Astronomy
(From Greek astron , star; nemein , to distribute). A science of prehistoric antiquity, originating in the elementary needs of mankind . It is divided into two main branches, distinguished as astrometry and astrophysics ; the former concerned with determining the places of the investigation of the heavenly bodies, the latter, with the investigation of their chemical and physical nature . But the division is of a quite recent date . The possibilities of antique science stopped short at fixing the apparent positions of the objects on the sphere. Nor was any attempt made to rationalize the observed facts until Greeks laboriously built up a speculative system, which was finally displaced by vast fabric of gravitational theory. Descriptive astronomy, meanwhile took its rise from the invention of the telescope, and the facilities thus afforded for the close scrutiny of the denizens of the sky; while practical astronomy gained continually in refinement with the improvement of optical and mechanical arts. At the present time, astrophysics may be said to have absorbed descriptive astronomy, and

Where Amateur Astronomy Resides
An open letter to the editor of the Prairie Astronomer from Kevin Koutnik
[This letter has been included in our web page because if the timeless nature of the thoughts that reside within it. (originally published in the Prairie Astronomer in December 1992)] I just got my new telescope no too long ago and am still discovering all sorts of things that I knew existed but also knew that I would never be able to see with only my binoculars at my disposal. When I first got my Celestron Special Edition Ultima 8 I was pretty guarded about the whole thing. Oh, I have a friend, also a member of the club whom I generally share my observations with. He has a Mead LX-6 10" SCT and we've been comparing sights between the two scopes. He pulls down a few more stars than I and can probably find a few more galaxies and planetaries than I, but for all intents and purposes, we can reach nearly the same objects to suit our amateur desires. Being members of a fairly good-sized and active club has helped our hobbies along marvelously. The people in our club are always helpful in providing assistance when some problem arises during a session, and all provide a unique form of friendship that one only finds when appreciating something as universal as amateur astronomy.

    Requirements
  • Describe the proper clothing and other precautions for safely making observations at night and in cold weather. Tell how to safely observe the Sun, objects near the Sun, and the Moon. Explain first aid for injuries or illnesses such as heat and cold reactions, dehydration, bites and stings, and damage to your eyes that could occur during observation. Explain what light pollution is and how it and air pollution affect astronomy. With the aid of diagrams (or real telescopes if available), do each of the following:
Explain why binoculars and telescopes are important astronomical tools. Demonstrate or explain how these tools are used. Describe the similarities and differences of several types of astronomical telescopes.

Welcome to the ASCOM Initiative
This is the home of the ASCOM Initiative, a loosely-knit group of astronomy software developers and astronomy device manufacturers devoted to vendor-independent plug-and-play control. ASCOM is a many-to-many and language-independent architecture, supported by most astronomy devices which connect to computers. The diagram below shows how ASCOM differs from traditional astronomy instrument control architectures. For more information on the ASCOM Initiative, see the About ASCOM section.
ASCOM Platform 5
Required for all drivers . After installing, please apply the Platform 5.5 Update Windows 2000 users only , install the ASCOM Platform 4.1 . You will have very old drivers and you'll be unable to update most of them.
Download and install the driver(s) for your astronomy instruments and devices. You'll also find plug-ins for TheSky and other useful tools and components here for download.

Astronomy
From LoveToKnow 1911
ASTRONOMY (from Gr. eturpov, a star , and to classify or arrange). The subject matter of astronomical science, considered in its widest range, comprehends all the matter of the universe which lies outside the limit of the earth's atmosphere . The seeming anomaly of classifying as a single branch of science all that we know in a field so wide, while subdividing our knowledge of things on our own planet into an indefinite number of separate sciences, finds its explanation in the impossibility of subjecting the matter of the heavens to that experimental scrutiny which yields such rich results when applied to matter which we can handle at will. Astronomy is of necessity a science of observation in the pursuit of which experiment can directly play no part. It is the most ancient of the sciences because, before the era of experiment, it was the branch of knowledge which could be most easily systematized, while the relations of its phenomena to day and night, times and seasons, made some knowledge of the subject a necessity of social life. In recent times it is among the more progressive of the sciences, because the new and improved methods of research now at command have found in its cultivation a field of practically unlimited extent, in which the lines of research may ultimately lead to a comprehension of the universe impossible of attainment before our time.
