A major reason for generating this part of the website, which is dedicated to the study of bees, is to educate, both beekeepers and the general public about bees in general and the specific methods used by beekeepers in handling bees as well as the means whereby we can breed "better" bees.

Welcome to another beekeeping lessons from Long Lane Honey Bee Farms.
Another guest speaker at the conference was Michael Palmer from Vermont. Michael is well known for his unique beekeeping practices, especially how he overwinters his hives and nucs. I enjoyed spending time talking with Michael and seeing how close we are on our approach to beekeeping. I also learned that Missouri is full of great beekeepers. Now all they need is a state queen rearing program.

My first piece of equipment is a funny round shaped item. A fellow beekeeper donated a large amount of equipment and this was in the mix. It puzzled me when I first saw it. I spent a few minutes wondering if it was part of a larger item or not. What do you think it is? It was purchased from a Canadian vendor at a bee conference. Look at the photo and try to guess.
Okay, click on the video below as we walk into my apiary and look inside the hive to see how this item is used.

WELCOME to NORTH LONDON BEEKEEPERS
Our aims are to promote apiculture and to educate the general public in beekeeping by holding classes, lectures and discussions on beekeeping and running stalls at local festivals showing live bees and selling honey. We provide advice and assistance to beekeeping members. We are affiliated to the “Middlesex Federation of Beekeepers' Associations” and the “British Beekeepers’ Association” (BBKA) representing our members at area and national levels. Nationally, beekeepers are supported by the “National Bee Unit” which comes under FERA and provides Regional Bee Inspectors and research teams. Unfortunately we cannot accept new members until 2011 as we have been overwhelmed by the number of new members wanting to start beekeeping.

Why this beekeeping web site?
I suppose you'd have to be living under a rock these days to have not heard that the honey bees and beekeepers are in trouble. The problems are complex, far reaching and mostly recent. They are certainly a threat to the survival of the beekeeping industry but, even more so, to the survival of many plants which we need or want for food and many other plants that are a necessary part of the environment. It seems like there is some controversy over whether it is even possible to keep bees without treatments. But there are many of us who are doing this and succeeding.

Our Association in South Devon now supports over 100 members. Our purpose is to promote bees and beekeeping. We currently have ambitious plans on the table to develop our Branch Apiary - extending the area we rent and building a clubhouse for teaching and as a place for members to meet to discuss bees and catch up. There is a lot to do - fundraising, preparing the site, relocating beehives and so on. If you might be interested in joining in, please read our latest news update which gives more detail about what we are trying to do and how you can help. For further information about bees - news, events, resources, contacts - please visit the new Devon Beekeepers' Association website: www.devonbeekeepers.org.uk
The plynth has landed!
This is what the original Clay Lane apiary site looks like this weekend. The concrete base has now been laid, and and a sewerage system installed. Work by a dedicated team of members continues as the site is cleared of excess vegetation and overhanging branches. Many thanks to all those who have given up their spare time to make this happen.

Beekeeper Henry Peters, August 1995. Bryan Schlosser (Regina Leader-Post) Beekeeping and the production of honey have been an important industry in Saskatchewan since the early 1900s. In 2003, honey production was estimated to be worth $35 million to the provincial economy. Beekeeping is a part-time activity for some 1,000 producers and a full-time career for 150. The migration of honeybees into Saskatchewan coincided with the coming of the first settlers from eastern Canada and the United States. The first records of honeybees in the province date back to 1900; by 1922 there were about eighty-fuve beekeepers who produced 24,000 pounds of honey. Most of these beekeepers were located in the southern and eastern parts of the province. Interest in producing honey was aroused at this time by a growing demand as well as by increasing prices, due in part to the shortages and high prices of sugar which occurred during and immediately after World War I The Saskatchewan Beekeepers Association was organized in 1923 with John Hubbard of Grenfell as the first president and Thomas Mack of Lumsden as the first vice-president. Hubbard held the first organized beekeeper meeting in 1920 at his apiary in Grenfell, assisted by Robert Hamilton of Aylsham. Organized research and extension work in beekeeping had their beginning at the
