Beekeeping Business
T he thought of starting a beekeeping business does sound exciting and fun, but in reality a lot of work is done and a lot of time is involved.
Most people who are in this are actually doing this as a hobby. Having a hobby and a livelihood are two entirely different areas since one is something you invest time and in some cases money and one is when you're trying to make a living at. Beekeeping is like farming you have to stay on top of the market demands and be technologically savvy because much of the business is going to depend on how fast you can produce a single product.
Yet this is where you're going to learn that beekeeping isn't even like that because if you expect to make a profit you would have had to have been in the business for a long time and following the trends on what the market demanded of the time. Today if you don't even have a website then you should consider yourself a under dog in the business area because that is how you connect to the world by owning a business website or blog.
Most of the companies today are commercialized because the small businesses today are just not equipped to handle the mass production of honey and small businesses won't make a lot giving the fact you are paid by the pound and the average amount after weighing the whole season isn't a whole lot.

THE BEEKEEPING PAGE
Welcome to the home page of Michael Mordenti from Lords Valley, PA located 75 miles N.W of NYC . I have been a hobbyist Beekeeper for 9 years (and still learning) I manage 9-11 beehives depending on the time of ( year ) . Hope to add more soon. I produce and pack raw spring and fall wildflower honey, pollen, propolis and beeswax from the wildflowers located here in the Pocono Mts. I also make beeswax candles and pack other products of the hive which are sold locally and given away to family and friends as gifts. For more information on these products feel free to email me at the address on the bottom of this page, or through my guest book. I created this web page to make more people aware of beekeeping, pollination and the benefits of pollen, propolis and raw unprocessed honey, compaired to the highly heated and highly filtered (only to look good honey you see on the supermarket shelves), this kind of treatment filters out some of the nutritional value and most of the pollen out of the honey. A QUOTE "the secret of my health is applying honey on the inside and oil outside."

Notes on Keeping Bees in Urban and Suburban Neighborhoods Many beekeepers have bee hives in their back yards. Some bees are even kept on city roof-tops. Bees can travel several miles to collect nectar and pollen, so they do not need flowering plants close by. Most suburbs have plenty of flowers, and bees can make a good crop of local honey. City beekeepers must take special care so their bees do not become a nuisance to neighbors, or even appear to be a problem. We all want good neighborly relations! Bee stings are usually neighbors' biggest concern. Usually, beekeepers can care for their bees in ways that allow neighbors to feel safe and comfortable in their yards. The Fence A Fence is important for most backyard beekeepers. A six foot high fence or shrubbery can serve several purposes:
  • Forces the bees flight path above people's heads. Bees normally travel in a straight path to their hive, and a fence raises their flight path up over everyone's head. A fence reduces the chance that a bee will accidentally collide with someone walking nearby. Creates an "out of sight - out of mind" situation. Some people may be overly concerned about bees in the neighborhood. A fence hides most evidence that managed bees are in the neighborhood.

There are some 150 U.S. crops and more than 50 California crops pollinated by honeybees, for example, apples, fruits, berries, almonds, melons, cucumbers, clovers and alfalfa. We have the honeybee to thank for one third of all the food we eat. Without the bees, we would be eating mostly rice, wheat, and corn instead of the wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables, and nuts we enjoy today. This insect pollinates BILLIONS OF DOLLARS of agricultural crops each year. In addition, it is impossible to determine the tremendous value these pollinators have in our urban gardens. Now, since the demise of all of our feral (wild) honeybee populations, their value in our neighborhoods is greater than ever. Honeybees by the Number Back to Menu The Honeybee colony has:

Home Up Observation Hives Cell-plug Queen Rearing ... Links John's Beekeeping Notebook Feeding Bees Feeding sugar syrup can supplement a colony's honey stores to prevent the bees from starving. Feeding can also stimulate the colony to increase egg laying, so a colony can have more bees gathering nectar during the main nectar flow. Feeding Hungry Bees The best way to prevent starvation is to simply leave enough honey on the hives, and avoid artificial feeding altogether. My first preference for feeding is to to transfer a few frames of honey from a hive that has enough honey. During my early spring inspection, I sometimes equalize the amount of honey between hives to avoid starvation. When artificial feeding must be done, here are a few options: Syrup
To prevent starvation, it is best for the bees to fill a lot of comb with syrup quickly so the colony is not stimulated to raise more brood. We also want the syrup thick or "heavy". A 1:1 ratio of water to dry granulated sugar works well. A top feeder (right) delivers syrup fast, and can hold several gallons of syrup. The bees walk up at one end. A screen over the dam and down to the bottom of the pan prevents bees from drowning.
