Course Concept and Rationale:
It is not a secret that science is regarded as the most difficult subject by American students, whose knowledge of science, unfortunately, does not meet international standards in most cases. This dangerous situation has not changed much in the last couple of decades, even though many different educational plans and projects have been proposed. The objective of these plans and projects is to change the existing situation of science illiteracy in American schools. Unfortunately, none of the changes in curricula and in the philosophy of science education seem to have produced a lasting solution to this difficult problem. American students still appear to be almost at the bottom of scientific competency, according to the results of science exams given to students in different countries. One of the reasons is that the improvement of the content and methods of science instruction is a complex and continuous process. We should acknowledge that, of all science courses, physics and astronomy are in the worst shape. Only a small number of American high school graduates choose these courses (20% for physics, and less than 2% for astronomy) from among other electives. Most of the students do not recognize and cannot explain simple natural phenomena. "Radiation," "galaxy," "spectrum," "nebula," and other magical words mean nothing to an average student.

It includes rotations and chemistry selection, preparing an overall report file chandra.txt and a smaller report presented to the screen of your terminal. If specified, CHANDRA also generates a detailed center-to-surface structure file for variables like temperature, pressure, density, and so forth. is Principal Investigator (PI) of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), a NASA satellite launched in 2001 and continuing to return the most detailed maps ever made of the tiny fluctuations in the cosmological microwave background. ASTROPHYSICS, the branch of astronomical science which treats of the physical constitution of the heavenly bodies. So long as these bodies could be known to men only as points or disks of light in the sky , no such science was possible. Even later, when the telescope was the only instrument of research, knowledge on this subject was confined to the appearances presented by the planets, supplemented by more or less probable inferences as to the nature of their surfaces. When, in the third quarter of the igth century, spectrum analysis was applied to the light coming to us from the heavenly bodies, a new era in astronomical science was opened up of such importance that the body of knowledge revealed by this method has sometimes been termed the "new astronomy ." The development of the method has been greatly assisted by photography , while the application of photometric measurements has been a powerful auxiliary in the work. It has thus come about that astrophysics owes its recent development, and its recognition as a distinct branch of astronomical science, to the combination of the processes involved in the three arts of spectroscopy , photography and photometry . The most general conclusions reached by this combination may be summed up as follows: The heavenly bodies are composed of like matter with that which we find to make up our globe. The sun and stars are found to contain the more important elements with which chemistry has made us acquainted.

Participants
This long-term program will involve a community of senior and junior researchers. The intent is for long-term participants to have an opportunity to learn about computational astrophysics from the perspectives of many different fieldsmathematics, science and astronomyand to meet a diverse group of people and have an opportunity to form new collaborations. In addition to these activities, there will be opening tutorials, three workshops, and a culminating workshop at Lake Arrowhead. Full and partial support for long-term participants is available, and those interested are encouraged to fill out an online application at the bottom of this page. Support for individual workshops will also be available, and may be applied for through the online application for each workshop. We are especially interested in applicants who are interested in becoming core participants and participating in the entire program (March 7 - June 10, 2005), but give due consideration to applications for shorter periods. Funding for participants is available at all academic levels, though recent PhD's, graduate students, and researchers in the early stages of their career are especially encouraged to apply.
