Clusters of Megalithic Cairns are dotted around the Slieve na Caillaigh hills at Loughcrew, the main concentrations are on Carnbane East where Cairn T is the centrepiece and Carnbane West where Cairn L is located. The illumination of the passage and chamber at the Winter solstice sunrise in Newgrange is world famous. Less well known is the Equinox illumination at sunrise in Cairn T at Loughcrew. The backstone of the chamber is illuminated by a beam of light at sunrise on the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes.
The sun light is shaped by the stones of the entrance and passage and descends the backstone while moving from left to the right illuminating the solar symbols. The key to Loughcrew Cairn T is available at Loughcrew Gardens . The owner of the land on Carnbane West where Cairn L is located is not allowing public access to the site.
Equinox Stone - Loughcrew Cairn T Cairn T or Hag's Cairn is of similar design to Newgrange. Traditionally described as a Passage Tomb, the wonderfully decorated backstone shows that the Cairn has a clear astronomical purpose.

Hau kola!
is a typical greeting in Lakota and means "Hello friend." Contemporary Lakota also use Mitakuye oyasin as a greeting. It means "all my relatives" or "we are all related". The purpose of these web pages is to present my research on the astronomy of the Lakota people as well as general information on archaeoastronomy and ethnoastronomy. This web site is revised several times each year and will be in a constant state of "construction." Look at Online Articles for a short article I prepared on Lakota Ethnoastronomy, and at History of the Lakota People for a brief history. I also will include brief sections from my forthcoming book on 19 th Century Lakota astronomy. Incorporating Archaeoastronomy and Ethnoastronomy into an Astronomy Course is the PowerPoint version of a talk, with notes, that I gave at the American Association of Physics Teachers meeting in Albuquerque, NM, on 11 January 2005. The Photos section of this site includes photographs I've taken of Lakota sites and people.

The pillars were known as "Namoratunga" or "stone people" in the Turkana language. They had been said to have been built for an astronomical purpose, to reckon the Borana calendar, and were reputed to be a couple of thousand years old. They had petroglyphs on them, some matching the ancient property symbols of the Kush, a people of the Sudan who had once conquered Egypt (in the 8th Century B.C.) and whose language has yet to be deciphered. From maps of ancient Kush, I knew that the front of almost all their pyramids appeared to face the star Sirius, which has not changed its position in the sky very much for the last several thousand years. We had a description of the Borana calendar, but this did not make astronomical sense. For example, the new year of the Borana calendar was said to occur when the star beta Triangulum was "in conjunction" with the new moon (new, give or take a couple of days). A new moon is, of course, close to the sun (i.e., a thin crescent), and consequently found in the twilight sky. However, the star beta Triangulum is a 3rd magnitude star and could not been seen in twilight. Thus, we could not even get the Borana new year started according to the description we had from anthropologists.

The Kaali meteorite was the last giant meteorite that fell in a densely populated region of the world. Its fall on the inhabited island of Saaremaa evidently caused extensive damage and possibly also numerous victims, it has been compared with an explosion of a small nuclear bomb. The fall of the meteorite was historically remarkable as an event and for its influences on human culture. Besides that, a new landform emerged as the result of the explosion, well fit for a fortification, a watering place and a sacrificial site. The archaeological investigation in Kaali has confirmed the unique nature of the crater field in this respect Contact: cps '01

Inspiration of Astronomical Phenomena
INSAP conferences explore the rich and diverse ways in which people of the past and present incorporate astronomical events into literary, visual, and performance arts. This emphasis distinguishes INSAP from other conferences that focus on archeoastronomy, ethnoastronomy, or cultural astronomy. INSAP provides a mechanism for a broad sampling of artists, writers, musicians, historians, philosophers, scientists, and others to talk about the diversity of astronomical inspiration. Invited speakers scheduled to make presentations include Barbara Stafford, Professor of Art History, University of Chicago; Jim Kaler, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy University of Illinois; John Carswell, formerly curator of Islamic art at the Oriental Institute and Sotheby's; Donna Cox, Professor of Art and Design, University of Illinois; Mary Quinlan–McGrath, Professor of Art History, Northern Illinois University; Michael Shank, Professor of the History of Science, University of Wisconsin Madison. INSAP V is dedicated to the memory of one of its founders and strong supporters, Ray White Jr.

