Honey bees can be kept almost anywhere there are flowering plants that produce nectar and pollen. Choose a site for bee hives that is discrete, sheltered from winds and partially shaded. Avoid low spots in a yard where cold, damp air accumulates in winter.
Be considerate of non-beekeeping neighbors. Place hives so that bee flight paths do not cross sidewalks, playgrounds or other public areas. In dry weather, bees may collect water at neighbors' swimming pools or water spigots. Avoid this by giving your bees a water source in your yard such as a container with floating wood or styrofoam chips. The floating objects prevent bees from drowning
The management and maintenance of colonies of honeybees. Although the commonly known honeybee species is native to Europe and Africa only, humans have transported them to other continents, and in most places they have flourished. The natural home for a honeybee colony is a hollow tree, log, or cave.

Is Beekeeping for You?
what it really takes to be a hobbyist beekeeper. I started working with honeybees at 14 years of age. I helped a friend inspect his many hives and even tried some extracting of honey. I was amazed by it and now 30 years later I still am amazed by the fascinating world of the honeybee. But this hobby is not for everyone. Hopefully you will know if beekeeping is for you by time you finish this Novice Beekeeping Course. Work is a big part of beekeeping. Hive boxes ( called Supers ) and nearly all hive related parts come in kit form and require assembly. Hours and hours can be spent wiring foundation frames, nailing and gluing boxes, all before you even think of getting bees. I'll be adding box and frame assembly photos and techniques soon to this site. But be assured it can be a lull in your hobby unless you enjoy building and assembly lining projects. I suggest that anyone interesting in Beekeeping should expect to spend up to $500 to get fully setup and running. Equipment is not cheap and bees need to be insured for shipping. Lots of up front costs and modest reoccurring costs for medication and repairs. Your time though is the main source of reoccurring costs. Expect there to be unforeseen circumstances that will require hours and hours of labor on your part. Wintering alone can be costly and time consuming to the hobby beekeeper. The good thing about Beekeeping today is that it has many NON-BEEKEEPING spin-off hobbies that meld well. I can't get enough of digitally photographing the bees, and I really enjoy writing. With easy point and click software today, anyone can build nice websites with no training in HTML or any other computer language. Again, initial costs can set you back. But there is nothing like having quality equipment that lasts and lasts.

A beekeeper (or apiarist) may keep bees in order to collect honey and beeswax, or for the purpose of pollinating crops, or to produce bees for sale to other beekeepers. A location where bees are kept is called an apiary.

          History of beekeeping Edit
Beekeeping is one of the oldest forms of food production. Some of the earliest evidence of beekeeping is from rock painting, dating to around 13,000 BC. It was particularly well developed in Egypt and was discussed by the Roman writers Virgil, Gaius Julius Hyginus, Varro, and Columella. Aspects of the lives of bees and beekeeping are discussed at length by Aristotle. A pioneering beekeeping popularizer in the 19th century United States was Amos Root. Beekeeping was traditionally practiced for the bees' honey harvest, although nowadays crop pollination service can often provide a greater part of a commercial beekeeper's income. Other hive products are pollen, royal jelly, and propolis, which are also used for nutritional and medicinal purposes, and beeswax, which is used in candle making, cosmetics, wood polish, and for modelling. The modern use of hive products has changed little since ancient times.

80. Knox Cellars
Orchard mason beekeeping supplies, in Washington State.
http://www.knoxcellars.com/omb.htm
Look for our product display in a retail store in your area. This small black gentle bee is a native of almost the entire continental United States. Mother Nature's great spring pollinator, the ORCHARD MASON BEE (Osmia Lignaria), was pollinating the fruits and flowers of the continent for millions of years before the first colonists brought the honey bee to North America. This bee is not a hive dwelling social bee like the honey bee. It lays individual eggs in a mud walled cell that it has provisioned with pollen and nectar. Because it can not make it's own hole, it depends upon others for the nest site. In nature it frequently lays it's eggs in abandoned beetle holes in the old growth forest. In cities it will use the spaces between shingles on a dwelling. If we provide proper holes for egg laying, the Orchard Mason is very easy to propagate at home. They are completely non-aggressive and perfectly safe to raise in your backyard, as I do in my garden at Knox Cellars. Early in the Spring, when the weather warms, the hibernating bees emerge from their nesting holes, males and females from each hole. They promptly mate and the female immediately begins her nest building. She gathers pollen and nectar from the spring blossoms and brings it to the nesting hole. When the proper amount of food is gathered and placed in the back of the hole, the female backs in and deposits one egg into the food provision. Then the chamber is completed with a plug of mud masonry collected piece by piece by the hard working female.
