In practice it requires the selection and genetic improvement of an organism for a specific purpose. Organisms may be used to synthesize a desirable product or degrade unwanted materials. The industrialization of this technology is dependent on the development of methods for scaling up processes developed in the laboratory.
Students interested in biotechnology could find careers in a wide variety of industrial applications. Examples of the types of industries that use biotechnology are antibiotic and pharmaceutical; food; energy; agricultural pesticides; herbicides; fertilizers; growth chemicals and breeding programs; industrial chemicals; biocatalysts; and diagnostics. The biotechnologist works with research scientists on the development of processes in the laboratory and with engineers to transfer and scale up laboratory processes for large scale production required by industry.

In California, the majority of biotech companies are in the pharmaceutical industry - producing medicines to help patients with AIDS, strokes, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. Techniques of biotechnology are also used in agriculture, industrial applications, forensics, mining, environmental cleanup and other industries. The San Francisco Bay Area has a heavy concentration of biotech companies.

Overview
Introduction Biotechnology is a perfect example of a "new economy" industry, a sector that did not exist as we know it a century ago but is a major economic driver for many national and regional economies today. Biotechnology involves the use of living organisms and biological processes to identify, analyze, and produce useful products. Traditional biotechnology includes selective breeding of plants and animals; modern biotechnology includes DNA testing medical devices, and pharmaceutical products, among others. The biotechnology industry can be divided into four main segments:
  • Discovery, which includes initial research to identify a genetic or chemical target, subsequent analysis to turn that target into a corresponding compound, and detailed screening and optimization processes; Product Development, which includes both pre-clinical trials and clinical studies (divided into Phase I, II and III) Manufacturing, which encompasses both production of drugs and placebos for clinical trials, as well as final manufacturing for market;

Over the next 25 years, the world will have to double its production of food to meet the requirements of a growing population. In order to meet this challenge whilst facing up to the demands of climate change, farmers will need access to a range of tools to maximise the output of our existing land whilst ensuring that the natural environment is protected, conserved and enhanced.
Agricultural biotechnology, which fuses together plant science and genetic technologies to produce genetically modified (GM) crops, will be an important way of ensuring that natural resources are used more efficiently. This is why abc believes you need to put science at the heart of agriculture and that farmers in the UK should have the choice to access this technology.

Biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life. The earliest biotechnologists were farmers who developed improved species of plants and animals by cross pollenization or cross breeding. In recent years, biotechnology has expanded in sophistication, scope, and applicability. The science of biotechnology can be broken down into subdisciplines called red, white, green, and blue. Red biotechnology involves medical processes such as getting organisms to produce new drugs, or using stem cells to regenerate damaged human tissues and perhaps re-grow entire organs. White (also called gray) biotechnology involves industrial processes such as the production of new chemicals or the development of new fuels for vehicles. Green biotechnology applies to agriculture and involves such processes as the development of pest-resistant grains or the accelerated evolution of disease-resistant animals. Blue biotechnology, rarely mentioned, encompasses processes in marine and aquatic environments, such as controlling the proliferation of noxious water-borne organisms. Biotechnology, like other advanced technologies, has the potential for misuse. Concern about this has led to efforts by some groups to enact legislation restricting or banning certain processes or programs, such as human cloning and embryonic stem-cell research. There is also concern that if biotechnological processes are used by groups with nefarious intent, the end result could be biological warfare.
