Ceramics and Coffee: The Italian Way!
by Myron Joshua Only after an Italian puts their hands on a craft could it gain world-wide fame and be considered an art. We coffee lovers might connect this statement to the art of coffee roasting and making espresso, but, quoted from virtualitalia.com , it refers to the ceramic style Majolica (maiolica) that flourished in Italy since the Renaissance. We will soon meet Fulvio Taccini, a Majolica artist from the Tuscan town of Vinci, who has created a set of Ceramic urns that expresses the deep connection he feels between his craft and coffee. But first a little background about Majolica.
    Majolica enters Europe through Italy
Majolica, like the "arts" of coffee, is not Italian in origin. Like coffee it was imported from the Eastern world to become highly developed by the Italians. Early examples of this type of ceramic are found in archeological sites of Mesopotamia dating from the ninth or tenth century. During the middle ages traders brought a later version of this pottery to Italy from the port city of Majorca. So, Italians began referring to this tin glazed earthenware as Majorca or Majolica. Tuscany was a center of this type of ceramics as the clay rich riverbeds of the Tiber and the Arno drew artisans to the region. When Moors were expelled from Spain, refugee potters set up small factories in Italy near these river banks.

    Introduction to Ceramics
Ceramics is one of the oldest forms of art in human history. The availabilty of material, its durability and versatility, functional objects, decorative pieces, and sculpture in nearly every culture around the world.
At present, one of the biggest challenges in creating new ceramic work is grappling with the common stigma that ceramics is only a utilitarian trade or artisan craft. Toshiko Takaezu speaks directly to this issue by making vessels that are closed and therefore not functional while other ceramicists employ the medium for sculptural and figural forms. At the other end of the spectrum, artistic movements of the 20th century have embraced the craft based origins of ceramic art and incorporated traditional techniques and aesthetics into the production of contemporary work.
Either way, ceramics presents a rich and accommodating medium for any contemporary artist working today. It offers myriad possibilities for form and object type and a wide array of options for technical processes. Depending on their choice of materials, building method, surface decoration, and firing, artists have nearly endless options to aid them in creating varied and lasting pieces of ceramic art.

    Ceramics
The art of ceramics is one of the oldest known, dating to prehistoric times. Clay is a special kind of earth, found all over the world that is easily worked when moist, but can be hardened and made waterproof by exposure to heat. The earliest forms of construction were pinched that is, the clay is formed with the fingers to the desired shape. Coiled forms were built up from long rolls of clay, and then smoothed with the fingers or a smooth piece of wood or stone. This link will show you how coiled construction is done
Slab construction involves rolling out a flat sheet of clay, cutting shapes from the sheet, and assembling them into the desired forms. All of these ancient methods are still practiced by craftspersons around the world. This link will show you how slab construction is done
Wheel throwing to make clay objects was developed in China at least as early as 3500 BC. This involves centering a ball of clay on a table that is turned by kicking a weighted wheel, or operating a treadle. The form is shaped by the potters hands, but is perfectly symmetrical, because of the turning of the wheel as he shapes the clay. The potters wheel and the wood lathe in fact operate on the same principal. Throwing is the method most commonly used today for handmade ceramics. This link shows the wheel throwing process
The earliest clay objects were earthenware that is, hardened in an open fire. This "low fire" method results in a porous, relatively soft material, which is not waterproof.
