“Follow the Elements”
Astrobiology at Arizona State University Blog Summary Widget Welcome!
The Astrobiology Team at ASU “follows the elements” to help guide the exploration for life beyond Earth, in our Solar System and on planets orbiting other stars. We are one of fourteen teams that make up the NASA Astrobiology Institute , supported by a five year grant that began in 2009.
Our research is motivated by a simple observation: that life-as-we-know-it uses a non-random selection of the chemical elements. This observation prompts many questions:
  • What are the rules that govern the selection of these “bioessential” elements?
How might these elements differ in extreme environments on Earth or beyond?
How common are the bioessential elements in the extraterrestrial environments that might harbor life?
How are the distributions of these elements in the cosmos shaped by astrophysical processes?
  • We aspire to answer these questions through laboratory studies, field research and computational modeling. The answers will shape future exploration strategies.
To reach these goals we are training the astrobiology explorers of tomorrow, integrating multiple disciplines, degree programs and academic units at ASU and at collaborating institutions. Explore this site to learn more...

The New Science of Astrobiology : From Genesis of the Living Cell to Evolution of Intelligent Behavior in the Universe by Julián Chela-Flores (Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht) ( Publisher link The New Science of Astrobiology : - From Genesis of the Living Cell to Evolution of Intelligent The New Science of Astrobiology accessible to a wide readership: scientists, humanists, and the general reader will have an opportunity to participate in one of the most rewarding activities of contemporary culture. Easy to read the volume is especially vivid in its general description of scientific observation and theory showing clearly the interdisciplinary nature of this science as well as its preliminary results. Author Summary: The initial work for this book began in 1996. It was intended as a set of notes for a lecture to which I was kindly invited by the international School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola" (Varenna, Lake Como, Italy). On that occasion the School chose the topic: "Reflections on the Birth of the Universe: Science, Philosophy and Theology. The 43 pages of the Varenna lecture were subsequently considerably modified thanks to the kind invitation of the directors of the third volume of the series on Scientific Perspectives on Divine Action, which dealt with the subject of "Evolutionary and Molecular Biology: Scientific Perspectives on Divine Action"'. That activity was co‑sponsored by the Vatican Observatory, Vatican City State, and the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences in Berkeley, California. The book was published in 1998. In the following three years I have endeavored to extend the scope of my presentation of the new science of astrobiology.

PHY 580 - ASTROBIOLOGY FOR TEACHERS COURSE OVERVIEW Course Description: Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the universe. It uses interdisciplinary science at the intersection of biology, geology and physics to discover where and under what conditions life can arise and exist in the universe. The two main goals of this course are:
  • To provide information on the central concepts related to the field of Astrobiology, and To provide experiences with using and creating student-centered and inquiry-based curriculum materials for teaching astrobiology that are aligned with the National Science Education Standards.
  • NASA Astrobiology Roadmap The NASA Astrobiology Roadmap is the product of the efforts of more than 150 scientists and technologists, spanning a broad range of disciplines. Astrobiology is the study of life in the universe. It provides a biological perspective to many areas of NASA research, linking such endeavors as the search for habitable planets, exploration missions to Mars and Europa, efforts to understand the origin of life, and planning for the future of life beyond Earth. Astrobiology addresses three basic questions, which have been asked in some form for generations. Astrobiology is exciting today because we have the technology to begin to answer these fundamental questions:

Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. This multidisciplinary field encompasses the search for habitable environments in our Solar System and habitable planets outside our Solar System, the search for evidence of prebiotic chemistry and life on Mars and other bodies in our Solar System, laboratory and field research into the origins and early evolution of life on Earth, and studies of the potential for life to adapt to challenges on Earth and in space.

Astrobiology is a cross-cutting theme in all of NASA’s space science endeavors, knitting together research in Astrophysics Earth Science , and Heliophysics as well as Planetary Science . NASA’s Astrobiology Roadmap, prepared in consultation with the scientific community, outlines multiple pathways for research and exploration and indicates how they might be prioritized and coordinated. The Astrobiology Program also solicits advice from the Space Studies Board of the National Research Council.

    BIOPHYSICS

Before we proceed to the matter of exobiology, we must know some biophysical concepts which are important for the comprehension of the exobiology. Let us start with the operational definition of life: From the viewpoint of Biophysics, life is a delay of the spontaneous diffusion or dispersion of the internal energy of the biomolecules towards more potential microstates. An operational definition is generally designed to model a conceptual definition, to be precise, by using words and concepts to describe a variable. Phase Space is the space at which all the possible states of a system are represented. The phase space is produced by the general positions and their corresponding conjugated moments. A conjugated moment derives from the difference between the kinetic energy and the potential energy in relation to an integral coordinate.

LCROSS IMPACT YIELDS TREASURE TROVE October 28, 2010 Six peer-reviewed scientific papers in the October 22 issue of SCIENCE represented initial analysis of results from the LCROSS lunar impact one year ago. Colaprete et al report that in the permanently shadowed region of Cabeus crater near the south lunar pole, water was detected at levels of 5.6 percent, with an uncertainty of 2.9 percent. LCROSS also detected methane, ammonia, hydrogen gas, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sodium and mercury. Bombardment of the lunar surface by comets and meteoroids could have delivered some of these volatiles and minerals. Additional details about the LCROSS findings, along with complementary observations from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, can be found at

Astrobiology Revised: March 2010 "Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.", Bill Watterson, The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes Is our Earth the only world that supports life? The scientific question of life on other worlds literally stretches back to the Renaissance, when Johannes Kepler, best known in astronomy for his trio of laws that define the paths of moons and planets, decided to unwind a little by writing a book called A Dream , in which he describes the inhabitants of the Moon, whose surface had just been revealed by Galileo. In spite of hopes, fears, and thousands of pages of science fiction, this mystery has never been truly solved, although tantalizing hints have surfaced as the years have passed:
    • Organic compounds like methane are in the atmospheres of the giant planets of the outer solar system and of one of Saturn's moons, Titan. They are also found in comets, meteorites, and nebulae, the clouds of gas and dust from which stars and planets are formed. Simple forms of life can survive exposure to very harsh conditions. For instance, bacteria were found to have survived two years on the Moon in parts of Surveyor III which were brought back to Earth by the crew of Apollo 12.

    Astrobiology
Is there life outside of Earth? Is there a future for humankind in outer space? These are but a few among the many questions that this field of science attempts to answer. Exobiology (also Astrobiology) is an interdisciplinary field that combines astronomy, biology and geology to study the origins, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe. Thus, it is concerned with how life began, the search for extraterrestrial life, the effects of outer space on living organisms, the future of the Earth, and the possible habitability elsewhere in the universe .
