Many times, the best way to learn about something is to do it. We think the best way to learn about what an astrophysicist does would be to spend a day (or two or three) in the shoes of one. But since we don't have room for everyone who visits our web site to visit our lab, we've tried to do the next best thing. In these web pages, you will be given a real problem in astronomy which you solve by traveling through web pages, exploring different options and learning many different things along the way. Science is a process of inquiry. Scientists propose hypotheses and test them with experiments. In these pages you will begin with several options for experiments that may lead to the answer you are seeking. Scientists go down many paths that turn out to be dead ends. In these pages, you will encounter some dead ends, too. But often a scientist learns much from a "dead end". You will find that is true here as well. As you travel through the pages in the site to answer the question you are given, you will have the chance to read about relevant concepts in astronomy and test your skills with interactive quizzes. You should take the time to take the interactive quizzes. For each one that you successfully complete, you will be given a record at the end of skills and concepts you have learned. You will have the opportunity to take different paths and to try different techniques. Different paths are indicated by buttons as well as descriptions. Some buttons you will encounter (and what you will find there) include:

change History
A long time ago, during the time of the Ancient Greeks , people thought that the way things worked in the sky was different from the way things worked on earth. They also thought that they could not study how things in the sky worked. This was because they could not do experiments with things in the sky, but they could do experiments with things that are on the surface of the Earth When people realized that, by looking at the sky, they were able to work out how the planets moved, the science of astrophysics was born. The first people to write books on how they thought the planets moved were Nicolaus Copernicus Galileo , and Johannes Kepler Sir Isaac Newton realized that the same rules of mechanics that he had found on the surface of the Earth also could be used to predict how the planets moved. He said, "As above, so below." By this, he meant that we can study how things work on this planet to find out how things work in space.

Principles of Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics
Cathie Clarke Fluid dynamical forces drive most of9780521846561 the fundamental processes in the Universe and so play a crucial role in our understanding of astrophysics. This comprehensive textbook introduces the necessary fluid dynamics to understand a wide range of astronomical phenomena, from stellar structures to supernovae blast waves, to accretion discs. The authors' approach is to introduce and derive the fundamental equations, supplemented by text that conveys a more intuitive understanding of the subject, and to emphasise the observable phenomena that rely on fluid dynamical processes. The textbook has been developed for use by final year undergraduate and starting graduate students of astrophysics, and contains over fifty exercises. It is based on the authors' many years of teaching their astrophysical fluid dynamics course at the University of Cambridge. Request Examination Copy Learn more

Over the past several decades, a handful of familiar stars in nearby galaxies have exploded in supernovae. Most of these stars were red supergiants, which matches the theoretical expectation that most supernovae occur when the core of a red supergiant star collapses . By chance, however, the nearest recent supernova was a rarity: an exploding blue supergiant. This was the supernova SN 1987A, and it is the best studied of all supernovae explosions, having occurred in Large Magellanic Cloud, which is a neighboring galaxy to our own Milky Way Galaxy. The basic theory behind core-collapse supernovae is that a massive star exhausts the thermonuclear fuel at its core; without a source of energy to compensate for the energy radiated away by the star, the core is unable to resist the force of gravity, and it collapses. The sudden release of gravitational potential energy as the core collapses to a neutron star blows the outer layers of the star away. These expanding layers emit the light we see in the supernovae. SN 1987A confirmed part of this theory when the neutrinos released during the collapse of the star's core were detected by underground neutrino detectors . Why the star was a blue supergiant rather than a red supergiant, however, is something of a puzzle. The page added with this issue discusses the many unusual characteristics of

edit History
In 1968, the founding year of the journal, it was recognized that an ever-increasing penetration of astronomical observations into space was widening the traditional scope of astrophysics . Developments in space technology, enabling astronomical obser- vations to be made outside the terrestrial atmosphere or magnetosphere, had a profound effect on astrophysics in many respects. Not only are more students were attracted to astrophysics through the traditional channels, but also an increasing number of physicists were embarking on research - both experimental and theoretical - of problems which belonged properly to the domain of astrophysics. A rapid growth of our knowledge arising from all these sources made increasing demands on the media for publication.