    Astronomical Symbols Primer
return to main index The depiction of deities and celestial events on coinage as propaganda devices to reflect divine right to a throne was used from the earliest ancient coins through the middle ages. The heavens were not only a mystical force to ancient and medieval peoples, but also the natural order of the universe. The heavens declared what was to happen, and man only played out the story. Comets, eclipses, and close gatherings of planets explained the present and foretold the future. Everyone from the smallest child to the mightiest warrior could witness these celestial events, and rulers were quick to order their die engravers to capitalize on these omens. Stars were signs of physical processes and events, such as weather and sickness. Eclipses and comets were associated with storms, floods, drought, and earthquakes. Comets, especially those with a long tail, were also taken to influence personal and general disasters, wars, changing kingdoms, and deaths of princes. The following links will take you to an brief introduction on how various celestial bodies and events were depicted on ancient and medieval coins. In "Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins," hundreds of examples are presented that demonstrate that the use of astronomical symbols on coins to depict actual celestial events was more common than a few isolated examples.

    Newgrange
Newgrange was constructed over 5,000 years ago (about 3,200 B.C.), making it older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Newgrange was built during the Neolithic or New Stone Age by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley. Knowth and Dowth are similar mounds that together with Newgrange have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO Archaeologists classified Newgrange as a passage tomb, however Newgrange is now recognised to be much more than a passage tomb. Ancient Temple is a more fitting classification, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance, much as present day cathedrals are places of prestige and worship where dignitaries may be laid to rest. Newgrange is a large kidney shaped mound covering an area of over one acre, retained at the base by 97 kerbstones, some of which are richly decorated with megalithic art. The 19 metre long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. The amount of time and labour invested in construction of Newgrange suggests a well-organized society with specialised groups responsible for different aspects of construction. Newgrange is part of a complex of monuments built along a bend of the River Boyne known collectively as BrĂș na BĂłinne. The other two principal monuments are Knowth (the largest) and Dowth, but throughout the region there are as many as 35 smaller mounds.

    Solar Alignment
The sun's rays shining between the shrines of Tlaloc and Hutzilopochtli atop the Templo Mayor
    into the Temple of Quetzalcoatl,
occured at sunrise on March 21, the equinox.
It is said that the Templo Mayor was reconstructed,
at Moctezuma's behest, as the alignment was slightly twisted. It can be seen from the temple ruins that it is skewed so that it is pointed nearly 7 degrees south of true east to match the sun's path. [1]
The Aztecs were observers of nature in all its cycles: the stars, the passing of the seasons , and the birth and death of plant and animal life. These observations informed many aspects of life-from the creation of the calendars, to the integration of time cycles with the stories of the gods and creation, to structuring of rituals in their proper time and place.
    (More unpredictable astronomical events
were linked to omens and portents. For example,
the comet seen by Moctezuma prior to the Spaniards' arrival was seen as a forewarning of an impending crisis.)

Astronomy Among Ancient Tombs and Relics in Asuka, Japan
By Steve Renshaw and Saori Ihara March, 1997 The Asuka area, south of Nara, is one of the most historically rich in Japan. Whether originating here or due to migration from Kyushu, the Asuka area became the center around which most of Japan united in early centuries of the "Christian Era". Reliable historical evidence indicates that exchanges between scholars of classic Chinese principles and the more aristocratic members of the Japanese court occurred as early as the mid 6th century. These exchanges not only gave rise to the infusion of technology, religion, and other aspects of Chinese culture, but astronomical calendar reckoning, astrology, and divination as well. Unlike Kyoto and Nara, most of the towns in the Asuka area are rather small. There are many hills and small mountains with farms and assorted orchards mixed between. Among these, a visitor may find both remains of and intact kofun (tombs) of emperors and noblemen atop hills or high plateaus. From the perspective of archaeoastronomy, one of the most interesting of these is Takamatsu Zuka Kofun . While the exact date of construction is unknown, this tomb (discovered in 1972) provides one of the earliest and most interesting and definitive examples of Chinese/Korean astronomical influence on Japan in the 7th century.
