Socorro, New Mexico
Socorro, New Mexico, is the home of NRAO operations in New Mexico. Located on the campus of New Mexico Tech , the Array Operations Center houses scientific, engineering, technical, computer and support staff for both the Very Large Array and the Very Long Baseline Array. It includes the control center and correlator for VLBA observations and provides space for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array project. The Very Large Array (VLA) , one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin 80 km (50 miles) miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (426.5 feet) in diameter.

5.2 Meter Radio Astronomy Project for 1420 MHz
This is a description of my 1420 MHz radio telescope project for observing the natural radio emissions of neutral hydrogen atoms found throughout space. Specifically, the study of the radio spectra of these emissions is used to determine the distribution and dynamics of hydrogen throughout our galaxy.
Hello, Everyone!
I have been interested in radio astronomy for years but have only recently been able to find the time to assemble my own radio telescope. I have completed construction of a 5.2 meter antenna which I use to detect the 1420 Mhz radio emissions of neutral hydrogen found throughout the galaxy. I have included some information on construction and sources of material, and there is also a description of how I am using it and what type of information can be gained from these types of observations. It is my hope that this information will be helpful to others who are interested in radio astronomy or who may even be considering a project of their own. The antenna has a computer controlled Az-El mount and was built mostly from recycled C-band satellite TV components. The elevation drive was once a horizon-to-horizon drive for a 16-foot satellite TV antenna and has an integral worm drive. It is driven by a 90-vdc linear actuator motor/gearbox. The azimuth drive is a roller-chain arrangement driven by another worm drive. This worm drive is also driven by a linear actuator motor/gearbox. The antenna uses a potentiometer for azimuth position feedback which produces a voltage ratio read by a "data acquisition" board on an old 286 PC. Elevation position is obtained by using a

IISc AMATEUR ASTRONOMY CLUB
The Amateur Astronomy Club of IISc was started late 1997. Membership is open to all students and faculty of IISc. As of now, what we do is meet on the Raman Building rooftop at night to look at the stars, as opposed to talking about black holes and the big bang ! We have more than a hundred members so far of which some are listed ( rest will be put up soon...) We have a lot of activities planned, subject to sky conditions. As the club is fairly small, we shall take it as it goes, but suggestions are more than welcome. Putting a figure of a man digging the earth would be trite, but of course, this page is very much under construction.

Clear Sky Clock - Tucson I am a deep sky fanatic (a geek, as those who know me often say), especially galaxies and nebulae, but I also like to look at the planets and the Moon. I haven't really been too interested in comets, variable stars, etc. but try to keep an open mind as I may travel that path in the future. I've logged all of Messier's 110 (109), many from midtown Tucson, AZ using a 6" reflector and have completed a Messier Marathon using a 20" Obsession reflector. I had originally planned to capture images of all of the Messier objects using the 20" and an SBIG ST-237 CCD camera, but I never got around to that - mainly because I had a hard time not using the 20" for visual observing. Now, I no longer have the 20" Obsession, having sold it in order to purchase a 25" Obsession. I received the 25" primary from Galaxy Optics on January 7, 2003 and received the 25" Obsession telescope on January 8, 2003. I've tried to go out viewing with the new scope every new moon since. If I have but one word to describe the 25" Obsession: Awesome.

Binocular Basics By Chuck Hawks
Binoculars are one of the handiest and most widespread of all optical instruments. Virtually anyone who spends much time outdoors owns (or should own) a pair of binoculars. They are almost a necessity for the astronomer, hunter, saltwater fisherman, boater, sports fan, and experienced traveler. This article is intended to help the person who needs some basic information about binoculars. I hope to explain the specifications and terms commonly associated with binoculars. For those needing a more in-depth study of the subject, I recommend the excellent little book How To Choose Binoculars by Alan Hale. Perhaps the first thing to understand is that binoculars are really just two small telescopes mechanically linked together. All of the facts and formulas that help you to understand telescopes also pertain to binoculars. (You will find telescope information on my ) Each side of a pair of binoculars has a prime focal length, an objective lens, an ocular (eyepiece), an exit pupil, and so forth. Binoculars are designed to give a correctly oriented, right side up view. This makes them ideal for terrestrial viewing, or for locating astronomical objects in the night sky. A good pair of binoculars is one of the handiest accessories for the astronomer, hunter, sportsman, traveler, birdwatcher, and nature lover. So whether you want to get a better view of the local football game, or find a big buck across a canyon, a good pair of binoculars is often indispensable.
