Botany
From LoveToKnow 1911
BOTANY (from Gr. Ooravn, plant; t30aKft y , to graze), the science which includes everything relating to the vegetable kingdom, whether in a living or in a fossil state. ,It embraces a consideration of the external forms of plants - of their anatomical structure, however minute - of the functions which they perform - of their arrangement and classification - of their distribution over the globe at the present and at former epochs - and of the uses to which they are subservient. It examines the plant in its earliest state of development, and follows it through all its stages of progress until it attains maturity. It takes a comprehensive view of all the plants which cover the earth, from the minutest organism, only visible by the aid of the microscope , to the most gigantic productions of the tropics. It marks the relations which subsist between all members of the plant world, including those between existing groups and those which are known only from their fossilized remains preserved in the rocks. We deal here with the history and evolution of the science.

Nov 1, 2010: Collinsia parviflora
By Daniel Mosquin email ) on November 1, 2010 12:59 PM 1 Comments I thought it might be suitable to lead with a flower and some colour this week, to offset the drab, grey weather. This photograph is from an early May trip to Vancouver Island with the Native Plant Society of British Columbia Unfortunately, my photograph doesn't show the character that helps to differentiate the two species of Collinsia native to British Columbia, Collinsia parviflora and Collinsia grandiflora , so I've made an educated guess. The corolla tube of Collinsia grandiflora has a near 90 degree bend from the calyx (see the base of the flowers in this photograph ), while in Collinsia parviflora , the angle is nearer 45 degrees (as displayed in this photograph ). Given that the angle of the corolla tube is hidden in my photograph with a face-on view of the flower, I suspect this individual has the 45 degrees angle hence the educated guess. Maiden blue-eyed mary or small-flowered blue-eyed mary has a range spanning much of western North America and parts of northeastern North America . In areas I've seen it (BC, Washington, Oregon, California), I've associated it with spring-time moist soils, growing in sunny to shady conditions. This small (3-40cm (1-16in.) annual species can be easily overlooked, as the flowers (though they appear large in the photograph) are typically 0.5-1cm long hence the specific epithet

  • Multiple keywords can be searched so that each word must appear in each hit (boolean "and") or so that only one of the words must appear (boolean "or").
  • To increase the chances of matching keywords with multiple endings, search for "Word Roots." With this setting, epiphyt will match both epiphyte and epiphytic.
  • You can also limit your search to just terms or just definition.
  • Additional Passes: If there are no hits in the first search, common word endings (-ing, -es, -ed, -ly) are stripped from the keywords and a second pass is made. If there is still no match, all non-word characters are stripped.

The objectives of the majors are: (1) to foster curiosity, understanding, and appreciation for living things and processes; (2) to prepare a student for further academic training in graduate programs; and/or (3) to prepare a person for employment in a professional area. Further, as a result of exposure to intensive academic study in these related areas, the student will be capable of communicating in and coping with a technologically sophisticated society. The biology, botany and zoology majors are sufficiently broad based to allow latitude for student choice in developing a program suitable to individual needs. Students desiring emphasis in a specific area of the Biological Sciences may select one of several Biology degree emphases. Favorable opportunities can be expected for biological scientists with advanced degrees and for bachelor’s candidates with outstanding educational and experiential backgrounds. The major factors that underlie growth in the biological sciences are: (1) continued need to increase biological productivity, (2) growth in genetic engineering, and (3) maintaining a biologically healthful environment. Those with only bachelor’s degrees will be affected the most in competing for jobs. It will become more difficult each year for someone with a bachelor’s degree to advance beyond “technician” positions. Expansion of research and development programs will create jobs for biological scientists in certain specialties. Rapid growth is expected in medical research programs and applications in genetic engineering and biotechnology. Biological scientists will be in demand to fill positions in expanding research programs concerned with causes and cures of cancer, heart disease, and birth defects. The biological processes underlying crop production, disease control, and maintenance of biological diversity will require increased research activities.

Annual Ethnobotany Lecture: Victoria Reyes-Garca - The dynamics of ethnobotanical knowledge in a globalizing world
Modernization and the acquisition of formal schooling are often considered a cause of loss of indigenous peoples ethnobotanical knowledge. Modernization -it is argued- makes available commercial products that substitute plant products that depend on ethnobotanical knowledge, and schooling opens pathways to the non-indigenous world. Data collected among a forager- horticulturalist Amazonian society, the Tsimane, as a part of a ten year-long panel study reveals a more complex pattern. Modernization can lead to both loss and retention of ethnobotanical knowledge, and schooling holds a potential remedy to ethnobotanical knowledge demise if educational curricula incorporate ethnobotanical knowledge.

Ethnobotany
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Ethnobotany from " ethnology " - study of culture and " botany " - study of plants ) is the scientific study of the relationships that exist between people and plants Ethnobotanists aim to document, describe and explain complex relationships between cultures and (uses of) plants: focusing, primarily, on how plants are used, managed and perceived across human societies (e.g. as foods; as medicines; in divination; in cosmetics; in dyeing; as textiles; in construction; as tools; as currency; as clothing; in literature; in rituals; and in social life.)

edit History of ethnobotany
Plants have been widely used by American Indian healers, such as this Ojibwa man. Though the term "ethnobotany" was not coined until 1895 by the US botanist John William Harshberger , the history of the field begins long before that. In AD 77, the Greek surgeon Dioscorides published " De Materia Medica ", which was a catalog of about 600 plants in the Mediterranean. It also included information on how the Greeks used the plants, especially for medicinal purposes. This illustrated herbal contained information on how and when each plant was gathered, whether or not it was poisonous, its actual use, and whether or not it was edible (it even provided recipes). Dioscorides stressed the economic potential of plants. For generations, scholars learned from this herbal, but did not actually venture into the field until after the Middle Ages.
