Tesseract
In geometry, the tesseract, also called 8-cell or octachoron, is the four-dimensional analog of the (three-dimensional) cube, where motion along the fourth dimension is often a representation for bounded transformations of the cube through time.

About T-6
T-6 focuses on the modeling of biological systems and the analysis and informatics of molecular and cellular biological data. T-6 is one of the few research groups in the world devoted to mathematical modeling and computational analysis of problems in cellular and molecular biology. Research efforts include understanding dynamics and treatment of viral diseases such as HIV, influenza, and hepatitis; immune system modeling; receptor-ligand interactions and cell signaling; computational aspects of the human genome initiative; pattern recognition in DNA sequences; characterization and prediction of macromolecular structure; protein function and dynamics; and protein folding. T-6 has also created, and is responsible for the maintenance of the Influenza Sequence Database and the HCV and HIV sequence, immunology and resistance databases.

New Breeding Ground For Endangered Whales? High Numbers Of Right Whales Seen In Gulf Of Maine
Tags : Animal Conservation Biology Ecology + Environment Endangered Species ... Marine Biology
Three North Atlantic right whales are visible at the surface on Jordans Basin.
A fourth whale is visible just below the surface at lower left. (Credit: NOAA/Misty Niemeyer)
Just a few days later, on Dec. 6, the team observed only three right whales on Cashes Ledge, about 80 miles east of Gloucester, Mass. Cole says the whales are known to be in the region, but actually seeing them on any given aerial survey is unpredictable. On Dec. 14, the team saw 41 right whales just west of Jordan Basin. An estimated 100 female North Atlantic right whales head south in winter to give birth in the waters off Florida and Georgia, but little is known about where other individual right whales in the population go in winter, largely due to difficult surveying conditions. Given the large geographical area over which North Atlantic right whales can occur, Cole and NEFSC colleagues developed an aerial grid system a few years ago for the Gulf of Maine and waters around Cape Cod to ensure complete coverage of the region. The grid resulted in consistent surveys of areas infrequently surveyed in the past, like Jordan Basin and the Great South Channel, and have shown that whales congregate in certain areas at certain times.

NeuroStereology Workshop
An Introduction to Stereology for Neuroscientists
A two day Introduction to Stereology for Neuroscientists to be held at the Horton Grand Hotel in downtown San Diego immediately prior to the Society for Neuroscience Meeting, November 11-12, 2010.

A four day workshop to be held at Marine Biological Laboratory at Woodshole MA. March 19-24, 2011
Organizer: Mark West Professor of Medical Neurobiology, Author of the most cited scientific papers on the application of modern stereological methods to the nervous system
Course Description and Goals The goal of the workshop is to teach a small group of research scientists how to design, supervise, and critically evaluate stereological studies of the nervous system. Stereology is a methodology that provides meaningful quantitative descriptions of the geometry of three-dimensional structures from measurements that are made on two-dimensional images sampled from a structure of interest. The workshop will emphasize modern ”design based” stereology, which is characterized by the preparation and probing of tissue in such a manner that no assumptions about the size, shape, and orientation of the structures being quantified are necessary. Unlike previously available methods, these newer methods produce accurate and robust estimates of total quantities, such as number, length, area and volume. Because of the enhanced power of the data obtained with these methods, they have recently made important contributions to our understanding of the changes in the structure of the brain related to aging and disease and are rapidly becoming the standards required by journals and granting agencies.
