A well-managed Anaerobic Digestion system will aim to maximise methane production, but not release any gases to the atmosphere, thereby reducing overall emissions.
Anaerobic Digestion also provides a source of energy with no net increase in atmospheric carbon which contributes to climate change.
Energy generated through the AD process can help reduce the demand for fossil fuels.
Anaerobic Digestion creates an integrated management system which reduces the likelihood of soil and water pollution occurring, compared to disposal of untreated animal manure / slurries.
A financial advantage of Anaerobic Digestion is the conversion of residues into potentially saleable products: biogas, soil conditioner, liquid fertiliser.

Mission Statement
Climate Change Australia is devoted to the discussion and analysis of issues surrounding climate change. Topics discussed in the blog include the science involved in global warming, international agreements to reduce emissions, the economic rationale for various reduction mechanisms and perhaps most importantly, what you can do in your everyday life to make a difference. Run by a young economist with a special interest in sustainability and the environment, this site aims to help readers make decisions now which will have a positive effect on the health of the planet in the future.

Emissions Trading: The Pros and Cons
April 8, 2008 The externality associated with the non-rival and non-excludable costs of the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is inherently difficult to internalise. Emissions trading has emerged as a popular method of achieving socially optimal emissions reduction. The following analysis discusses the flaws in emissions trading – particularly in light of its use in the European Union – and puts forward suggestions regarding policy initiatives that may help overcome these problems.

Climate Change; a summary of some present knowledge and theories
(by Evert Wesker)
Introduction
In the last decades some notable weather events have occurred. A small but impressive sample of weather incidents:
  • In the storm which struck England on 15-16 October 1987 a gust of 220 km/h was measured.
  • On 15 December 1986 and 10 January 1993 all time pressure lows on the North Atlantic of
916 (912?) mbar were recorded in the vicinity of Iceland.
  • The summers of 1994 and 1995 broke quite some heat records. A striking example among them:
  • The damage caused by the hurricane "Andrew" in 1992 was $30 billion. It was a category IV
    hurricane
on the Saffir Simpson scale at the moment of landfall.
  • The Typhoon Faxai in December 2001, at the very end of the tropical storm season in the
West Pacific, had at its moment of maximum intensity sustained winds along its eye wall of

1st November 2010 Thermogeddon: When the Earth gets too hot for humans (registration required)
IT IS the late 23rd century. Houston, Tel Aviv, Shanghai and many other once-bustling cities are ghost towns. No one lives in Louisiana or Florida anymore, and vast swathes of Africa, China, Brazil, India and Australia are no-go zones, too. That's because in all of these places it gets hot and humid enough to kill anyone who cannot find an air-conditioned shelter. This is the nightmare scenario outlined in a study published earlier this year. If we carry on as we are, it claimed, in as little as a century a few small areas might start to get so hot in summer that no one could survive without air conditioning. 1st November 2010 Q: What percentage of global warming is due to human causes vs. natural causes? - A: Probably almost all of it
There still seems to some confusion on this basic question. A year ago, NASA scientist Gavin Schmidt was asked on RealClimate: "What percentage of global warming is due to human causes vs. natural causes?" His answer is straightforward: Over the last 40 or so years, natural drivers would have caused cooling, and so the warming there has been ... is caused by a combination of human drivers and some degree of internal variability. I would judge the maximum amplitude of the internal variability to be roughly 0.1 deg C over that time period, and so given the warming of ~0.5 deg C, I'd say somewhere between 80 to 120% of the warming.

EU Representative Warns of Climate Change
European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard warned of the impending effects of climate change and lauded the benefits of clean energy at a panel on the European perspective on international climate policy yesterday.
"The past few months have brought tragic and shocking reminders of the messy human, economic, and environmental costs the world faces from climate change," said Hedergaard, the Danish government official responsible for the Copenhagen Climate Summit.
Despite these sobering predictions, Hedergaard said the economic changes needed to combat climate change could prove beneficial for countries willing to invest in clean energy.
She also cited a study conducted by University of California, Berkeley Professor Daniel M. Kammen that found that every dollar invested in renewable sources of energy generates three to five times more jobs than a dollar invested in fossil fuel energies.
In light of these potential incentives for investing in clean energies, Hedergaard expressed frustration with the U.S.' inability to pass legislation on the matter.
Stavins said that the biggest hurdle currently preventing the passage of climate change legislation is a lack of political agreement.

A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE
by
Douglas Hoyt ( bio and references Email: dhoytwv@gmail.com
On these web pages we take a critical look at climate change and particularly climate change over the last 25 years where data is good. Some of the material comes from an old website at erols.com that now no longer exists. Much of material will be new based on new developments in the last few years.
The material is organized into several categories, with introductory statements on this page and more detail discussion in the links. The material will be updated form time to time.
PROBLEMS WITH THE GREENHOUSE WARMING THEORY
There are several problems with the theoretical underpinnings of the standard IPCC theory of global warming due to anthropogenic greenhouse gases (AGHG). These problems are listed here with more discussion in the links.
1. The IPCC theory has a roughly 3.5 W/m decrease in outgoing thermal radiation from a doubling of carbon dioxide. The number is based upon an instantaneous doubling of carbon dioxide and assumes no change in the continuum radiation. This topic is discussed further here
2. The sensitivity of climate without any feedbacks is (33 C / 148 W/m

The debate is over: global warming is real and the scientific consensus identifies human-caused greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, as the primary cause. HTML Version » Climate change is a global problem that requires real solutions. That's why the Government of Canada supports an aggressive approach to achieve real environmental and economic benefits for all Canadians. The causes of climate change and its impacts on the environment and human health are now more understood. Canada is a vast country with a diverse climate, which makes the impacts of climate change all the more important.  The Government of Canada supports efforts to protect the environment by developing policies and programs, conducting scientific research, and working with other government departments, the provinces, territories and international partners in the fight against climate change.
