WELCOME TO
Thanks for visiting! Right now, you're on CHEM4KIDS.COM . If you are looking for basic chemistry information, stay on this site. It's not just for kids, it's for everyone. We have information on matter atoms elements , the periodic table reactions , and biochemistry . If you're still not sure what to click, try our site map that lists all of the topics on the site. If you surf and get lost in all of the information, use the search function on the side of the pages.
OKAY! As we have for ten years, let's start here...
So you're asking, what is CHEMISTRY ? Well... Here's our best definition. Chemistry is the study of MATTER and the changes that take place with that matter.
Don't ask us why that matters. It just does. A lot. Everything on Earth, everything in our solar system, everything in our galaxy, and everything in the universe is made up of matter. Matter is the name that scientists have given to everything that you can touch, or see, or feel, or smell. Go take a look!

http://www.crystalinks.com/chemistry.html
Chemistry
Chemistry (from Egyptian keme (chem), meaning "earth") is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. It is a physical science for studies of various atoms, molecules, crystals and other aggregates of matter whether in isolation or combination, which incorporates the concepts of energy and entropy in relation to the spontaneity of chemical processes. Modern chemistry evolved out of alchemy following the chemical revolution (1773). Disciplines within chemistry are traditionally grouped by the type of matter being studied or the kind of study. These include inorganic chemistry, the study of inorganic matter; organic chemistry, the study of organic matter; biochemistry, the study of substances found in biological organisms; physical chemistry, the energy related studies of chemical systems at macro, molecular and submolecular scales; analytical chemistry, the analysis of material samples to gain an understanding of their chemical composition and structure. Many more specialized disciplines have emerged in recent years, e.g. neurochemistry the chemical study of the nervous system. Chemistry Wikipedia
Chemistry is the science that deals with the properties, composition, and structure of substances (defined as elements and compounds), the transformations that they undergo, and the energy that is released or absorbed during these processes. Every substance, whether naturally occurring or artificially produced, consists of one or more of the hundred-odd species of atoms that have been identified as elements.

1  Measuring and calculating equilibrium constants
Clearly, if the concentrations or pressures of all the components of a reaction are known, then the value of K can be found by simple substitution. Observing individual concentrations or partial pressures directly may be not always be practical, however. If one of the components is colored, the extent to which it absorbs light of an appropriate wavelength may serve as an index of its concentration. Pressure measurements are ordinarily able to measure only the total pressure of a gaseous mixture, so if two or more gaseous products are present in the equilibrium mixture, the partial pressure of one may need to be inferred from that of the other, taking into account the stoichiometry of the reaction.
Problem Example 1
In an experiment carried out by Taylor and Krist (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1941: 1377), hydrogen iodide was found to be 22.3% dissociated at 730.8°K.

  • Do EACH of the following activities:
    a. Describe three examples of safety equipment used in a chemistry laboratory and the reason each one is used. b. Describe what a material safety data sheet (MSDS) is and tell why it is used. c. Obtain an MSDS for both a paint and an insecticide. Compare and discuss the toxicity, disposal, and safe-handling sections for these two common household products. d. Discuss the safe storage of chemicals. How does the safe storage of chemicals apply to your home, your school, your community, and the environment?
Do EACH of the following activities:
    a. Predict what would happen if you placed an iron nail in a copper sulfate solution. Then, put an iron nail in a copper sulfate solution. Describe your observations and make a conclusion based on your observations. Compare your prediction and original conclusion with what actually happened. Write the formula for the reaction that you described.

    Chemdex status
The software used for the earlier version of Chemdex packed in totally after a server update and so the update planned for summer 2009, which is not finished, is here now. The bad news is most of the links are not yet in the system, but will appear slowly in the next few weeks. The good news is the links get checked automatically now and therefore the link fail rate of some 25% on the old system will be well under 5% or so and should stay at that level. Keeping web site links up to date is a problem for any directory site, as you may have spotted on this and other chemistry directories. Hopefully the new system (the wonderful open-source Drupal) will do a lot of the updating, so benefiting all of us. Searching for sites is improved vastly using the new "facetted search" system being built to the right. It allows you to refine searches based on key words in a comfortable sort of way. You can also search on words as well

    Development of the Detergent Industry
Although the start of the synthetic detergent industry is not shrouded in the veils of history as were the beginnings of the soap industry, it is nevertheless not easy to pinpoint exactly when the detergent industry, as such, came into being. The primary problem is to decide exactly what is being referred to as a synthetic detergent. The term itself leads to confusion. In the USA the words surfactant or syndet are being used, whilst in Europe the term 'tenside' (for tensio-active material) is coming into fashion.
    Definitions
Many definitions of synthetic detergent have been proposed, all of which are very wide. The Comiti International de Dirivis Tensio Actifs has after several years of deliberation agreed on the following definitions:
    • Detergent: Product the formulation of which is specially devised to promote the development of detergency. Note: A detergent is a formulation comprising essential constituents (surface active agents) and subsidiary constituents (builders, boosters, fillers and auxiliaries).
