Civil engineering is one of the oldest disciplines in the engineering field. From the pyramids of Egypt to the exploration of space, civil engineers have been a key part of some of the largest and most exciting construction projects ever undertaken that have resulted in man-made wonders of the modern world. The Great Wall of China and the Chunnel are two examples of civil engineering masterpieces.
  • The 2,300 year-old Great Wall of China, stretches over 6,000 miles. Its main purpose was to guard against invaders from the north. The 31-mile long Chunnel, the longest undersea tunnel ever built, connects England and France.

As a Bates civil engineering student, you will use software programs that include Autodesk Civil 3D, CadreLite, Hydrocad, GIS programs, Word and Excel to prepare engineering plans, specifications and calculations. You will become proficient in coordinate systems, lengths, directions, slopes, bearings, areas, volumes, weights, densities, moments, forces, reactions, flows, and loads in preparation for your civil engineering technician career. The classroom closely resembles a civil engineering / surveying firm, giving you practice in many aspects of the profession — civil, structural, route surveying, defining project requirements, conducting survey/field work, field engineering, designing, construction staking, drafting, estimating, modeling, and client presentation of projects.
As a civil engineering technician graduate working with a project engineer, you might find yourself surveying a federal highway project in Yellowstone National Park; you could prepare critical plans, specifications and inspect improvements to I-5 with WSDOT; you might review construction plans and prepare bid estimates on a dam in California and write an environmental impact statement; or you could create digital terrain models for equipped construction grading equipment.

Born 3 December 1833 in Greenwich; son of contractor. Worked with other members of the Aird family and with the Lucas family. Began with pipelaying for the gas and water industries, and eventually became involved with railway contracts and with dock works. He became an MP and was involved in promoting public libraries and buying Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Sir John's baronetcy, awarded on 5 March 1901, was a public recognition of his considerable achievements. His organization was, after the death of Thomas Brassey, the largest contracting firm in Britain, employing 30,000 men in December 1874, and as many as 20,000 men on the Aswan Dam alone twenty years later. Aird retired to Wilton Park, Beaconsfield where he died on 6 January 1911.

What do the Great Wall of China, pyramids of Egypt, Roman aqueducts, Hoover Dam, Golden Gate Bridge, Sears Tower in Chicago and the network of U.S. interstate freeways all have in common? They are all engineering marvels, true testimonies to the genius of people, monuments of changing civilizations on our small planet. They are all civil engineering projects. Civil engineering is often called the "people-serving profession." Virtually all that surrounds us, buildings, highways, dams, harbors, airports, bridges and tunnels, pipelines and water systems are designed and constructed by civil and environmental engineers. It is hard to imagine the modern world today without complex systems that supply clean water to cities, remove sewage, control floods, transport people and goods, and reduce negative environmental impacts of pollution, noise, hazardous waste, etc. Great opportunities will exist in the transportation engineering area, where new technologies that use `smart highways' and `smart cars' will revolutionize our ways of combating the increasing traffic in our cities. New fast trains are being developed to offer an alternative to automobiles. Society is increasingly concerned about the negative environmental consequences of the rapid technological developments of our times. Good engineering should not harm the environment; it should respect it. In order to properly reflect these new concerns, the Department of Civil Engineering at San Diego State University has changed its name to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. New environmental engineering courses emphasizing sustainable design were developed throughout the curriculum and a separate degree in Environmental Engineering is now being offered by the CEE Department.

Patrick is an expert in the area of energy engineering where infra-red thermography is used to obtain thermal signatures for buildings so that their energy efficiency can be accessed. The exterior surfaces of well insulated buildings should be at low temperatures to minimise heat loss to the environment. Areas with inadequate insulation will show up as hot spots, highlighting energy loss avenues that are invisible to the naked eye.

Year 2 Civil Engineering @ University of Limerick (CIVIL @ UL) students recently debated a number of controversial current engineering topics as part of their Design Studio module. A total of six motions were thoroughly researched and formally debated by the students in teams of 6 (3 for and 3 against each motion).
The topics included motions such as:
'The new Limerick tunnel should have been a bridge', 'The Spirit of Ireland is an idea whose time has come', 'Our heritage at Tara is more important than a new motorway', and 'All of mankind must radically alter its behaviour to avoid a climate change catastrophe'.
