"There is scarcely a research in nuclear physics which does not use his work, directly or indirectly, and usually many times over." G.P. Thomson On 1st September 1877 Francis William Aston was born at Harborne, a few miles from Birmingham. He was the third child in a family of seven, and enjoyed playing with mechanical toys in his youth. Aston was first educated at Harborne Vicarage School, but began to study science at Malvern College, where he demonstrated his ability in chemistry, physics and mathematics. Aston was at Malvern for two years before entering Mason College, Birmingham, in 1893. At Mason College, Aston was taught chemistry by Tilden and Frankland, and physics by Poynting. In 1898 he was awarded the Forster Scholarship and worked in collaboration with Frankland to publish his first paper in 1901. In 1908 Aston's father died, leaving Aston enough money to travel around the world. The following year Professor J.J. Thomson invited Aston to move to the Cavendish Laboratory and work as Thomson's assistant. Aston had been recommended to Thomson by his former teacher Poynting, and was happy to accept the Cambridge post which would leave him more time for research. Since his discovery of the electron Thomson had been analysing positive rays, and had developed a method of measuring atomic weights by using combinations of magnetics and electric fields to produce curves on a photographic plate. Aston helped to further refine these experiments.

In 1894, Aston attended Birmingham University to study chemistry and physics. Aston won the Forster Scholarship in 1898, allowing him to conduct research that was published in 1901. He began working as an assistant at Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge in 1909 and conducted research on positive rays. Aston remained at Cavendish until1914 when World War I required his skills at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. After World War I ended, Aston returned to his studies at Cavendish, now focusing on isotopes. In 1919, Aston made his most significant contribution to atomic science with the Printer Friendly

invention of the mass spectrograph. The device was capable of separating isotopes by measuring the minute differences in their masses. Using the mass spectrograph, Aston successfully identified 212 existing isotopes. The invention also prompted him to devise his famous Whole Number Rule which states, "the mass of the oxygen isotope being defined, all the other isotopes have masses that are very nearly whole numbers." The rule became crucial to future developments in nuclear energy technology.

ASTON FRANCIS WILLIAM
Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists British chemist and physicist (1877–1945) Aston was born in Harborne, England, the son of a metal merchant. He was educated at Mason College, the forerunner of Birmingham University, where he studied chemistry. From 1898 until 1900 he did research under P. F. Frankland on optical rotation. He left Birmingham in 1900 to work in a Wolverhampton brewery for three years. During this time he continued with scientific research in a home laboratory, where he worked on the production of vacua for x-ray discharge tubes. This work came to the notice of J. H. Poynting of the University of Birmingham who invited Aston to work with him. He remained at Birmingham until 1910 when he moved to Cambridge as research assistant to J. J. Thomson. He became a research fellow at Cambridge in 1920 and stayed there for the rest of his life, apart from the war years spent at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. Aston's main work, for which he received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1922, was on the design and use of the mass spectrograph , which was used to clear up several outstanding problems and became one of the basic tools of the new atomic physics.

Director of the Trinity test Kenneth Tompkins Bainbridge (July 27, 1904 – July 14, 1996) was a physicist at Harvard University who did work on cyclotron research. His precise measurements of mass differences between nuclear isotopes allowed him to confirm Albert Einstein's mass-energy equivalence concept. He was the Director of the Trinity test of the Manhattan Project , which took place July 16, 1945. Bainbridge called the Trinity explosion a "foul and awesome display" and remarked to J. Robert Oppenheimer immediately after the test, "Now we are all sons of bitches." This marked the beginning of his dedication to ending the testing of nuclear weapons and to efforts to maintain civilian control of future developments in that field.

    Death:

    Claim to Fame:
Aston was a British chemist and physicist who was awarded the 1922 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his invention of the mass spectrometer and the discovery of isotopes of non-radioactive elements. Mass spectrometers separate ions by mass by accelerating them through a magnetic field. The charged particles will curve through the magnetic field and the more massive the charged particle, the less its path will bend.
Aston used his device to identify 212 natural isotopes and formulated a Whole Number Rule. The rule states the mass of oxygen isotope is defined at 16, all other isotopes will have masses equal to whole numbers.
