They are also ecologically diverse predators herbivores , and there are even symbiotic and parasitic forms. Despite this unbelievable diversity, the basic body plan of arthropods is fairly constant. The arthropods constitute the most successful and diverse form of life on Earth, constituting millions of species in a diverse range of habitats, and varying in size from microscopic to quite large. The name "arthropod" comes from the Greek, arthros jointed, and podes , feet. Hence, jointed feet. All arthropods possess a jointed rigid exoskeleton, which both supports the musculature and protects the animal. The exoskeleton is formed by the cuticle, a protective layer composed mostly of chitin, long chained molecules of the sugar acetyl glucosamine, which when cross-linked form tough fibers embedded in a protein matrix As the animal grows it has to shed its exoskeleton at regular intervals, a process known as molting . During this time it is vulnerable to predators and disease, and also to desiccation if it is a terrestrial form like an insect or spider. Because the larger the animal the longer it takes for the new molt to harden, and hence the longer the time it is vulnerable, this process imposes limits on the size arthropods grow to. Another limit with terrestrial forms like insects is that breathing is through pores in the side of the body. Hence arthropods are mostly small, even microscopic, with very few growing to giant size. Science fiction giant ants and the rest are simply physiologically impossible (though that never stopped sci fi writers in the past).

Arthropods - Phylum Arthropoda. zSB(3,3) The Phylum Arthropoda includes invertebrates such as insects , spiders, crustaceans, scorpions, and centipedes. Arthropods are a highly successful group of animals. They evolved more than 500 million years ago and are still going strong. They have colonized a vast variety of ecological niches around the globe and have evolved into a multitude of forms. The Phylum Arthropoda is highly diverse. It is the largest of all animal phylums and accounts for over three quarters of all currently known living and fossil organisms. The exact number of living arthropod species is unknown since many have yet to be identified, especially those inhabiting tropical rainforests. There are five main characteristics all arthropods share. These include:

      Arthropoda
Arthropoda u d u key [Gr.,=jointed feet], largest and most diverse animal phylum. The arthropods include crustaceans insects centipedes millipedes , symphylans, pauropodans, and the extinct trilobites . Arthropods are characterized by a segmented body covered by a jointed external skeleton (exoskeleton), with paired jointed appendages on each segment; a complex nervous system with a dorsal brain, connective nerves passing around the anterior end of the digestive tract, and a ventral nerve cord with a ganglion in each body segment; an open circulatory system with a dorsal heart into which blood flows through paired openings (ostia); and a greatly reduced body cavity (coelom). Because the jointed exoskeleton blocks growth of the organism, it must be shed periodically. This phenomenon, called molting, or ecdysis, is a characteristic feature of the phylum; it permits rapid growth in size and significant change in body form until the new exoskeleton, secreted by the animal, has hardened. Arthropods are mainly terrestrial, but aquatic representatives are well known. There are three subphyla, comprising nine classes. Sections in this article: The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

THE ARTHROPODA - SHRIMP, CRABS, SPIDERS INSECTS, ET AL.
Arthropoda means jointed leg, and refers to the jointed chitinous exoskeleton that is the hallmark of the most diverse phylum, with over 500,000 species. The Phylum Arthropoda consists three great groups: 1) the Superclass Crustacea, which includes shrimp, lobsters, isopods, and many other classes; 2) the Superclass Unirami, which includes the millipedes (and relatives, and the insects; and 3) the Chelicerata, which includes the horseshoe crabs, the scorpions, and the spiders, among others. The Crustacea are mostly aquatic, the Unirami mostly terrestrial, and the Chelicerata, is split between marine and terrestrial forms. Above, is Ligia occidentalis , the rock isopod, or "cucarachas del mar". It is an active scavenger on rocky beaches and be disquietingly abundant. It is also quite large reaching in excess of 10 cm. It is especially densely populous along the sea wall at Puerto Penasco. Apparently, although acting fully terrestrial, they cool by evaporation and must replenish there fluids from the sea. Curiously they often seem to migrate endlessly in one direction along the sea wall, but they must turn around some time. They also exhibit a marked diurnal color cycle, light colored during the night, as above, and dark during the day.

    Systematics of the Arthropoda
Move deeper into the systematics of arthropod groups by selecting one of the boxes containing a picture! A rthropods have traditionally been divided into four classes: Trilobita Chelicerata , Crustacea, and Uniramia . Most living and post-Cambrian fossil arthropods fall into one of these four classes. However, a number of arthropod fossils from the Cambrian Period have been described which do not obviously belong in any of these classes. Many of these arthropods have been found in the famous Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale , in the Canadian Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. Other "weird wonder" arthropods have been found in China, Australia, Russia, Poland, and the USA. (See Gould, 1989, for an overview.) Recent work (Wills et al. 1994) has shown that these arthropods are mostly in "stem clades"- that is, they are extinct relatives of living arthropods that lack some of the characters that typify groups with living members. The cladogram we present here is thus something of an oversimplification. Debate as to which living phyla are the closest relatives of arthropods continues to rage. Arthropods were once considered to be close relatives of

Look and you will find an undiscovered world in your own backyard. I can find a bug I've never seen before almost every time I go outdoors. So can you! The world is a very interesting place where as few as 10% of organisms are even named. Behaviors specific to each species and interactions among various organisms within environments form ecosystems more complex than the sum total of all potential human imagination. Nature is a perfect system where even synthetic materials are eventually reabsorbed.
I encourage all parents and children to consider keeping a live insect or spider as a pet. Life cycles of many insects are completely unlike human, dog or cat experiences where small hairy animals grow into big hairy animals. Consider the miraculous transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly. The metamorphosis defies comprehension. Sure, feed a dog and it will grow as big as a ten year old human child, but never learn to use the toilet. If you enjoy carrying a plastic bag in your pocket while you go on a walk in the cold rain six months out of the year so your dog can leave a big steaming pile in the neighbor's front yard, that's your choice to make. Not how I choose to keep my hands warm on a cold day, though! And when man's best friend enters the house with muddy feet and wet coat, runs across the carpet while simultaneously shaking wet dog smell through the house, wellthat's just gross!
