So you're asking, what is BIOLOGY ? Well... Here's our best definition. Biology is the study of LIFE and the changes that take place with and around all living things. And don't just think we mean Earth. The study of biology covers every planet and object in the Universe.
In the same way everything on Earth is made up of atoms, everything that is alive on Earth is made up of cells . An entire living thing can be one cell or it can be billions. Most cells on Earth have similar pieces and parts. Let's get started and look inside cell structure . Go take a look!

Biology is the science of life Biologists study all aspects of Earth's living things, including the dynamic processes within them that enable them to develop, survive, and reproduce. Those vital processes include the harnessing of energy and matter, the synthesis of the materials that make up the body, the healing of injuries , and the reproduction of the organism , among many other activities.

Biology deals with every aspect of life in a living organism. Biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living things. It classifies and describes organisms , their functions, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the natural environment. Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution genetics and homeostasis. Biology as a separate science was developed in the nineteenth century as scientists discovered that organisms shared fundamental characteristics. Biology is now a standard subject of instruction at schools and universities around the world, and over a million papers are published annually in a wide array of biology and medicine journals.

Welcome to the Department of Biology
The Biology Department at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including Neuroscience, Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology, Evolution, Ecology, and Marine Biology. Our undergraduate curriculum provides an introductory overview into each of these areas and provides the opportunity for advanced training and specialization in particular areas through course work and research experience. The research activities of the department are centered in four separate research institutes, found in the menu above. These Institutes bring faculty from Biology and other departments with biological interests into contiguous lab space. Interested graduate applicants should view each Institute's web site for an overview of the kind of research conducted, and to contact particular faculty. The Life Sciences web page highlights the interdepartmental connections among Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, and Human Physiology.

What is biology? Simply put, it is the study of life life in all of its grandeur. From the very small algae to the very large elephant, life has a certain wonder about it. With that in mind, how do we know if something is living? Is a virus alive or dead? What are the characteristics of life? These are all very important questions with equally important answers.
    Characteristics of Life
Living things include both the visible world of animals and plants, as well as the invisible world of bacteria . On a basic level, we can say that life is ordered. Organisms have an enormously complex organization. We're all familiar with the intricate systems of the basic unit of life, the cell
Life can also "work." No, not the daily employment variety, but living creatures can take in energy from the environment. This energy, in the form of food, is transformed to maintain

    Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to Biology at ECU! As a recent arrival I feel fortunate to find myself in a biologically extraordinary region working with a tremendous group of scientists and educators. Our faculty has been widely recognizedby ECU and the UNC system with numerous awards, nationally with competitive grants, and internationally through publications in prestigious journals and awards from professional societies. We are united by an enthusiasm for research, a commitment to serving our community and region, and a passion for communicating our knowledge and skills to students. Our students are as accomplished as our faculty and some of their achievements are highlighted on this site. We encourage former students to keep in touch and prospective students to visit. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Description of the Examination
The Biology examination covers material that is usually taught in a one-year college general biology course. The subject matter tested covers the broad field of the biological sciences, organized into three major areas: molecular and cellular biology, organismal biology, and population biology. The examination gives approximately equal weight to these three areas. The examination contains approximately 115 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Some of these are pretest questions that will not be scored. Any time candidates spend on tutorials and providing personal information is in addition to the actual testing time.
