Biodiversity home Biodiversity home english français ... Instruments Biodiversity Biodiversity for food and agriculture includes the components of biological diversity that are essential for feeding human populations and improving the quality of life. It includes the variety and variability of ecosystems, animals, plants and micro-organisms, at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels, which are necessary to sustain human life as well as the key functions of ecosystems. The conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity for food and agriculture play a critical role in the fight against hunger, by ensuring environmental sustainability while increasing food production.
Such diversity is the result of thousands of years of farmers’ and breeders’ activities, land and forest utilization, and fisheries and aquaculture activities combined with millions of years of natural selection. Most of the human population lives in areas where food production and nature co-exist together. The large and increasing number of under- and mal-nourished in the world, the prospect of rising inequality, difficulty of access to food by the most vulnerable populations, the decreased availability of natural resources and the uncertainty of climate change are among the main challenges facing FAO and its work on biodiversity for food and agriculture. It is foreseen that developing countries will, in some areas, show a decrease in agricultural productivity between 20-40% due to the effects of climate change. This may lead to pressure on natural resources.

Biodiversity Statement
Biodiversity
Biological diversity, or "biodiversity," refers to the variety of life on earth. As defined by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, it includes diversity of ecosystems, species and genes, and the ecological processes that support them. Natural diversity in ecosystems provides essential economic benefits and services to human society - such as food, clothing, shelter, fuel and medicines - as well as ecological, recreational, cultural and aesthetic values, and thus plays an important role in sustainable development. Biodiversity is under threat in many areas of the world. Concern about global biodiversity loss has emerged as a prominent and widespread public issue. Chevron adopted a Biodiversity Statement in 2007 and requires a biodiversity assessment as part of its ESHIA process for major capital projects. Our Health, Environment and Safety staff work to protect habitats near our operations and share their best practices through the Chevron Biodiversity Network.

DIVA-GIS is a free computer program for mapping and geographic data analysis (a geographic information system ( GIS ). With DIVA-GIS you can make maps of the world, or of a very small area, using, for example, state boundaries, rivers, a satellite image, and the locations of sites where an animal species was observed. We also provide free spatial data for the whole world that you can use in DIVA-GIS or other programs.

Following a discussion of the term "biodiversity" and why biodiversity is important, students will take virtual trips (via video footage) to Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located off the California coast, and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. They will then work in groups to further explore one of the two ocean treasures, noting the types of wildlife the sanctuary supports, the importance of the ecosystem, and the threats it faces. Groups will also consider how each sanctuary's location might affect its health and long-term outlook. To conclude, the class will come back together to share their findings, and compare and contrast the two national marine sanctuaries.

Introductory notes.

Biodiversity - By Mara Hurwitt
Towards A Whole Planet Simple prudence dictates that no species, however humble, should ever be allowed to go extinct if it is within the power of humanity to save it.
- Edward O. Wilson, Pellegrino University Research Professor and Honorary Curator in Entomology at Harvard University What Is Biodiversity?
In essence, biological diversity or biodiversity is the sum of all life on Earth. It includes the vast array of life forms, their individual genetic makeup, their life processes, and their interrelationships in communities and ecosystems. Peter H. Raven, Director of the Missouri Botanical Garden offers this more eloquent definition:
"At the simplest level, biodiversity is the sum total of all the plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms in the world, or in a particular area; all of their individual variation; and all of the interactions between them. It is the set of living organisms that make up the fabric of the planet Earth and allow it to function as it does, by capturing energy from the sun and using it to drive all of life's processes; by forming communities of organisms that have, through several billion years of life's history on Earth, altered the nature of the atmosphere, the soil and the water of our planet; and by making possible the sustainability of our planet through their life activities now." Biodiversity Studies According to Edward O. Wilson, a world-renowned scientist and researcher, biodiversity emerged as a scientific discipline during the last 25 years in response to two important events: the realization that human activity threatens the extinction of many plant and animal species either directly or indirectly, by habitat destruction, and the recognition that we have the ability to end that process at minimal cost to human welfare. Biodiversity studies are a hybrid discipline, drawing on both evolutionary biology and biotechnology in "the systematic examination of the full array of organisms and the origin of this diversity, together with the technology by which diversity can be maintained and utilized for the benefit of humanity."

57. Canadian Biodiversity: Theory
Overview and definitions.
http://www.canadianbiodiversity.mcgill.ca/english/theory/
An Introduction to Biodiversity Theory The science of biodiversity originates largely from ecology (the study of the relationship between organisms and their environment) and evolution (the study of the origin of diversity). From these two fields come its two main goals: to understand the way the natural systems work and are structured, and to understand how it got that way. Why study biodiversity? Although the theory of biodiversity can be studied for its own sake to gain a better idea of how the world works, it has several important practical uses, mostly centred on conservation. By understanding the theory, we can better understand which types of species are most likely to decline under different circumstances and also know how best to protect those species from extinction. If diversity is reduced in an area, we can also best prevent further loss and try to restore the lost diversity if we have a good grasp of what the outcome of different actions, such as reintroducing lost species, will be. As human activities continue reduce the biodiversity on the planet, it becomes increasingly important to know what the effect of our actions will be before we lose any more diversity. This section consists of four parts. The first introduces the three levels of biodiversity that are studied, the second looks at how diversity can be gained or lost, the third examines the composition of diversity in more depth, and the fourth looks at how biodiversity affects the functioning of ecosystems. Each of these only scrapes the surface of the research available; the References section of this site lists more detailed resources.
