John McCarthy , who coined the term in 1956, defines it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines." The field was founded on the claim that a central property of humans, intelligence—the sapience of Homo sapiens —can be so precisely described that it can be simulated by a machine. This raises philosophical issues about the nature of the mind and the limits of scientific inquiry , issues which have been addressed by myth fiction and philosophy since antiquity. Artificial intelligence has been the subject of optimism

The modern definition of artificial intelligence (or AI) is "the study and design of intelligent agents" where an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions which maximizes its chances of success. See also: John McCarthy, who coined the term in 1956, defines it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines." Other names for the field have been proposed, such as computational intelligence, synthetic intelligence or computational rationality. The term artificial intelligence is also used to describe a property of machines or programs: the intelligence that the system demonstrates. AI research uses tools and insights from many fields, including computer science, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, cognitive science, linguistics, operations research, economics, control theory, probability, optimization and logic. AI research also overlaps with tasks such as robotics, control systems, scheduling, data mining, logistics, speech recognition, facial recognition and many others. Computational intelligence Computational intelligence involves iterative development or learning (e.g., parameter tuning in connectionist systems).

Herbert Simon's book The Sciences of the Artificial is always on the list I give them. However, there is not a commonly accepted definition of what it would mean for a machine to be truly "intelligent." More broadly, AI is a field of science and engineering involved with the study, design and manufacture of systems that exhibit behavior that is reactive to conditions within the surrounding environment, adaptive toward the accomplishment of system goals, autonomous to varying degrees, and complex in breadth or scope. As the field progresses the context and expectations for the extent of reactiveness, adaptiveness, autonomy and complexity of the systems has grown. Artificial Intelligence has been described as a "broad sub-field within computer science " by many authors. Certainly

    artificial intelligence
The branch of computer science concerned with making computers behave like humans. The term was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Artificial intelligence includes
  • games playing: programming computers to play games such as chess and checkers
  • expert systems programming computers to make decisions in real-life situations (for example, some expert systems help doctors diagnose diseases based on symptoms)
  • natural language programming computers to understand natural human languages
  • neural networks Systems that simulate intelligence by attempting to reproduce the types of physical connections that occur in animal brains
  • robotics programming computers to see and hear and react to other sensory stimuli Currently, no computers exhibit full artificial intelligence (that is, are able to simulate human behavior). The greatest advances have occurred in the field of games playing. The best computer chess programs are now capable of beating humans. In May, 1997, an IBM super-computer called Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Gary Kasparov in a chess match.

John McCarthy coined the term to mean "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines." Research in AI is concerned with producing machines to automate tasks requiring intelligent behavior. Examples include control systems; automated planning and scheduling; the ability to answer diagnostic and consumer questions; and handwriting, speech, and facial recognition. As such, it has become an engineering discipline, focused on providing solutions to real-life problems, software applications, traditional strategy games like computer chess, and various video games Artificial intelligence is being used today for many different purposes and all throughout the world. It can create safer environments for workers by using robots for dangerous situations. In the future, it may be used more for human interaction; for example, an automated teller would actually be able to do visual recognition and respond to one personally.

For information about all MaineSAIL projects, see our projects page The lab, which was originally created in 1989 (as the Cooperative Distributed Problem Solving Research Group) at the University of New Hampshire, was created in large part to involve students in research. This continues to be a strong focus of the lab now. In addition to graduate students, the lab provides research experience for undergraduates doing senior or honors projects, Work Merit experience, independent study projects, and, when funding permits, paid work as research assistants. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage on behaviors that humans consider intelligent. The ability to create intelligent machines has intrigued humans since ancient times, and today with the advent of the computer and 50 years of research into AI programming techniques, the dream of smart machines is becoming a reality. Researchers are creating systems which can mimic human thought, understand speech, beat the best human chessplayer, and countless other feats never before possible. Find out how the military is applying AI logic to its hi-tech systems, and how in the near future Artificial Intelligence may impact our lives.
It is not my aim to suprise or shock youbut the simplest way I can summarize is to say that there are now in the world machines that can think, that can learn and that can create. Moreover, their ability to do these things is going to increase rapidly untilin a visible futurethe range of problems they can handle will be coextensive with the range to which the human mind has been applied.
