will learn new computer technology which is called virtual reality. Virtual reality is a computer interface that maximizes our natural perception abilities. Static two-dimensional images are often deceiving; it may be hard to reconstruct scales and distances between objects. Thus, it is important to implement the third dimension and to bring depth to objects. There are two major components of three-dimensional virtual reality:
  • Movement - our eye can easily reconstruct the third dimension if the object moves.

70. Scorpion Stings And Venoms
Photographs of highly venomous African scorpions, prevention, symptoms, and treatment.
http://www.biodiversityexplorer.org/arachnids/scorpions/stings_and_venoms.htm
Scorpion stings and venoms Back to scorpion home The term scorpionism is the medical term used to describe the syndrome of scorpion stings. We focus here on the thick-tailed scorpions in the family Buthidae , which are the most dangerous scorpions in South Africa (See Dangerous scorpions: how to identify them ). Find out here about how to prevent being stung , the signs and symptoms of scorpionism , and scorpionism management
Introduction
In South Africa we are fortunate to have a fascinating and diverse scorpion fauna and yet a low incidence of scorpionism, unlike areas in the south-western U.S.A., Mexico, east-central South America, north Africa, the Middle East and India where the incidence of serious scorpion envenomation is high. Worldwide, there are about 100,000 cases of scorpion envenomation resulting in approximately 800 deaths per year. Locally more than 95% of cases of scorpionism results in no more than local pain lasting from several minutes to about 4 hours with most of the Ischnurid stings resulting in no more than a pin prick. In South Africa there are only 1 to 4 deaths a year resulting from Parabuthus envenomation (nothing in comparison to car, crime, sport or health related deaths).
