How Has Child Psychology Advanced Over The Years?
With the enactment of PL 101-476, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1990, and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, child psychology has been forced to advance over the years. Psychologists play a major role in the identification of special needs children, in the creation of the Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), and in the implementation of the plans. Child psychology has also advanced in regards to treating students with special needs and working with their families. Districts are required to have a pre-referral team. If a student is suspected of having a disability, the pre-referral team does an informal evaluation. The team meets to discuss concerns, come up with strategies and devise a plan. The school psychologist is a member of the pre-referral team and typically heads up the informal evaluation. Based on whether or not the plan adequately addresses the needs of the child, a referral can then be made to the Committee on Special Education (CSE).

Katherine Fortier BA MASc
Home English-speaking psychological services for children and families in and around The Hague Every family experiences its ups and downs, good days and bad. Every child learns and grows at his or her own pace and develops a unique personality and set of skills and talents. Yet there are times when a child’s development or behaviour seems outside the usual range of expectations for that age-group, or when parents struggle to understand their child’s reactions or behaviour. Children and families in the international community may face additional challenges, coping with transitions and lacking some of the usual resources they may have had in their home countries, such as extended family supports. It may be your child’s teacher or a special needs co-ordinator at school who has suggested that you consult with a child or educational psychologist to help understand struggles or challenges your child seems to be experiencing in the classroom, either with learning or with behaviour. In my practice I see children aged 4 to 18 and offer a variety of services including psychological and psycho-educational assessments, consultations to parents and to schools, counselling and psychotherapy, and parent education and guidance. Some of the issues include school performance and achievement, learning difficulties, attention and concentration difficulties, coping with stress and with transitions, oppositional-defiant behaviour, social skills, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, grief, autistic spectrum disorders, divorce or separation.

Child psychology looks at the many influences on the mind and behavior of children. Lotus Head zSB(3,3) Child psychology is one of the many branches of psychology and one of the most frequently studied specialty areas. This particular branch focuses on the mind and behavior of children from prenatal development through adolescence. Child psychology deals not only with how children grow physically, but with their mental, emotional and social development as well. Historically, children were often viewed simply as smaller versions of adults. When Jean Piaget suggested that children actually think differently than adults, Albert Einstein proclaimed that the discovery was "so simple that only a genius could have thought of it."
