    Reaper Protein Initiates Cell Death
    Friday October 29, 2010 This cell is undergoing programmed cell death.
    In an attempt to gain a better understanding of the naturally occurring process apoptosis , or programmed cell death, researchers are focusing on a specific protein called the Reaper. Cells don't continually destroy themselves because polymers called inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) work to inhibit cellular self-destruct sequences. Reaper proteins initiate cell death by inhibiting IAPs. By better understanding the process of cell death, researchers hope to be able to target and destroy certain cells , such as cancer cells, while leaving other cells unharmed.

Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Among the most important topics are five unifying principles that can be said to be the fundamental axioms of modern biology:
  • Cells are the basic unit of life New species and inherited traits are the product of evolution Genes are the basic unit of heredity An organism will regulate its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant condition ... Living organisms consume and transform energy
  • Subdisciplines of biology are recognized on the basis of the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the rudimentary chemistry of life;

    Aristotle's Biology
    First published Wed Feb 15, 2006; substantive revision Wed Jul 12, 2006 Aristotle is properly recognized as the originator of the scientific study of life. This is true despite the fact that many earlier Greek natural philosophers occasionally speculated on the origins of living things and much of the Hippocratic medical corpus, which was written before or during Aristotle's lifetime, displays a serious interest in human anatomy, physiology and pathology. Even Plato has Timaeus devote a considerable part of his speech to the human body and its functions (and malfunctions). Nevertheless, before Aristotle, only a few of the Hippocratic treatises are both systematic and empirical, and their focus is exclusively on human health and disease. By contrast, Aristotle considered the investigation of living things, and especially animals, central to the theoretical study of nature. Constituting roughly 25% of the extant corpus, his zoological writings provide a theoretical defense of the proper method for biological investigation; and they provide a record of the first systematic and comprehensive study of animals. There was nothing of similar scope and sophistication again until the 16

    Biology
    Biology, also referred to as the biological sciences, is the study of living organisms utilizing the scientific method. See also: Biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living things. It classifies and describes organisms, their functions, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the natural environment. Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Biology as a separate science was developed in the nineteenth century, as scientists discovered that organisms shared fundamental characteristics. Biology is now a standard subject of instruction at schools and universities around the world, and over a million papers are published annually in a wide array of biology and medicine journals. Most biological sciences are specialized disciplines. Traditionally, they are grouped by the type of organism being studied: botany, the study of plants; zoology, the study of animals; and microbiology, the study of microorganisms.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Biology is the science of life and living things, like plants animals fungi (such as mushrooms ), and bacteria . People who study biology are called biologists. Biology looks at how animals and other organisms behave and work, and what they are like. Biology also studies how organisms react with each other and the environment . It has existed as a science for about 200 years, and was preceded by natural history . Biology has many research fields and branches . Like all sciences, biology uses the scientific method . This means that biologists must be able to show evidence for their ideas, and that other biologists must be able to test the ideas for themselves. Biology attempts to answer questions like these: "What are the characteristics of this living thing?" ( comparative anatomy ); "How should we group living things?" ( classification taxonomy ); "What does this living thing do?" ( behaviour growth ); "How does inheritance work? ( genetics ); "What has been the history of life?" ( palaeontology ). How do organisms relate to their
