Easier - Bats are the only mammals that fly. They have furry bodies and thin, leathery wings. Bats hang upside down when they are resting. Bats sleep during the day and come out at night to feed. Bats find their way by making high-pitched squeaks and clicks. The echoes of these noises are picked up by sensitive ears and used to guide them around. Harder - Bats dwell in caves, attics, crevices, or other sheltered places. A few species live in trees. Bats seem uncommon because they roost in dark habitats and come out only at night; therefore, they are rarely seen. Night creatures are called nocturnal. Over 900 species of bats live in all parts of the world except Antarctica and the Arctic. Most bats are found in the tropic regions, where they can find food the year around. About 40 species of bats live in Canada and the United States.

Diversity
Bats are the second-most speciose group of mammals , after rodents . The approximately 925 species of living bats make up around 20% of all known living mammal species. In some tropical areas, there are more species of bats than of all other kinds of mammals combined. Hill and Smith, 1984 Nowak, 1991 Vaughan, Ryan, and Czaplewski, 2000 Bats are often divided into two major groups, usually given the rank of suborders, Megachiroptera and Microchiroptera. Although these groups probably do not represent monophyletic lineages (discussed in more detail below), there are several relevant ecological differences between them. These groups will be used throughout this account in describing the diversity of bat life histories. Teeling et al., 2002

Count Dracula has appeared in over two hundred films from at least ten countries, as well as in plays, books, comics and on television. Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" has never been out of print, and commercial merchandising includes package holidays to Dracula's castle in Rumania led by an "occult"guide. The story source for Stoker's novel was said to be Vlad Dracul, a 15th century ruler of the Transylvanian province of Wallachia. He apparently had over 23,000 people impaled on wooden stakes, and used to eat his meals while watching their agony. He was a sadist, and a mass murderer, yes, but no vampire. There was a vampire woman, however: an Austrian Countess - Elizabeth Bathony, a society beauty of the Imperial Court. As her looks faded with age, she imagined that the blood of young girls might keep her youthful and, over a period of 15 years, murdered some 600 of them in torture chambers of remote Carpathian castles, draining them of their blood for the sake of her vanity. Her accomplices were sent to the stake in 1611 but because of her high birth she was walled up in her chambers with a hole for air and food. She died three years later.

Despite their ecological value, bats are relentlessly and unjustifiably persecuted. Bats are often killed because they live near people who needlessly fear them. These actions emphasize the need to educate the public on the reasons for bat conservation and why it is important to use safe, nondestructive methods to alleviate conflicts between people and bats. General sources of information on bats include state Cooperative Extension Services, universities, government natural resource and health departments, and Bat Conservation International (Austin, Texas). Except where control is necessary, bats should be appreciated from a distance, and not disturbed.

Bats are one of the most prolific forms of mammals with over 900 species living in the world and making up over 20% of all mammals. Bats are the only form of mammal to have attained powered flight. Several mammals like flying squirrels glide but cannot stay in the air for long like bats can. In the United States there are 45 species of bats and seven species in the U.S. are in danger of extinction. These endangered species are: Lesser long-nosed bat - nectar-feeding and insect eating bat of the Southwestern U.S. Hawaiian hoary bat - only indigenous bat in Hawaii. Eats insects. Greater (Mexican) long-nosed bat - nectar-feeding and insect eating bat that lives in the Big Bend area of southwestern Texas. Virginia big-eared bat - insect eating bat that lives in a few cave in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky. Ozark big-eared bat - only found in some caves in Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas. Indiana bat - insect eating bat that during the summer lives in hollow trees and in the winter stays in just nine caves in the U.S.

    Hello!
    Welcome to my WebPage.
    This is my personal page.
I initially created this page to help educated people about bats.
I've been an avid photographer for years. I then learned how to use paint Shop Pro. I created all of the graphics on these pages. This new background is a photo I "fixed".
The photo was taken in Berlin, Germany in 1996.
When THE WALL "came down" several artists put their art on the THE WALL in celebration.
This part of the THE WALL was behind a fence
and only had dirt on it - it was protected by a construction site
from others who would have spray painted over it. So I cloned the dirt out with Paint Shop Pro. This resembles the original work. I put my camera lense thru the fence so the fence would not be in the photo. I think it's a wonderful work of art - I wish I knew who did it. [added August 12, 2007] I found that I enjoy working with graphic files, especially my own photography. I found that I

Bats Click the speaker to hear the Bat! WHAT ARE BATS ANWAY? Bats are the only mammal that really flies. (Flying squirrels just glide down from a high spot.) As mammals, they are warm blooded, have fur, give live birth, and make milk for their babies. There are over 900 kinds of bats, but only about ten live in northeast Florida Most of the bats in Florida are small, with wingspans of less than one and a half feet. The biggest Eastern US bat only weighs as much as 17 dimes. This is a good name for bats because their wings are actually made up of long fingers with skin in between. The skin between the fingers is smooth and strong. Florida bats are usually brown, black, or reddish-brown in color. They have extremely large ears and very sharp teeth. If frightened, they will bite!
Be sure you NEVER handle a Bat in the wild! Click here to learn about Bat wings. WHAT DO BATS EAT? Almost all bats eat insects. In fact, one brown bat can eat up to 3000 mosquitoes each night, so bats definitely benefit people! Since there are lots of insects during the summer, that is the best time to look for bats.

Bats may be the most misunderstood animals in the United States. Almost all U.S. bats, and 70 percent of the bat species worldwide, feed almost exclusively on insects and are thus extremely beneficial. One bat can eat between 600 and 1,000 mosquitoes and other insect pests in just one hour.
Bats in other parts of the world feed on a variety of items in addition to insects. Many species feed primarily on fruit, while several types feed on nectar and pollen. Fruit bats perform an extremely important function as seed dispersers. Nectar-eating bats are important pollinators. Many plant species depend almost entirely on bats for pollination.
Of the 45 species of bats found in the continental United States, six are listed as endangered. These species are the gray bat, Indiana bat, Ozark big-eared bat, Virginia big-eared bat, lesser long-nosed bat, and greater Mexican long-nosed bat.
