Child Psychology Diploma Programs
Child psychologists work in a variety of environments, including daycare centers, schools, development centers, clinics, and pediatric hospitals. Their duties include performing IQ and educational assessments, diagnosing and treating learning disabilities, and working with children and their families to manage behaviors.
Online Child Psychology Courses and Degrees
Psychology degree programs, from BA through PhD are available online. An online bachelor's degree in psychology can qualify you for a job as a psychologist assistant, or prepare you to continue in a graduate program. Some states allow school psychologists to practice with a master's degree, but have specific coursework and internship requirements. A doctoral degree, which can take up to seven years of graduate study, is required for most clinical or counseling psychologists, and an education specialist degree is a common requirement for most school psychologists.
Child Psychology Career Outlook
Annual median salaries for most clinical, counseling, and school psychologists ranged between $42,000 and $92,000 in 2004, according to the U. S. Department of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS predicts that employment for psychologists will grow faster than average through 2014, and anticipates competition for most graduate psychology programs to be intense. Opportunities in the field of child psychology are limited for degree-holders with only a bachelor's or master's degree. If you are patient, compassionate, and able to build effective rapports with children, a career in child psychology may be right for you.

What is Child Psychology?
According to professor of psychology H. Rudolph Schaffer who has written extensively on the subject, child psychology is the scientific study of children's behavior and development. Schaffer notes that a child psychologist attempts to describe and explain children's behavior and the way it changes over time and that the aim of child psychology is to assemble an objective knowledge base that can provide insight into both the nature of childhood generally as well as the distinctive charactersitics of individual children.
