A New Suspect in the Investigation of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)
Researchers Discover Unusual Virus A team from the University of Montana has identified a new insect iridescent virus (IIV) in CCD colonies with the help of a technique developed by the military called proteomics. This discovery is unique in that this is a DNA virus unlike other bee viruses that are RNA based. This research team claims to have found a "significant statistical link between CCD, the iridescent virus and a fungal parasite of the genus Nosema."

'Honeybee Democracy'
By Tom Seeley
I wrote 'Honeybee Democracy' to share with biologists and beekeepers what has been learned by Martin Lindauer in Germany in the 1950s, and by myself and others in America since the 1970s, about how the workers in a honeybee swarm conduct a democratic decision-making process to choose their new home. I also want to share with readers the pleasures that I have experienced in investigating swarms of honeybees. I can thank these beautiful little creatures for many hours of the purest joy of discovery, interspersed among (to be sure) days and weeks of fruitless and sometimes discouraging work. To give a sense of the excitement and challenge of studying the bees, I have included in the book various personal events, speculations, and thoughts about conducting scientific studies. I do hope you'll enjoy the following sample from chapter 3 of the book.

Beekeeping
Photo courtesy of: www.berea.edu/gardensgreenhouse/learningopportunities.asp The Beekeeper's Handbook provides a practical summary and guide to the tools and techniques of beekeeping as it is practiced in the industrialized countries. One major problem with the practical literature on beekeeping is that most of it was written for developed countries. It is assumed that such specialty items as prepared comb foundations can be purchased (not made) by the beekeeper. These foundations, fitted into frames, assure that there will be a "beespace" of 5/16 of an inch between frames, which bees will leave as a passageway. Comb foundations are important as they reduce the amount of beeswax required for building comb, enable the beekeeper to control where the comb will be constructed, and are usually made of worker-cell bases, which reduce the number of unwanted drone cells. Home Honey Production . This should be of interest in tropical countries where distance, cost, and high temperatures make it difficult or impossible to get commercially made wax foundation in good condition.

http://www.attra.org/attra-pub/beekeeping.html
Introduction
This publication is intended as a guide for anyone interested in beginning or expanding a beekeeping enterprise. Whether the bees are kept as pollinators for crops or for the income from their products, producers need to be aware of their states' apiary laws concerning inspection, registration, and permits, as well as labeling and marketing standards. Producers also need to be aware of pesticide application laws and pesticide notification laws relative to bees. Both beginning and experienced beekeepers need to consider liability insurance; the possibility of Africanized hybrid bees taking over the hives; and all the pests and diseases that afflict bees and their colonies.

Welcome to BeeKeeping Success
Beekeeping can be a fascinating hobby but it can also be a profitable business. Beekeeping is a full time occupation for other people. There are thousands of hobby beekeepers worldwide and numerous large-scale commercial beekeepers. According to estimates, the annual production of honey worldwide exceeds a million metric tons. Almost every person can be an apiarist. But some who have allergies to bee stings and pollen might want to consider pursuing other hobbies or enterprise. The truth is honey bees would normally sting only when they have to defend themselves. In fact, an individual may develop immunity from bee venom in time. So if all the precautions are met, you can start your beekeeping. Honeybees are social insects that live in hives. A typical honey bee colony has thousands of bees working together in building nest, collecting food and rearing brood. The bees in a colony are divided in three groups and each has its own tasks to perform. If you want to get started in Beekeeping, make sure that you have the basic components of the hive, protective gears, equipments in handling the honey, and a bee source. You can start your bee business by buying package bees, buying an already established bee colony or collecting swarms. But for starters, packages are recommended.

Although Beekeeping is being written with the initial intent in aiding hobbyist, it is a growing resource that could also aid commercial beekeepers similarly. This Wiki book however, is not being written in a completely linear manner. Because of the writing style of this book, through the act of simply reading it chapter-by-chapter content will be lost. Reading in this manner should still prove to be worthwhile, but more topics and greater depth may be uncovered by following links within the text. Much like other Wiki based texts, Beekeeping is dependant on the collaborative effort of the community. Welcome to the Kiltys' web pages
This website is about James and Sharon Kilty and some of our work, experience and ideas. Some pages are as yet a dream, others are in irregular development, especially with new images.
themes
Sharon has been developing work based on her experience of arthritis and her desire to enable others with arthritis to have a voice about their experience and learning. Beekeeping is a major activity for James and he provides honey and candles to local people and contributes to the development of beekeeping in Cornwall. Honey-Mountain is the trading name of James' Beekeeping enterprise selling local honey, beeswax candles, queens and small colonies of bees. Beeswax candles are available for purchase on a small scale wholesale, via mail order or local collection and delivery. The Institute for Holistic Education is the umbrella for James' educational consultancy, supervision and training work and publications. Interpersonal Skills Training in Higher Education is the subject of a book in the process of development as an open source web site. It is envisaged as a co-operative project in which many authors contribute materials and try out and develop the content and activities of the book. Co-counselling is a potent peer support process for personal development. James was involved in co-counselling between 1975 and 2003 and made some significant contributions to the development of co-counselling in the UK and elsewhere.
