    Feral Children
An article in Scientific American suggested that humans have been around in their present form for 120,000 years. However, we only discovered language and became technologically creative as late as 40,000 years ago. So what were humans like before that? And what would we be like if the influence of our current society was not present? Feral children are children who have spent much of their formative years in the wild, without any contact with other humans for a significant period of their lives. Cases of feral children are thankfully rare, but are of immense interest from a scientific and educational point of view. Feral children provide data which help to answer a number of questions:
    • How close is human nature to the nature of an animal? What aspects of human nature are genetic, and what aspects are learned?

A lesson about feral children written for children, including a list of films about real and fictional cases.
    http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/moviesfc.html
Neuroscience at the Movies Feral Children This lesson was developed by Ms. Heather Stewart, Neuroscience for Kids Consultant "...And when he came to the place where the wild things are they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws till Max said "BE STILL!" and tamed them with the magic trick of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all and made him king of all wild things."
    - Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are "Feral" means wild or existing in a natural state. Feral children are those who have been abandoned or lost in the wilderness and have spent a significant amount of their formative years there. These child have lived without any direct human contact and often with the aid of wild animals who have adopted them into their groups. Though there are many legends of feral children, only a few cases have been documented and verified (see links below). Over the centuries, stories of feral children have intrigued many people - especially scientists and educators - for possible clues as to the effect of socialization on language and communication skills, learned aspects of human behavior and development and the true nature of humans. Studies of feral children have led to new methods for teaching children with learning disabilities, and indirectly to the development of Braille and sign language. The films selected here all depict children who have been socially isolated from an early age. They make a fair attempt at the shock and revulsion with which these socially isolated individuals regard their "rescuers" and attempts to be incorporated into an unfamiliar culture. Where the fictional films (

The term "feral" means wild or undomesticated. Psychologists have studied feral childrenchildren reared in complete or nearly complete isolation from human contactto gain insights into aspects of human socialization and development. When feral children enter human society after their developmental years in isolation, they often continue to be seriously retarded. Researchers seek to answer the question of whether the abnormalities existed before their removal from society or developed because of their isolation. Interest in feral humans began as early as the 1700s and continues to modern times. When Swedish naturalist and physician Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) developed the system of scientific classification for plants and animals, he included the classification of loco ferus" feral" or "wolf" men, characterized as four-footed, nonspeaking, and hairy. The 1994 film Nell was based on the true story of a young woman introduced to society after living for years in near-isolation. Victor, the "wild boy of Aveyron," is the most famous case of a human being surviving in total isolation for an extended period of time. Discovered in 1799, Victor had been lost or abandoned in childhood, apparently surviving on his own in the wild up to the age of approximately 11. Philippe Pinel (1745-1826), pioneering French psychiatrist and director of the Bicêtre asylum in Paris, declared Victor an incurable idiot. But Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard (1775-1838), a physician and teacher of the deaf, undertook to educate Victor. Although he remained almost totally unable to speak, Victor showed great improvements in socialization and cognitive ability in the course of several years spent working with Itard. In 1807, Itard published Rapports sur le sauvage de l'Aveyron (Reports on the Wild Boy of Aveyron), a classic work on human educability, detailing his work with Victor between the years 1801-05.

FarShores News Posted Feb 22.02 Romania’s Wild Boy Reclaimed By His Mother A youngster found living like a wild animal in Romania has been reunited with his mother - but will have to learn to be a little boy again before being allowed to go back to her. Romanian authorities confirmed yesterday that the seven-year-old, nicknamed Mowgli after the boy raised by wolves in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, had been identified and his mother had been found. Lina Caldarar was reunited with her son, who she had named Traian, at the hospital in Brasov in Romania. She said he was lost more than three years ago and she wanted to care for him again. She said: "I loved my son but I had a violent partner, and he was always beating me. When I lost Traian I was distraught but there was nothing I could do. I hoped he had perhaps been adopted by another family ... but I had no idea he had been living wild." The boy was being kept under observation in hospital but doctors said they would place him in an orphanage. Police are trying to find the boy’s father and warn charges might be brought. Traian was only the size of a three-year-old, could not speak and was naked and living in a box. He suffers from severe rickets, has infected injuries and his circulation is poor, possibly because of frostbite.

From monkey boy to choir boy

John still seems able to communicate with monkeys
An orphan boy reared by apes in the African jungle has arrived in Britain to sing with a children's choir. John Ssabunnya, aged 14, was abandoned as a two-year-old in the dense jungle of Uganda to what seemed certain death. The BBC's Sue Nelson:"John was fed and sheltered by monkeys" But a colony of African Green monkeys came across him and adopted the real-life Tarzan as one of their own. He learnt their mannerisms, became adept at climbing trees and lived on a diet of fruit, nuts and berries for the next three years. Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan as Tarzan and Jane In 1991 a tribeswoman saw him scavenging for food with the chimps and reported it to the people in her village. The naked boy was caught and taken to the Kamuzinda Christian Orphanage, 100 miles from the Ugandan capital Kampala, where he lived with the family of the orphanage manager. For the last eight years, he has been taught to speak, has learned human ways - and as he began to utter his first words, it was discovered he had a fine singing voice.

    Teen found caged; parents held
By DANA TREEN and JOE BLACK
    The Times-Union,

The adoptive parents of a 49-pound Jacksonville teenager found diapered and forced to sleep in a locked, criblike cage were charged with felony child neglect Tuesday in a case that authorities called tragic and outrageous. Child welfare workers called to Wilson and Brenda Sullivan's home Jan. 10 found a malnourished 17-year-old boy wearing a diaper and appearing very developmentally delayed, according to a police report. Chief Steve Weintraub of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the parents told investigators that the boy was forced to sleep in a cage with a wooden lid kept shut with chains and a lock because he had behavioral problems and was overeating at night. The boy, whose name has not been released, and two younger children were taken from the Arlington home that day and placed in protective custody, but police did not arrest the Sullivans until Tuesday. The arrests were first reported by The Times-Union's news partner, First Coast News. "The children were safe, which gave us a chance to carefully review the evidence," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson.

Savage Girls And Wild Boys: A History Of Feral Children by Michael Newton
For centuries we have been haunted by tales, real and imagined, of children raised in the wild. Michael Newton on the roots of our fascination with untamed spirits In the years since the fall of communism, as the social fabric of Russia fell apart, street children became a common sight in Moscow and St Petersburg. Like the homeless in London, they were both ever present and subtly invisible - a backdrop to city life; an irritating intrusion on the process of simply getting on with things. But one of these Moscow street kids was different. He was actually to find the visibility that had so long been denied to him. In 1996, Ivan Mishukov left home. He was four years old. Ivan's mother could not cope with him or with her alcoholic boyfriend, so the little boy decided that life on the streets was better than the chaos of their apartment; and just as Moscow has its homeless, so it has its wild dogs, an inevitable consequence of the inability to create facilities for the city's many strays. Out on the streets, Ivan began to beg, but gave a portion of the food he cadged each time to one particular pack of dogs. The dogs grew to trust him; befriended him; and, finally, took him on as their pack leader.
