As we progress in our "tweaking" more and more of the pages will contain " LAST UPDATED ON " lines at the top so you can readily see the date on which any particular page was last edited. If the information on this website is crucial to you (e.g., you're thinking about importing your own RV or you need the latest update of The Tarantula Keeper's Guide 's Addenda and Errata Sheet), you probably should check any important pages frequently just to be sure you have the most current information.
INTRODUCTION
From about 285 million years ago until about 195 million years ago (the precise dates are still debated) nearly all the Earth's landmasses were stitched together into a single supercontinent called Pangea . For something like 90 million years it might have been possible to walk from Cape Town to Anchorage, from Beijing to Santiago. This was the age of unity, truly "Middle Earth." But in this unity there was also immense variety and change. These were grand times. We name this website after Pangea in the spirit of the diversity and dynamism within that unity. As always, in our webpages there are no passwords, no Java, no cookies, no pop-ups. We don't even use animated graphics. Simple is better. In fact, we try to keep our graphics smaller than 50 Kb each to reduce loading times. (Sometimes we fail miserably on the graphics' size, though. But, we try to remember to warn you in advance.)

Chlorippe seraphina , a butterfly from the collection at the Museum. Our leading position in insect natural history, in both academic and applied fields, is based on the expertise of the staff, their use and development of the Museum's unrivalled collections of insects, mites and spiders, outstanding library resources, and modern laboratory facilities. The Museum's collection of insects and other terrestrial arthropods, including spiders, mites and myriapods, comprises about 28 million specimens. It is the most comprehensive in the world and includes named representatives of about half of the more than one million described species. About 100 research, curatorial, support staff and postgraduate students work regularly in the department. Our scientists use the collections and other resources, including the Museum's extensive libraries, in a wide range of research projects, covering many parts of the world.

Arachnid Origins and Evolution
According to the Ancient Greeks a young woman named Arachne challenged the godess Athenae to a weaving contest. Athenae won and, distraught, Arachne tried to hang herself, only to be turned into a spider by the angry goddess, condemned to weave forever as a warning to presumptuous mortals. Like the Greek myth, my research here in Berlin is also trying to discover where spiders and the other arachnids came from. What were their ancestors like ? When did they first appear ? And how do the different groups such as spiders, scorpions and mites, relate to each other ? Click here to continue
