Jump to: navigation search Previous (Biochemistry) Next (Bioethics) ... Rainforests are the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth Biodiversity or biological diversity is the diversity of life , ranging from the level of genes to species . First coined at a 1986 conference and subsequently used in 1988 in the book BioDiversity, edited by E. O. Wilson, the term has grown in popularity and is used widely in science and conservation policy. Biodiversity offers many benefits: ecological , economic, scientific, and moral . Despite this, there is a trend toward lower biodiversity as a result of human action, as monoculture is promoted in agriculture , habitats are replaced through commercial and residential use, and species become increasingly extinct. The extinction of species has become so pronounced that there is concern that we are witnessing the beginning of a new mass extinction . One of the challenges society faces is quantifying biodiversity and understanding how best to create regulations and a moral climate that both support maintaining biodiversity and human development.

Did wild relatives get a boost at Nagoya?
by Luigi on November 1, 2010 I think I may have Nibbled the fact that IUCN released a few days ago at Nagoya the results of a massive study of the global pattern of threat to vertebrate diversity Also to coincide with Nagoya, IUCN collaborated with Kew and the Natural History Museum, London on a And of course, the website A-Z Guide of Areas of Biodiversity Importance was launched at a side event in COP 10. The press release is on the UNEP website Compare and contrast with this map Julian Ramirez of CIAT has kindly sent me, showing the richness of wild relatives of a dozen or more major crops. Question for anyone who was at Nagoya: were livestock and crop wild relatives discussed during the proceedings? I ask because in a recent posting on the Crop Wild Relatives discussion group ex situ So what happened? comments

Species
Genes (genetic diversity) It is important to understand that these are all interconnected. As we know, several species are only found in specific areas, or ecosystems. We do not find many rainforest trees in the desert for example. Some species are adapted to specific temperature ranges or need a minimum amount of rainfall every year to survive [ rainforests ]. Other species may live their whole lives on land except when it is time to mate. Frogs and toads, for example, lay eggs that need water to develop. Species may also be restricted to an environment because of other species, either because of competition that allows the stronger competitor to occupy the space [mangroves] or by intricate relationships whereby one or more species are dependent on the presence of another species, [ SYMBIOTIC Shrimp-Goby Relationships ]. So it is important to realize that in nature there is often a reason why things are found where they are and that every habitat is a network of species. These species have generally, in turn, evolved to be dependent on each other but also on the specific conditions found in that environment for survival.

  • Students will explore the complexity of biodiversity. Students will examine the variety of life within the five kingdoms. Students will realize that people are dependent on intact habitats that sustain the various organisms we need to produce food, medicines, clothing, and other materials. Students will learn about certain species' roles in an ecosystem. Students will discover that life can be found almost everywhere on earth.

Biodiversity is often used as a measure of the health of biological systems. Evolution and meaning
Biodiversity is a neologism and portmanteau word, from biology and diversity. The Science Division of The Nature Conservancy used the term "natural diversity" in a 1975 study, "The Preservation of Natural Diversity." The term biological diversity was used even before that by conservation scientists like Robert E. Jenkins and Thomas Lovejoy. The word biodiversity itself may have been coined by W.G. Rosen in 1985 while planning the National Forum on Biological Diversity organized by the National Research Council (NRC) which was to be held in 1986, and first appeared in a publication in 1988 when entomologist E. O. Wilson used it as the title of the
