Sacramento, CA 94236 Climate change is having a profound impact on California water resources, as evidenced by changes in snowpack, sea level, and river flows . These changes are expected to continue in the future and more of our precipitation will likely fall as rain instead of snow. This potential change in weather patterns will exacerbate flood risks and add additional challenges for water supply reliability.

Cloud over CO2 storage in trees
Two separate studies have thrown doubt over forests’ ability to help offset global warming. Because trees rely on carbon dioxide to grow, it has been predicted that as CO2 levels rise in a warming world, trees would thrive on the increase, grow faster, and thus help soak up excess atmospheric carbon. As a result of their findings, the authors of both studies have called into question the growth models for worldwide vegetation being used in official climate change forecasting for this century. The results of the ... + READ MORE prev next
    Wood or climate change forestry
Much is said about how forestry will be an important part of Indonesia’s emission reduction plan. Many in the conservation community believe that the best way to reduce net emissions is to reduce the area of forest harvested for wood products or land cleared for conversion to agriculture or other land uses. On the surface, this sounds like a great idea, but what about the demand? How can we conserve while at the same time meeting the demand for wood and wood products? Indonesia produces about 35 million cubic meters of legal round wood every year, but consumes substantially more than that — perhaps as much as 50 million cubic meters per year. This leaves a large gap between legal wood supply and demand for wood and wood products — a gap that is equivalent to over 170,000 hectares of selective forest harvest every year. As human population grows and per capita ...

California produces roughly 1.4 percent of the world's, and 6.2 percent of the total U.S., greenhouse gases. Our state has been working on and finding solutions to our impact on climate since 1988. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's 2005 executive order on climate change kicked into high gear to further advance clean renewable energy and other solutions to lower our state's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. And the landmark California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 established the first-in-the-world comprehensive program of regulatory and market mechanisms to achieve real, quantifiable, cost-effective reductions of GHG.

A view from the sky of melting permafrost on the Arctic tundra. Climate change is a topic of worldwide concern, but it’s of particular concern at the poles. That’s because the impacts of global warming are felt first and most severely at higher latitudes. Given this, it’s not surprising that the poles are also where much of the research concerning global climate change is taking place—or that climate change was the central focus of the 2007–2008 International Polar Year
Melting iceberg, Antarctica. The Arctic has experienced warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world. Winter temperatures have increased by up to 8° F (4° C). Snow and sea ice coverage have shrunk by 10 percent and 20 percent respectively in the last 30 years. The summer of 2007 saw an unprecedented mass-melting of one million additional square miles of sea ice, an area larger than Texas and Alaska combined.

Basic Information
Climate Change or Global Warming? The term climate change is often used interchangeably with the term global warming, but according to the National Academy of Sciences, "the phrase 'climate change' is growing in preferred use to 'global warming' because it helps convey that there are [other] changes in addition to rising temperatures." Climate change refers to any significant change in measures of climate (such as temperature, precipitation, or wind) lasting for an extended period (decades or longer). Climate change may result from:
  • natural factors, such as changes in the sun's intensity or slow changes in the Earth's orbit around the sun; natural processes within the climate system (e.g. changes in ocean circulation); human activities that change the atmosphere's composition (e.g. through burning fossil fuels) and the land surface (e.g. deforestation, reforestation, urbanization, desertification, etc.)
Global warming is an average increase in the temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth's surface and in the troposphere , which can contribute to changes in global climate patterns. Global warming can occur from a variety of causes, both natural and human induced. In common usage, "global warming" often refers to the warming that can occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities.

Shifting Tides: Indigenous Responses to Global Climate Change was conceived to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on Indigenous communities in Canada and in the South Pacific. Indigenous communities are particularly vulnerable to the social and economic impacts of climate change due to the nature of their subsistence-based economies and colonial histories. The Shifting Tides Delegation in front of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, Ottawa, Canada. From left to right Stephanie Peter (and Olivia), Mona Belleau, The Honourable Jean Crowder MP, Shaunna Morgan, Te Pa Mataiopo (Imogen Ingram) Apai Mataiopo (Tekeu Framheim), Dr. Larry Grant. Shifting Tides provides a forum for Indigenous peoples to share their stories and call fellow Canadians to take action on climate change. In November 2007, an international delegation of Canadian Aboriginal and Cook Islands Maori Elders, Youth, and Scientists took part in a month-long tour that involved visits to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and various cities in Canada, including Victoria, The Cowichan Valley, and Vancouver, BC; Winnipeg, MB; Ottawa, ON; and Iqaluit, NUN. During the tour, the delegation had opportunities to meet with several Indigenous communities. From these dialogues arose the clear recommendation that Canadians need to take decisive action on climate change now. This web-based climate action kit provides tools and resources for the average-Canadian to start making changes now.

Climate change and human health
Climate change is a significant and emerging threat to public health, and changes the way we must look at protecting vulnerable populations. WHO has an active and long-standing programme on protecting health from climate change, guided by a World Health Assembly resolution. Through its country, regional and headquarters offices, WHO provides evidence and supports capacity building and implementation projects to strengthen the health system response to climate change, and to ensure that health is appropriately considered in decisions made by other sectors, such as energy and transport. The Organization also provides the health-sector voice within the overall UN response to this global challenge. What WHO is doing
