The Journal of Biochemistry founded in 1922 publishes the results of original research in the fields of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell, and Biotechnology written in English in the form of Regular Papers or Rapid Communications. A Rapid Communication is not a preliminary note, but it is, though brief, a complete and final publication. The materials described in Rapid Communications should not be included in a later paper. The Journal also publishes short reviews (JB Review) and papers solicited by the Editorial Board.

    What is Biochemistry?
Biochemistry is a multidisciplinary program of scientific research which involves the study of enzymes, metabolic pathways, and the synthesis, structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids. This program contains a strong emphasis on biochemical and molecular biological techniques and on conceptual training in biochemical experimentation.
Modern-day biochemists carry out research in a wide variety of areas that include creating genetically-engineered crops that are resistant to environmental pressures, perfecting forensic techniques, elucidating structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids, developing drugs for human and animal health, and bioethanol production.
Because biochemists need to be familiar with several scientific disciplines, biochemistry majors are required to take introductory courses in biology and chemistry, as well as selected courses from other scientific disciplines including mathematics, genetics, physics, microbiology, anatomy and physiology.

Weibel Lab - Controlling the interface between bacterial cells and their environment Microstructured materials are beginning to have an impact on microbiology. They make it possible to isolate, manipulate, and study single cells of bacteria and can be combined with chemical biology, biochemistry, genetics, optical microscopy, and scanning probe microscopy to study microbial physiology.
We are using materialssuch as the microelectrode array shown aboveto isolate and manipulate hundreds of individual cells of bacteria in parallel and study the dynamics of structural proteins that play a role in controlling cell shape. Tracking the dynamics of proteins in a large number of cells using spatial and time-resolved epifluorescence microscopy makes it possible for us to explore their function quantitatively.

Page address: http://www.mnsu.edu/programs/biochemistry.html Department College Undergraduate Degree Type(s) BA, BS Program Description Biochemistry is a discipline that encompasses both biology and chemistry. This rapidly expanding science focuses on the study of the molecular aspects of living organisms. The tools and concepts of biochemistry are important as a foundation for careers in many areas of research and in medicine. Students considering a BA or BS degree in biochemistry should consult a biochemistry advisor for specific information regarding the program.
Biochemistry is an appropriate degree major for those students planning to pursue professional programs in medicine, pharmacy, optometry, chiropractic, physical therapy, podiatry, osteopathic medicine, or dentistry. Admission Requirements Admission to the major is required before a student can enroll in 300- and 400-level courses. To be eligible for admission to the biochemistry program a student must have declared biochemistry as a first major; completed 32 credits, including BIOL 105 and 106, as well as CHEM 201 and 202; and achieved a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Applications for admission to the biochemistry major are available in the College Advising Center, Trafton C-125.
