There are about 1,100 bat species worldwide, which represent about twenty percent of all classified mammal species. About seventy percent of bats are insectivores . Most of the rest are frugivores , or fruit eaters. A few species feed from animals other than insects. Bats are present throughout most of the world and perform vital ecological roles such as

The colony had another successful pupping this year, and all but a few of the bats have left for the winter. Bats are vital to Washington's ecosystems. Although they are one of our most fascinating native mammals, they are probably the least studied and understood. All of our bats are insect eaters, consuming millions, many of which are pests. They find insects and navigate in the dark by "echolocation," a type of radar system. They call out notes, usually far above human range of hearing, and "listen" for the returning echoes that tell them what is front of them. This ability is so refined that they have no trouble "seeing" tiny insects and catching them in total darkness. Washington has 16 of the world's more than 900 species of bats. The most significant threats to bat survival are persecution by humans and loss of habitat. Vandalism and disturbance of roosting caves, maternity colonies, loss of tree snags, and careless use of pesticides all seriously threaten remaining populations.

There are over 900 different species of bats. The smallest bat is the bumblebee bat (with a wingspan of 6 inches=15 cm, weighing less than a penny); the biggest bat is the flying fox bat (with a wingspan of 6 feet=1.8 m, weighing 2 pounds=1 kg). I was travelling back from a wedding in Scotland when my mobile phone rang. "We've got bats in a window" ! I couldn't understand how the bats had got between the panes of glass. As you might be able to see, the window was the old type where there is a single piece of glass in an aluminium frame, and there are two of these that slide past each other virtically, leaving about 15 millimetres between the pieces of glass. This is just the sort of gap a Pipestrelle bat likes, and you've guessed it, there were nearly 60 in there. There were about 20 more in the corridor that this window was at the end of, and you have guessed it again, this was the bedroom block for the troops, they were terrified of the tiny bats !

Bat FAQ
Why would I want to attract bats? Bats are important indicators of a healthy environment. Because they are sensitive to high pollution and pesticide levels, they are useful as a warning sign to potential environmental problems. Also, bats can be important weapons in combating insects that are actually dangerous to humans. A small bat can capture more than 1,200 mosquitoes in a single hour! Also, bats cannot contract the West Nile Virus by eating infected mosquitoes. Besides mosquitoes, bats can help control the populations of beetles, moths, and leafhoppers. Many insects can hear bats up to 100 feet away and will avoid those areas occupied by bats. The effectiveness of bats in some areas diminishes the need for pesticides that can harm both the pests and their natural predators.

Review of the film
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/bats.html
View other movie reviews Find a movie: Bats It seems that a monster-type movie has to be released every couple of months. The plot is simple. There are a group of people, some of whom do not get along. There is some sort of monster. Be it a large alligator in Lake Placid , genetically altered sharks in Deep Blue Sea , or the multitude of other examples present, Hollywood keeps pumping these movies out at a furious rate. Sometime, as in The Relic or Mimic (if you can remember the difference), the movie rises, albeit only a little, above the genre and becomes somewhat enjoyable. More often than not, the movie is a silly exercise you sit through and forget. Bats falls squarely into the latter category. The monsters this time are, surprise, bats. Not just normal bats, but ones from Indonesia, about the size of foxes. Because of some shady experiments performed on them, they are now super smart and bloodthirsty. Bats
Bats are one of a select group of animals who have earned a well-deserved reversal of public opinion. There are more than 40 species of bats found throughout Canada and the United States, all belonging to the order Chiroptera,
Problems and Solutions Typically, conflicts between humans and bats only occur with a few species, including the little brown, big brown, evening, pallid, and free-tailed bats. These species often roost in houses (usually attics), sometimes for years, without being noticed by humans. Occasionally, an individual bat is found inside a house, flying around and landing on curtains or furniture. The rule with any bat encounter is to remain calm and keep pets and children away. Keep as near to a wall as possible when moving around the room. Close interior doors and provide the bat with an exit by opening an outside door or window. Leather (not cotton) work gloves are adequate protection from a bat's teeth and will allow a person to safely and gently pick up a bat and release him outside, out of harm's way. Be prepared for the bat to vocalize loudly when he is picked up.

Bats
By Taylor Bats are the only mammals that can fly. They have a fur covered body, and wings that are covered with smooth skin. The scientific name for bats is Chiroptera , a Greek word which means hand-wing. There are two main kinds of bats in the world. Megabats eat fruit and plants and can have a wing span up to six feet. Microbats are insect eaters and can weigh less than a penny. Animal Communication Most bats use echolocation (ek-o-lo-ka-shun) when hunting for food and to find their way in complete darkness. Sound waves come out of a bat's mouth or nose. Here is what it sounds like when a bat is using echolocation Some bats have a growth around their nose which is used like a megaphone. When the sound waves hit the object, an echo comes back to the bat. The bat then interprets the echo to determine the object's shape, size, and even texture. Bats also use sound to help them find food and avoid flying into things in the dark.
