Archaeology
Archaeology is the study of the human past through investigation of material traces (artifacts, food remains, features, structures, etc.) and their relationships in space and time. Drawing on a wide range of explanatory theory and rigorous methodologies, we use archaeological records of past activities to better understand human technological, economic, social, and cultural evolution from the deep past (Lower Paleolithic) to recent centuries. In doing so, we share many intellectual, theoretical, and methodological interests with our colleagues in other sub-disciplines of anthropology and around the UW campus. Our archaeology faculty has multiple affiliations with the environmental anthropology program, the Quaternary Science Center, and the Burke Museum . In addition, we collaborate with a much broader array of researchers across campus and beyond e.g., Material Science Geology Geography Physics ... Oceanography . These connections are critical for maintaining and increasing the range of tools and collaborations vital to increased resolution of archaeological problems. Despite this diversity, archaeology remains integral as a subunit within anthropology, and it is our focus on the temporal dimension of human diversity through the study of artifacts (broadly defined) that unites us.

The Aerial Archaeology Research Group ( AARG ) provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information for all those actively involved in aerial photography, photo interpretation, field archaeology and landscape history.
This also includes the use of aerial photography in defining preservation policies for archaeological sites and landscapes. Since its foundation in 1980, AARG has actively encouraged such exchange through its annual conference, specialist meetings and, more recently, through the biannual publication of its newsletter, AARG news. AARG is a registered charity: number SC 023162.

64. Technology In Archaeology
Brief introduction to the uses of imaging radar in archaeology.
http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/archaeology/archtechnology/imaging_radar.html
Explanation Imaging Radar allows scientists to do aerial mapping of areas that were difficult to map previously, due to heavy forests or dense cloud coverage. Imaging radar uses multispectral radar frequencies sent from something such as a space shuttle or satellite. The radar illuminates Earth with microwaves allowing detailed observations at any time, regardless of weather or sunlight conditions. Imaging radar can also penetrate thin layers of sand, allowing things to be viewed that can not normally be seen with the naked eye. Uses in Archaeology The ability to see through thin layers of sand, up to 2 meters, has been important to archaeology. It allows archaeologists to know the location of sites in desert areas before they start excavating. The Lost City of Ubar is an example of a site that was found through imaging radar. Using imaging radar, an additional section of the Great Wall of China was also found buried under dirt and sand. As Imaging radar can also penetrate through heavy vegetation, such as tropical forests, it is also helpful in finding sites such as Angkor in Cambodia. Imaging radar from the Sahara desert showed that the area was once covered with lakes and rivers, and had an environment similar to that of Europe's. This has led to excavations along the river beds which yielded numerous paleolithic artifacts and tools.

“In every instance where the findings of archaeology pertain to the Biblical record, the archaeological evidence confirms, sometimes in detailed fashion, the historical accuracy of Scripture. In those instances where the archaeological findings seem to be at variance with the Bible, the discrepancy lies with the archaeological evidence, i.e., improper interpretation, lack of evidence, etc.—not with the Bible.”
—Dr. Bryant C. Wood, archaeologist, Associates for Biblical Research What is the most important archaeological work currently going on in terms of evidence for the truth of God's Word? At Tell el-Dab'a, ancient Ramesses, the eastern delta of Egypt, evidence is being recovered that relates to the Sojourn and Exodus—Events in Israelite history largely written off as legend by today's critical scholars.

Archaeology
In 1634, St. Mary's City was established near the serene junction of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. For 61 years, this first city in Maryland served as the colony's capital. When, in 1695, the seat of government was moved to Annapolis, the town was virtually abandoned and left to crumble into the soil. For 300 years, the fragile remains of the town lay concealed beneath fields of tobacco, corn and wheat. Agriculture protected the archaeological treasure and preserved an unparalleled resource for the study of Early America. The National Park Service has recognized St. Mary's City as "probably the most intact 17th-century English town surviving in our nation…represented entirely by archaeological resources." St. Mary's City offers a rare opportunity for researchers to coax information about the Maryland colony and people's lives from a priceless archaeological record.
The archaeology program at Historic St. Mary's City has been ongoing since 1971, when the museum hired its first staff archaeologist. Researchers have recorded over three hundred archaeological sites in the 30% of the National Landmark investigated thus far.
In 1990, three rare seventeenth-century lead coffins were found inside the ruins of a ca.1667 brick chapel. HSMC assembled an interdisciplinary team to recover the unique information the coffins held. These efforts, coupled with ongoing laboratory analysis and excavation of other graves in the chapel cemetery, have enabled the museum to make a major contribution to the existing knowledge about life and death in the colonial Chesapeake. The Chapel is being reconstructed on its original foundations and adjacent exhibits will help tell the significant story of early Maryland, the birthplace of religious freedom in America.

Heat brought instant death in Pompeii
The people of Pompeii who died when Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago were killed by intense heat rather than suffocation, according to a new study. The temperatures would have killed fleeing people in just 10 seconds, according to the volcanologists and anthropologists from Naples, the city overshadowed by the volcano.
