Astronomers noticed that the light of some stars did not remain constant over time. In 1783, a young amateur astronomer, named John Goodricke, communicated to the astronomical community a periodic variation in the brightness of the star Algol, or Persei. Algol appeared to vary with a period of 2 day, 20 hours and 45 minutes (Goodricke 1783). (Note: This period only differs from the present day period of 4 minutes)! Goodricke's contribution to the study of binary systems lies in his interpretation of this light variation. Goodricke wrote that ``if it were not perhaps too early to hazard even a conjecture on the cause of this variation, I should imagine it could hardly be accounted for otherwise than...by the interposition of a large body revolving around Algol.'' Initially, William Herschel and other astronomers did not accept this unbelievable idea of one star blocking the light of another star. Time would prove these astronomers wrong, while observations would prove Goodricke's imagination right. The orientation of the orbital plane for a binary system can be randomly inclined with respect to one's line of sight to the system. If the orbital plane of the system is perpendicular to the line of sight, the observer will view the system ``face-on'' or at an inclination angle of

Used extensively by industry and the government, simulation models convey how an existing system might perform if altered, or how a new system might behave before a prototype is fabricated. The players may even be other models, creating dynamic scenarios that detail the interactions of different models or disparate components. An X-ray binary is a special case where one of the stars is a collapsed object such as a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole, and the separation between the stars is small enough so that matter is transferred from the normal star to the compact star star, producing X-rays in the process. Description of Contest
The purpose of this Contest is to prove General Relativity.
The Contest consist of the following task:
  • Write one general purpose program (any programming language will do) which simulates the movement of n objects over a certain period of time.
  • The simulation method used (algorithms), should be based on the Rules of General Relativity.
  • The program should be able to simulate and demonstrate the following examples:
  • Forward movement (perihelion shift) of the planet Mercury (43 arc sec angle) around the Sun.
  • The bending of light around the Sun (1.75 sec).
  • The movement of a binary star system. The stars should spiral together.
  • A clock in a space ship around the Earth.
  • Twin paradox (SR). i.e. at least two clocks should be included.
  • The behaviour of black holes.
  • The results of the simulation should match actual observations. For the rules of General Relativity see the following: General Relativity with John Baez

Giant planets, comets and Pluto-like bodies may form around binary star systems, not just single stars, a new study suggests. The evidence comes via a rotating, molecular disk found orbiting the young binary star system V4046 Sagittarii with the Submillimeter Array's radio telescope system atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii. This finding was announced last week by a team of astronomers at the 214th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Pasadena, Calif. The discovery suggests that other binary systems could host as-yet undetected planets. Planets around binary stars have traditionally been difficult to detect because the added star complicates traditional planet-searching techniques. Extrasolar planets have been found orbiting around a few other binaries, but the stars in these systems are mostly much further apart than the V4046 Sagittarii pair. "In this case the stars are so close together, and the profile of the gas – in terms of the types of molecules that are there – is so much like the types of gaseous disks that we see around single stars, that we now have a direct link between planets forming around single stars and planets forming around double stars," said team member Joel Kastner of Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.

Stars are often born in groups. Early in the history of the universe, many stars were born in compact clusters of hundreds of thousands or millions of stars called globular clusters. More recent star formation within the Galactic disk gives rise to open clusters of hundreds or thousands of stars. But stars are also born in smaller groupings of two or three. Many of the bright, nearby stars are members of binary or triplet star systems. For instance, the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, is a member of a triple-star system. The second-closest star to Earth, Rigil Kentaurus (α Centauri) has a slightly-dimmer companion star. Another bright, nearby star, Procyon (α Canis Minoris), has a 13 th magnitude companion star. These systems are not unusual. In fact, multiple star systems of main-sequence stars are far more common than single main-sequence stars in the Galactic disk. The binary main-sequence star systems slightly outnumber single main-sequence stars. The ratios of binary systems to triplet and quadruplet systems is This means that only 34% of the main sequence stars in the Galactic disk have no companion stars.

Binary stars are two stars rotating around a common centre of mass. About half of all stars are binaries of one sort or another. Many star systems in fact contain more than two stars; but these multiple systems can generally be regarded as multiple sets of binary stars orbiting one another. Castor , for instance, contains three pairs of stars.
There are four categories of binary stars, depending on how close the stars are to one another.
Distant Binaries orbit many astronomical units from each other. A distant binary such as Alpha Centauri A+B can have planets orbiting one, or both, stars, but only if the planets orbit at a distance of less than one third of the minimum distance between the stars.
Close Binaries orbit within a few stellar diameters of each other, but are not in direct physical contact. Close binaries can have a system of planets orbiting around both stars, but only if the orbit of the closest planet orbit is wider than more than 3.5 x the distance between the stars ( more on close binaries here ). Both Distant Binaries and Close Binaries are known as
